RATING
This is like a soap opera set in outer space. A group of around 200 people living together on a refitted asteroid heading towards the next nearest star system, dealing with internal and external conflicts. Very well written. The plot is based on real, hard science, and does a good job of imagining what space travel might really look like in the future.
This is like a re-imagining (or pastiche or parody) of the heady days of 90’s best-selling thriller authors like John Grisham, Michael Crichton or Dan Brown (or the fictional Luke Pattersby), where these authors are depicted as rockstars or messiahs, and their fans as cult members calling themselves “the children of the thrill” and getting high on coffee. There’s a lot of narration here, but the actors all amazing, and the monologues are very well written. Intelligent, literal, weird and surreal, this is a fascinating piece of audio drama. It reminds me of “Fight Club” in terms of irony and surrealness, so if you like that sort of thing (which I absolutely do) then you’ll probably like this.
The production was slick, with great acting and good sound design, and the stories were tautly written and genuinely thrilling, although they were quite short. 5 fifteen-minute episodes a piece. Although I’m normally of the opinion that the story should dictate the length, and you shouldn’t try to make it longer by inserting unnecessary twists, red-herrings and subplots, in this case I wouldn’t have minded.
