Selling Out

My dad is pretty cool. He likes to show me art-rock and tell me about sold-out concerts, he pierced his own ear as a teenager, grew his hair out so long that cosmetology students practiced braiding and styling it, served in the Navy, has been on all seven continents, worked as a chef in a successful restaurant chain, and has seen the vast majority of this country he loves. Also, he is the husband of a beautiful lady, the father of three brilliant young women, and a high school coach and teacher of over twenty years.

I wonder if my dad from thirty years ago would approve of my dad today. I had never thought about it until I talked to Dave about his podcast Selling Out. See, Dave and his co-host Nate have reached somewhere around forty years of life and somewhere along the way something changed.

I was looking back on my life and I thought to myself, you know, ‘what would my eighteen-year-old self think of myself now? How would I view how I’ve turned out?’ And I thought, man, my younger Dave would think, you’re such a sellout, dude.

Present-day Dave is a stay-at-home dad and has mellowed considerably from his days as a punk rocker. He knows that his younger self would be wondering what happened to all of his angst, and he wanted to answer that question himself.

So I got my buddy Nate who I’ve been friends with since high school who’s also kind of in a similar boat where he’s getting up there in years like me and we’re looking back on our lives and wondering what did we do? What did we achieve? And we decided to base a show around that.

Selling Out records the lessons the duo has learned over the years and the theories they’ve come up with along the way. From friendship and pets to prison and mental health, Dave and Nate run the gamut of topics and always tie them to their personal experiences.

In many ways, it’s free therapy for me. There’s a lot of times where maybe you can’t talk to your spouse or certain friends or your coworkers about things that affect you or things you think about in life. But the moment you have that mic in front of you, you can let loose.

The chance to continue to let loose is what Dave and Nate are excited to get to keep doing. They have recently signed on to work with Infirmary Media, a network hosting several shows the two admire, but they are looking forward most of all to covering more topics.

I think more than anything, [I’m excited] to explore more topics that some shows don’t want to touch on, because me and Nate are brutally honest and discuss things like addiction and things we’ve gone through in our lives… Our thing is, we want to be as honest with the listeners as humanly possible.

How? “By being raw and sharing our lives in full detail.” Dave and Nate don’t plan on holding anything back and are excited to see who joins them for the ride.

If you’re looking for an honest discussion about some real-life issues from people who have lived real life, Selling Out is the show for you.
