VOLKSWAGEN’S DIESELGATE SOFTWARE FIX HAS ANOTHER CHEAT DEVICE: GERMAN COURT

We'll start with an email from listener Chris Hopkins: "You will probably see this since I know you review Teslarati, but just in case not, here you go. Summary:  Software fix has another cheat in it based on temp."

 

"In a recent decision, a district court in Düsseldorf, Germany has declared that Volkswagen’s software fix for vehicles affected by its Dieselgate emissions cheating scandal that broke in 2015 actually contained another cheating device." writes Simon: "According to the findings of the Düsseldorf district court, Volkswagen’s Dieselgate software fix was intended to ensure that the emissions of vehicles affected by the scandal were appropriately controlled. Unfortunately, it turned out that the exhaust gas cleaning system in the update only worked at outside temperatures between 10-32 degrees Celsius. In the event that the weather falls below or above this range, the cleaning remains disabled, allowing the affected vehicles to overly-pollute as before. As noted in a WallStreet-Online.de report, the repercussions of the Düsseldorf court’s decision will likely be explosive."

 

From the original source: "In the case (Az. 7O 166/18) was about a VW Tiguan diesel with the scandal engine EA 189th This vehicle was the Volkswagen offered software update, which removes the unauthorized shutdown device according to the company. TESLA IS QUICKEST GROWING BRAND IN GERMANY: OUTSOLD JAGUAR

"So far this year, Tesla sales (actually new car registrations) amounted in Germany to 6,816, which makes Tesla the quickest growing brand in the country. The growth rate of over 405% is just out of reach for the established manufacturers." says INsideEVs: "The reason behind such a great result is, of course, the Tesla Model 3, which noted 5,804 new registrations compared to zero last year. The Model S/X registrations were 1,010, which is 25% less than the 1,346 a year ago at this point."

RUMOR: SIXTH PRODUCTION-BOUND VW ID ELECTRIC CAR

"The Volkswagen Group plans to build 27 different electric-vehicle models, across its brands, by 2022—on its way to building 10 million EVs on its upcoming MEB architecture by later in the decade. That requires quite the ramp-up of company resources, and it’s likely the brand has many more new ideas and designs to test as concept cars." according to Green Car Reports: "So far the ID, ID Crozz, ID Buzz, ID Vizzion, and ID Roomzz concepts are all either confirmed or strongly hinted at as being production-bound. Of those, the ID, to be called ID 3 in production, is the only one open to reservations thus far, and it won’t be sold in the U.S. "

TESLA IS UPDATING ITS WIRING SYSTEM FOR REDUNDANCY IN SELF-DRIVING

"Tesla has been working on updating its wiring system with a new ‘high speed’ architecture that includes more redundancy, which the automaker believes is going to be useful with the advent of self-driving." writes Electrek: "The project has been revealed in a new patent application that Tesla made earlier this year and was released by the patent office last week. It’s called ‘High-Speed Wiring System Architecture’ and it describes a wiring system with a loop to create redundancy in case of failure."

FIRST REGISTRATIONS OF TESLA MODEL 3 SR+ SPOTTED IN NORWAY

"After several months since Tesla started volume deliveries of the Model 3 in Norway, registration stats reveals the first examples of the cheaper Standard Range Plus version." spots InsideEVs: "The Teslastats.no shows - as of August 17 - 26 SR+ registrations, while the core was so far the Long Range type (9,762 AWD, 1,050 AWD Performance and 124 RWD). According to various sources and comments, the Standard Range Plus version arrived also in other markets in Europe."

JUMP ABOARD THE EDUMPER, THE WORLD'S LARGEST ELECTRIC VEHICLE

"110 tons heavy when fully loaded and powered by a 4.5-ton all-electric battery, this dump truck prototype is the largest electric vehicle (EV) in the world.

Produced by Kuhn Schweiz AG, the truck is operating in a mountainside quarry in Biel, Switzerland, and is capable of delivering 60 tons of lime and marl." according to CNN : "Through a process called regenerative braking, the eDumper's electric motor goes into reverse when the driver hits the brake pads, releasing electricity that can be stored and returned to the battery. And the heavier the load, the stronger the braking and the more electricity can be recovered."

ELECTRIFY AMERICA UNVEILS HUMOROUS BRAND-NEUTRAL MARKETING CAMPAIGN TO HELP NORMALIZE EV OWNERSHIP

Electrify America today launched its newest brand-neutral marketing campaign titled “Normal Now.”

 

The multifaceted digital campaign will kick off nationwide with a new informational website – NormalNow.com – as well as online videos, streaming TV ads, digital banner ads, social media ads, paid search, and streaming audio and podcast.

The “Normal Now” campaign aims to introduce and normalize zero-emission vehicles for the vast majority of Americans who are not aware of or have never considered switching to a zero-emission vehicle. Through comical :15 videos, GIFs and still images, the “Normal Now” campaign draws comparisons between “new technology” of the past – including cell phones, smart watches and online dating – and what is assuredly the transportation method of the future. The campaign explores how scary previous forms of “new technology” were at first and reinforces that – just like EVs – while it may have seemed weird at first, it’s normal now.

MERCEDES INTRODUCES A AND B CLASS PLUG-IN HYBRIDS

"Mercedes-Benz is now also bringing its third-generation plug-in hybrid drives into the A and B Classes. The A 250 e and A 250 e Saloon can now be ordered, and sales of the B 250 e will start in a few weeks." writes electrive: "The new PHEV models will be launched this year. At 15.6 kWh, the high-voltage accumulator in the plug-ins is larger than in most comparable vehicles. This should allow between 56 and 69 WLTP kilometres of purely electric driving."

NEW FIAT 500 ELECTRIC TO BE FOLLOWED BY SEVERAL PLUG-IN FIATS

"Fiat is reportedly gearing up for a broader electrification initiative with several electric/plug-in models in Europe. The Italian's firm approach is combining small cars with an electric drive option." according to InsideEVs: "The starting point will be the new Fiat 500 Electric (not to be confused with the Fiat 500e sold in U.S.), scheduled for market launch in Q2 2020. According to Autocar, the renewal plan includes a total of five electric/plug-in hybrid Fiat models. We must remember that Fiat's main Mirafiori plant in Turin, Italy will be able to produce up to 80,000 electric cars "initially", which itself suggesst that there will be several models."
