Before we had Superman, Wonder Woman, Captain Marvel, the Flash or even the Avengers America had a real-life superhero that rescued hundreds of people from death and slavery and inspired countless others to do their part. Harriet Tubman is an American icon that is talked about in every history book in this country. Until now, her life story had not been captured for the big screen. Acclaimed director, and this week’s guest, Kasi Lemmons decided to tackle this weighty responsibility and bring one of the patron saints of African-American history and culture to the silver screen. Not only was the movie great, it even garnered a Best Actress nomination for Cynthia Erivo, the actress that portrayed Harriet. This week’s episode is a bit different in set-up. I will explain at the beginning. We do get to chop it up with Kasi and get into some of her motivation and inspiration for bringing such a pivotal story to the screen.
