Wary of the term "jazz" as a Eurocentric/White Supremacist flattening of the complex & interwoven styles of Afro-American music, Lateef preferred to call the music he made "autophysiopsychic music" - which he defined as "Music which comes from one's physical, mental and spiritual self… to others."
