Hello and welcome to Shades and Layers
0:04
. I'm your host , guduan Oskosana Ritchie
0:06
, and today we have a story
0:09
about finding and pursuing new
0:11
dreams , paying it forward and
0:13
, most importantly , online fitness
0:16
coaching . My guest is Stephanie
0:18
Julia Moton , known among
0:20
her clients as the fitness challenge
0:23
lady . She is the founder of
0:25
the hybrid one-to-one and group
0:27
fitness coaching brand , catching
0:29
flights and fitness , as well
0:31
as a business coaching company for online
0:34
fitness coaches , profitable
0:36
passion and purpose P3
0:38
. Stephanie was working
0:40
in federal law enforcement when
0:43
she founded catching flights and fitness
0:45
for her community of 1,500
0:47
other frequent travelers . Her
0:49
business became profitable very quickly
0:52
and soon she moved on to
0:54
coaching other fitness and wellness entrepreneurs
0:56
on how to do the same . Everything
0:59
was fun and exciting , with a high-paying job
1:01
, a side hustle and a busy
1:04
travel schedule . And then the
1:06
pandemic hit and , like many
1:08
of us , stephanie realized
1:10
that , while she loved her work in federal
1:12
law enforcement , she was burnt out , and
1:15
when things started slowly getting
1:17
back to normal , she leaned more and
1:19
more into what she had started with P3
1:22
and , in January 2023
1:24
, she became a full-time entrepreneur
1:27
. In this conversation , you
1:29
will hear how Stephanie Moton transformed
1:31
her career and transitioned into
1:33
her new journey , as well as how everything
1:35
from the past connects , to create
1:38
this new path for her .
1:40
I am a business coach for fitness
1:42
coaches who want to
1:44
create , launch and scale
1:47
their online fitness coaching business Wonderful
1:50
.
1:50
So if , in a nutshell , you could
1:52
describe that kind
1:54
of work and the deeper meaning
1:56
you attach to it , Excellent .
1:58
I actually love that question . Just
2:00
let me know the
2:03
deeper meaning . Every time you say it , I'm like
2:05
I keep thinking of a
2:07
phrase that one
2:10
of my life coaches said to me years
2:12
ago and I have been saying it more
2:14
and more nowadays because
2:16
it's not only a reminder for myself but for
2:19
my clients is that
2:21
you weren't given this purpose
2:23
unless it was meant to take care of you , and
2:25
I feel like it's my duty
2:28
, it's my mission , to
2:30
show people how to
2:32
monetize their passions
2:34
, move in their purpose in
2:37
a way that it's going to take
2:39
care of not just your
2:42
day to day expenses
2:44
and bills , but your wildest dreams
2:46
. So that's okay
2:49
. So another phrase just came to me as soon as
2:52
I said that was like I want to teach
2:54
folks who look
2:56
like me , move like me how to print
2:58
their own money .
2:59
Excellent . I love that , I
3:02
love that and I like that you mentioned
3:05
life coaches that you have . So
3:08
coaching is clearly something you're
3:10
passionate about . Can you tell me how it
3:12
came about in your life ? How did you enter
3:14
this coaching world ? Oh , it's that
3:16
same life coach .
3:17
I have to shout her out
3:19
now . They've got to say I've now mentioned her
3:22
twice in this podcast . Her name's Catherine Searcy
3:25
and now she actually is . She's
3:27
known as the retreat maven , but back
3:29
when I was working with her
3:32
, she was getting really into life
3:34
coaching . At the time I didn't
3:36
know what life coaching was or anything
3:38
like that . I thought I was hiring a
3:40
virtual therapist .
3:42
honestly , Like I was , just like I need somebody
3:44
to talk to , right .
3:46
And on the first session
3:48
she encouraged me to
3:50
create what is now known
3:53
as catch flights and fitness , my online
3:56
fitness coaching program . I
4:00
knew it was a passion of mine to
4:02
coach
4:05
others towards their fitness goals , but
4:08
I didn't have a typical
4:10
nine to five . I didn't
4:13
have a consistent schedule . I
4:15
was a special agent for Homeland Security Investigations
4:18
so I couldn't
4:21
be trusted with the gym session and
4:23
like you don't want me to
4:27
, you don't want to count on me at that
4:29
time to be anywhere for
4:31
one hour , like it , right , right
4:33
. So I knew like I had
4:36
to figure out how to monetize the online space
4:38
and I had no clue . And
4:40
she was very intuitive with me
4:42
and kind of just encouraged
4:45
me to explore and
4:47
figure out how I could do it . And
4:50
that's really like was the push
4:52
, because whenever I got stuck I
4:55
would reach out , you know , get educated
4:57
, go to YouTube University or
4:59
hire a business coach .
5:03
Okay , I love that . So
5:06
have you always been into health
5:08
and fitness , or it's just something
5:10
you needed because of your inconsistent
5:12
schedule ?
5:15
So I've always been
5:17
into sports . So I was an athlete
5:21
all the way to elementary school . I
5:23
don't think I've ever mentioned this to anyone
5:26
, but my sister almost
5:29
went into the Olympics for
5:31
track and field .
5:32
What and so ?
5:33
I'm , yeah , like cool and
5:35
my , my , I have
5:37
. Yeah , one of them was like
5:40
right on the cusp of going to the
5:42
Olympics . The other sister is a
5:44
big athlete herself . We were , we
5:46
went to brunch and they had a basketball court
5:48
and we couldn't pull her away from the basketball
5:51
court . This last Sunday
5:53
, so , like I've always
5:56
been , my brother won
5:58
state championships for football in
6:01
high school . So I've always been surrounded
6:05
by athletes
6:07
my mom , everybody
6:09
. So it was just a natural
6:12
path because so
6:14
I went to college , I was an athlete in college
6:16
, at the University of Miami , and then when I
6:18
graduated , I had no coach
6:21
. So that's where I
6:23
gained a ton of weight in
6:26
my job , not really having
6:28
that consistent schedule like you mentioned
6:30
. And I
6:32
didn't . I realized
6:34
, I won't say early , I
6:37
realized that
6:39
it was because I was so
6:41
used to having , you know
6:43
, ingrained accountability inside my
6:45
, inside , my lifestyle , you know
6:47
always having a track and field coach
6:49
or a basketball coach . You know practice
6:52
schedule and they were fun for
6:54
me . So I created
6:56
that same community again
6:59
and literally , like
7:01
, over the years , it became
7:03
a business .
7:05
So I kind of totally fell into
7:08
it . Yeah , yeah , wonderful
7:10
. So when did you realize that you actually
7:13
have a business ? Who was paying you
7:15
and how much and how often
7:17
?
7:19
Oh man , when I realized so
7:22
. So during
7:24
that time , when I realized I needed like
7:27
an accountability , like squad
7:29
I needed , there was no partner
7:32
and so I
7:34
had saw a number on a scale that I thought I
7:36
would never see and
7:39
it wasn't . There was
7:41
a bit of shame and embarrassment , but
7:43
immediate action . I didn't sit
7:46
still Like I saw it and I moved
7:48
and I started to create
7:50
challenges because I loved competition
7:52
I'm big on competition so
7:55
I created challenges for my coworkers
7:57
, my family , friends
7:59
, and they weren't big challenges
8:01
, they were like maybe $25 , $200
8:04
. And well , somewhere
8:06
, somewhere like three weeks to like six
8:09
months , and I was
8:11
doing that for years and got addicted
8:13
to it . But even
8:15
my job it made me very well
8:17
, so I could throw money
8:19
at it , buy prizes
8:21
for them , all that kind of stuff . And
8:24
I was giving away thousands of dollars
8:26
from just like the pot , the
8:28
cash prize pot , and
8:30
when I think , the third
8:33
or fourth . But the only way that I could get
8:35
paid during this time was
8:37
if I won a challenge , and I will
8:39
tell you , very rarely I
8:42
won a challenge and
8:45
so years would buy actually
8:47
before I realized , oh
8:50
, I'm give , there's money
8:52
moving , a lot of money
8:54
moving , just not too much , but in
8:56
this . it's not
8:58
buying , it's not staying with me and
9:01
I started charging like admin fees
9:03
, like $50 for a challenge . And
9:06
I was like this is something no one's
9:08
even paying attention to , like admin
9:11
fees , all the mind trash and charging , thinking
9:14
, you know , while I was charging it was free
9:16
before or whatever , or
9:19
not free . But like they didn't know , I wasn't
9:21
taking any part of that
9:23
. I asked my sister
9:25
this is what really happened
9:27
. I asked my sister , who now is
9:29
a full-time business owner , has a thriving
9:32
business herself , went full-time
9:35
after working full-time for
9:37
someone else and at
9:39
the time she had just transitioned
9:42
to being a full-time entrepreneur and
9:44
I was like , oh , this is what I got
9:46
going on . How do I monetize this ? Like
9:48
, how do I make money off of this ? I really
9:50
love what I'm doing . How
9:53
do I make this into a business ? And that
9:55
girl said just do it . And
9:57
I was like okay
10:00
, Okay , okay , okay , all
10:04
right . But really I
10:06
got help . It took me a long time
10:08
but I got help . I hired a business coach
10:10
that helped me
10:12
create and launch Catch
10:15
fights , and fitness is what I ended up creating
10:18
and really like the
10:21
. It feels like forever ago , but
10:23
it's like the rest is histories
10:25
, you know , like sucking
10:27
in as much information
10:30
as I could and implementing
10:32
and integrating what made sense
10:34
.
10:35
Right , but this is what . You didn't immediately
10:37
go fully into the business , right . You still
10:39
carried on with your nine to five . When
10:42
did you take the leap
10:44
into full-time entrepreneurship
10:47
and actually maybe take
10:49
me through the process of preparing for that
10:51
transition into full-time entrepreneurship
10:53
?
10:54
Oh , I was like okay , All right
10:57
. Okay , I hope you're gonna
10:59
need to take a breath there , so
11:02
I said no it's okay , because
11:05
it was a three-year
11:07
journey and it wasn't like
11:10
I honestly feel , like a lot
11:12
of people think oh , I
11:14
just you know , I was making all of this
11:16
money and I left and I
11:18
hit the goals . I said well
11:20
when , I make this , I'm gonna
11:22
transition out . I've even
11:24
quit and then a year and a half later
11:27
, I actually walked away . So I'm gonna
11:29
say , oh sorry . Oh for
11:32
sure and for real , but it
11:34
started in COVID . So
11:36
before COVID hit , you
11:39
asked me this was a retirement
11:41
plan . Like it wasn't . I was
11:43
just going to , you know , build
11:46
the brand , really learn
11:49
and set myself up so that I didn't
11:51
have to work in retirement
11:53
. I could do what I loved . But
11:56
what I realized
11:58
but shortly thereafter
12:01
realized how long retirement
12:03
was , from that moment I had
12:06
at that time I
12:08
had about 14 or 15
12:10
years left and
12:12
I was just like , yeah
12:15
, exactly , that's exactly so
12:18
. Covid , what the pandemic did for
12:20
me was we weren't working
12:22
. I was on detail in DC
12:24
and I literally
12:27
everything shut down because what I did
12:29
you had to be in the office for there was
12:31
not like you had to be there because
12:34
I worked in a very secure area
12:36
and they didn't let us in the office
12:38
. So I was hiking during the day
12:41
, I was answering some phone calls
12:43
from when , like , the field would call me , but when
12:45
I say I wasn't really doing much , I got
12:48
to like breathe and
12:50
what happened was when
12:52
I had to come back into
12:54
the day to day of working being
12:56
a special agent all that I
12:58
realized how burnout I was before
13:02
the pandemic hit . So I was go
13:04
, go go all
13:06
day , all night answering phone calls
13:09
from the prosecutor , writing after date
13:11
. Doing all this stuff like nonstop
13:13
for 10 years . And
13:16
then when the pandemic hit , it was like all
13:19
I had to do was just take care of
13:21
myself . Yeah , I was like I could breathe . This
13:23
is amazing , but I didn't realize it
13:25
inside of me . I'm back and
13:28
it's still didn't realize it . Everything
13:30
was very triggering . I was just not
13:32
like I was not doing
13:34
well , like
13:38
everything bothered me . But at
13:41
the same time , now I have my business
13:43
. It's moving , it's grooving , it's doing
13:45
what it's supposed to be doing and I was like
13:47
you know what ? I just leave . And
13:50
I remember telling my supervisor I think I'm done and
13:54
no one leaves this job .
13:57
No one needs this job . Wow , ok
14:00
, no , no , wow .
14:02
No one needs you Finished
14:04
. And my supervisor was a
14:06
black guy and I know he is
14:08
an integral part of this whole
14:10
story and he was only my supervisor for like
14:12
a blimp but like
14:14
a few months . But he
14:18
, he was like stuff , like don't , don't
14:21
do that , like what do we need to do ? And
14:23
they actually moved me long
14:25
, long story short , that was a
14:28
year and a half after I actually
14:30
left and
14:33
it was I took like I really didn't believe
14:36
when I say that was my dream career
14:38
. It was my dream career since middle school
14:41
, really , and I left because
14:43
I left honestly , because
14:45
I could no longer be of service
14:48
in the way that I wanted
14:50
to be Right this day
14:52
, so I left
14:54
. It had it , wasn't it
14:56
honestly ? Like ? My reasoning for leaving
14:58
my career wasn't the business , but
15:01
it was like the pull of the business
15:03
. So this is what now . This is what I warned my clients
15:05
about you . This
15:07
will happen to you when you start
15:10
walking in your purpose . Because
15:12
, when I tell you that was my dream career
15:14
, there was nothing wrong until
15:16
I started moving inside
15:19
of my , my real purpose , my , my
15:21
real passion , because I loved what I did
15:23
. But I started to move
15:25
in that and literally the
15:28
shedding was happening like we're
15:30
moving this out of the way
15:32
. So I'm thankful
15:34
for being able to transition out
15:36
in the way that I did , but
15:39
it wasn't . It was more of a
15:41
like what's
15:43
going on ? Like why am , why can't
15:45
I do this work ? Type of
15:47
like I didn't understand . But
15:49
it was more of like shedding . And
15:51
now , in regards to like finance
15:54
is something that I , what
15:57
I love to , what I want to do
15:59
for my clients is to show them how
16:01
to set them up , set themselves up
16:03
for success while they're
16:05
still working the job , because I could
16:08
have stayed , it wasn't , it
16:10
wasn't the time , like a business
16:12
, you know , with that time . But
16:14
I just you know , I
16:17
didn't want to be a
16:20
public servant , who I
16:22
?
16:22
didn't want to resent my job . You're right , and
16:24
that was coming . Yeah , and
16:27
you can see when people resent their jobs
16:29
right here .
16:30
Yeah , I saw that that job . They
16:32
definitely was a lot of resentment
16:35
once you get closer to retirement
16:37
. Yeah , yeah , that person .
16:41
This is Shades and Layers . My guest today
16:44
is Stephanie Julia Moton , aka
16:46
the fitness challenge lady . Her
16:48
companies catching flights and fitness
16:51
as well as profitable passion
16:53
and purpose p3 have
16:55
changed the lives of many frequent travelers
16:57
and aspiring online fitness
16:59
and wellness entrepreneurs . Up
17:01
next , she talks about the role of mindset
17:04
and self care on your entrepreneurial
17:06
journey , and we also hear
17:08
how she's using these and other tools
17:10
for her current transition from
17:12
solopreneur to organizational leader
17:15
. So how do you advise
17:17
your clients to navigate full-time
17:20
work with a side hustle
17:22
?
17:22
Well , it's , it's tough
17:24
. It's tough for everybody
17:27
. I don't believe in the
17:29
oh , just do
17:31
XYZ , and it's going to be simple and
17:33
fast . The fastest way is
17:35
by getting a blueprint . So now
17:37
they're . If they're my client , they have a blueprint
17:40
. All they . They know exactly what to
17:42
do , step by step , and all you
17:44
got to do is work on the mind trash along
17:46
the way . You don't have to like
17:49
right , because
17:52
that's the hard , that's
17:55
the hard part . I could give you the relief
17:57
what to do today , tomorrow , all
17:59
the way through , whatever your goal is
18:01
. However , you
18:04
, you , you need support from my
18:06
trash and this is okay . So this is
18:08
just came . This is
18:10
all my spirit to say . So I'm gonna say it is
18:13
when we don't
18:15
, when we get like free resources
18:17
, when we're out there , like we're looking at
18:19
the YouTube Versa university , which was so
18:21
me back in the day , if you
18:23
go and all you university like
18:25
what are you doing to
18:28
take care of yourself when
18:30
that my trash comes up , like who
18:33
, what support system do you have in place
18:35
? When the hard things happen
18:37
and that's something that
18:39
, like I Tried
18:41
to encourage my clients is is it's
18:44
gonna happen like it's gonna be tough , it's
18:46
you're literally working two jobs
18:48
. The side hustles , if you really
18:50
love it is very rarely
18:52
Side hustle energy
18:55
and time , right , like you could
18:57
go and work at a bank
18:59
as a side income or
19:01
something like that . Or
19:03
like work security is like side
19:06
income , but your business
19:08
isn't going to be that . Like you
19:10
know , it's not a mind-numbing work , right
19:13
? So you're , you're putting like
19:15
a lot of you inside of this
19:17
quote-unquote side hustle . So
19:20
just know that , as long as
19:22
you have a blueprint and you follow
19:24
it and you have a support system
19:26
With you to help
19:28
with any tweaks because your time
19:30
is limited or with focus
19:32
, you know , focused action steps
19:34
when your time is limited . You're
19:37
golden and you just got to sit back and trust
19:39
the process . Now , for those who don't
19:41
have that , I'm gonna encourage
19:43
you to go get that , but if you don't have
19:46
that , you can still yourself . You
19:48
just got to be aware that your
19:51
what's your Blueprint
19:53
looks like isn't going to look
19:55
like the full-time entrepreneur , all
19:58
right . Like you , you can't
20:00
move in the same way , and
20:03
don't expect yourself to . Don't don't
20:05
beat yourself Up for not having the
20:07
same success , because
20:09
even if you throw in family too on top
20:11
of that , like it's just , we got to be realistic
20:14
about , all right , you know the
20:16
growth of our businesses .
20:18
Yeah , and what ? What are some of the
20:20
lessons you learned while you were combining
20:23
your Fitness
20:25
business together with your full-time
20:27
job ?
20:28
I had a very Powerful
20:30
, in my opinion , morning routine that
20:33
started around
20:36
the pandemic right like I did
20:38
a lot of self-care work at
20:40
that time and
20:42
I honestly believe
20:44
that business growth is like
20:46
a roller coaster , like those dips
20:48
when
20:51
years and doubts start coming up , I'm
20:54
sure be my continued growth and my continued
20:56
success and my Continue like
20:58
continued action and not just giving up
21:00
and throwing it out to my morning
21:02
routine . So every morning
21:05
I wrote down Granted
21:07
, while this is a bother over time , so I'll give
21:09
you the evolution version morning
21:12
Writing
21:14
, a couple things of gratitude . What
21:16
am I really like ? Jotting down some
21:18
wins Like what am I proud of myself for
21:20
? For accomplishing , either
21:23
that day or over the past week , goals
21:26
like my goal for the day
21:28
. And then I had
21:31
a manifestation strategy
21:33
from man project
21:35
365 where
21:37
I would have write it right down my Affirmation
21:41
, my goal affirmation . So let's say it's a
21:43
how it is . This is one of my um
21:45
, one of my it's not a new one , it's
21:47
a very old one , but it's one that's I'm
21:49
starting to speak more out loud and
21:51
it's three goal
21:54
affirmations , six goal
21:56
affirmations in the afternoon and then
21:58
nine in the evening . And let's
22:00
say your goal is I am a residual
22:03
million dollar income earner . You
22:05
write that three times in the beginning of
22:07
the day , three times in the afternoon
22:09
and then three times in the evening , and
22:11
that could be your morning routine at least
22:14
the front part of it and then writing down
22:16
some action steps up , you get there and then
22:18
practicing visualization . It can be so powerful
22:20
. Yeah , I really do attribute my
22:22
morning routine to the
22:25
strength of my mindset as
22:27
I was going through the realizing
22:30
the burnout , addressing
22:33
the burnout and modifying
22:36
my time to Make
22:38
sure that I was still like , enjoying
22:41
life . Because I do travel a lot . Over
22:44
the past six years I've traveled every
22:46
single month , every single month
22:48
, except for one month I missed one and I'm a little
22:51
bit heard about that , but Every
22:53
single month I Don't
22:56
have a lot of time , you know . But
22:58
as a fit online coaching
23:01
, an online coach it
23:04
makes it a little bit easier . I have more
23:06
of a flexible schedule , but you
23:08
still had to get on sales calls , right , like
23:10
I'm working for a time where the calls
23:13
going . So I just made
23:15
sure to affect my schedule and prioritize
23:18
the growth of my business and I
23:20
brought my self-care to the beginning
23:23
of the day .
23:24
So it didn't it ?
23:25
there was no Skipping out because
23:28
I had a sales call in the afternoon or I
23:30
wanted to go out with my friends in the evening . Me
23:33
, my mind and
23:35
my your
23:37
self-care was always at the start of the day
23:39
, and still to this day it is . I don't know
23:41
how anybody does anything
23:44
different Successfully would
23:46
you say you're a digital nomad ? In that case
23:48
, I
23:51
Probably could use that
23:53
title with how much I move around
23:55
, I did
23:57
have a Digital nomad
24:00
.
24:02
Okay , I was in .
24:04
Puerto Rico and saloon and the
24:06
saloon well both was just
24:08
a magical experience . I can't
24:10
wait to go back to the room . I
24:12
haven't been back since then , but I
24:15
was beautiful . I love the
24:18
concept .
24:18
I don't think I've ever done it intentionally
24:21
right , it's just the way things I just
24:23
move around .
24:24
Yeah , and I will say something , and I say
24:26
a lot is like I always want to have a home base
24:28
, because that was that was actually
24:30
how I ended up , or ended that trip
24:32
early because I didn't have a
24:34
home base . I was in between apartments so I was
24:36
like I'm not before I get you know , sign
24:39
another lease , I'm gonna go travel a bit
24:41
, but it
24:43
messed with me a little bit to not feel
24:45
like I had a home base .
24:47
Right , right
24:51
, right , okay , great . So
24:53
now , how are you structured ? You know
24:55
, are you still a solo printer
24:57
or do you have a team that you use
25:00
for , you know , managing
25:02
all these various tasks that
25:04
it takes to run a business .
25:06
So I'm in transition mode to
25:08
from one to the other , because
25:12
I do believe it is impossible
25:14
, and I'm sure maybe there's some people that have successfully
25:17
done it , but I want to stand on this and
25:19
say so
25:22
where I want to grow by
25:24
myself , right , I
25:26
Right now have a team
25:28
of contractors , um
25:31
, but that helped me with
25:33
the parts of my business that
25:35
I don't really care for or are just
25:37
Super time-consuming for
25:39
me , and I do love , you know
25:41
, when you're first starting out
25:43
getting getting that team
25:45
so that you can
25:47
serve your clients , which is what
25:49
we got into this business for anyway
25:51
. Right , but
25:53
now I want to build a
25:56
company where there's a there's
25:59
there's a leadership team and
26:02
I'm helping to really like move
26:04
things along . That's a . That's the transition
26:06
that I'm moving in . So , right , I
26:09
don't know about it , I was air . Maybe I already
26:11
have my first employee , but that's that's
26:14
what I'm working on . Next , it's
26:16
starting to hire team
26:18
teammates really , and
26:21
growing this business or at one of the .
26:23
Yeah , and you
26:25
know your ideal leadership team
26:28
. What kind of Values
26:30
with their body . You know what . What would they
26:32
be like ? What are you dreaming of ?
26:34
This is good . I almost feel like this is a coaching
26:36
session now . Because , I do skip
26:39
this one . You
26:42
let's
26:44
see if I can remember all five . It's
26:48
really like passion and
26:50
excitement . Luxury
26:52
is one of my top
26:55
values . I know it's funny
26:57
, it feels a little special
26:59
, but like moving fast
27:01
, I like to grow fast
27:04
. Mindset work
27:07
, really understanding , like in
27:09
order to be successful at anything , you
27:12
gotta take care of the emotional body
27:14
. I
27:16
think that's . I know there's a fifth one in
27:18
my camera , number one in it . No
27:22
, no problem .
27:23
I'm sorry , I'm gonna
27:25
have . No , no problem , it's just , you know , I'm just always
27:27
interested in , you know the kind of companies
27:29
that people want to build and you know
27:31
what they would
27:33
look like , because I mean
27:36
, it's inspiring for other people
27:38
to hear these stories , right ?
27:40
So that's why I'm saying this . That's a question . Yeah
27:43
, yeah , a lot of the values
27:45
. That a lot of the values
27:48
have to do with not
27:50
just the success that I had
27:52
, like what pushed me
27:54
along , but also
27:56
, you know , the parts
27:59
that almost took me out . And
28:01
what can I do to show
28:04
others how to mitigate
28:06
those situations ?
28:08
Right .
28:09
Because they had , like , I've been a victim of
28:11
life-lifing for a few
28:14
times , but now , after
28:16
going through those experiences , I'm like , okay
28:18
, I understand why I had
28:21
to go through that , so that I can set
28:24
this up for next time
28:26
, as well as teach
28:29
others how to set it up
28:31
in their businesses .
28:33
Right , right , perfect
28:35
. So let's talk about the fitness
28:37
industry in general , and
28:39
particularly the online fitness space . Now
28:41
there is a representation
28:44
problem and
28:46
it's quite but
28:49
you know , things have changed , so so
28:53
, if you can talk me through . Like you know , what
28:56
are you observing in terms
28:58
of on the representation front
29:01
? You know , is there more
29:03
variety ? What are you seeing ? Or
29:05
you know it's just too slow to even notice
29:07
anything .
29:11
So there's a statistic
29:13
that shocked me when I heard it , and
29:16
I'll share why . So
29:19
there's only 10%
29:21
of the health and wellness industry
29:23
are comprised of black women
29:25
. The leaders inside
29:28
that , Wow yeah , that's pretty interesting and
29:30
I was like , really , and
29:32
I'm not gonna lie , it's
29:35
what you see
29:37
, is what you curate . So , like
29:39
my Instagram , my Facebook
29:41
is curated to be black
29:44
, af . Okay , but
29:46
it's just , it's what I love to see
29:48
. I love to see us winning , I love to see us supporting
29:50
each other . I wanna support them . So
29:54
it is . You
29:56
know , I didn't I think I walked
29:58
in an assumption that we were , you know , we were
30:00
in there doing our thing , but
30:03
we're not doing it on the level that
30:06
that is
30:08
at the same level as our education and experience
30:11
, and there's so much we
30:13
said there . There is , you know
30:15
, and I keep calling it , mind trash , but
30:17
there's like systemic mind
30:19
trash that
30:24
we have to overcome . That
30:26
other people get to
30:28
, you know , like they were just raised to
30:30
believe in themselves that way , believe
30:32
in their values . So
30:35
, yeah , there's more than just representation
30:38
, like seeing our faces , but also
30:40
seeing our faces and winning
30:42
, you know , achieving
30:44
new levels of success , however the way you define
30:47
it . You know everybody defines success
30:49
differently but like achieving
30:51
that success and show it
30:54
off . You know , I still
30:56
get people in my DMs that are like
30:58
I didn't even I
31:00
didn't , like I really just wanted
31:02
to meet you . Because I didn't ? I don't see
31:05
black women business coaches
31:07
and I'm like , really Cause I'm
31:09
surrounded by them , right , right
31:12
right . I can't
31:14
wait to be like that , but
31:16
it's really powerful to make
31:19
sure that we are we're
31:21
being of service in that way too , by just
31:23
showing up for others who
31:25
don't have the same
31:27
experiences .
31:28
That we did , sure , sure , you
31:30
know , I thought just occurred to me . I mean , it obviously
31:33
has to do with who owns media , right , because
31:35
there's a little bit of a contradiction
31:38
, because you can't have someone like Shakari
31:40
Richardson coming out and winning Olympics
31:42
if there is no fitness
31:45
in the black community or
31:47
other communities of color . Right , I mean
31:50
there's like there's a mismatch
31:52
there's . Yeah , I don't know
31:54
what your thoughts on that are , but
31:57
to me , I think there's a mismatch to what
31:59
you see on an elite level compared
32:01
to what you see in the mainstream .
32:04
That is so deep I
32:06
got chills . I've
32:08
never thought about it that way , honestly
32:10
, but I used to say this
32:12
too in different like Facebook
32:15
groups where they were
32:17
shocked at how much online
32:19
fitness coaches make , and it's
32:21
really us that are shocked
32:24
by the numbers . But
32:26
I was taught by I'll
32:29
just be blunt and straight with you , chia . I
32:32
was taught by . A white
32:35
woman taught me how
32:37
to create my online fitness coaching
32:39
program my attributes so far
32:41
, but she taught me
32:43
how to create it and launch
32:46
it , and she
32:48
also told me
32:50
how much fitness
32:52
online fitness coaches were making since
32:54
2019 . They were creating
32:57
packages for $1,500
32:59
for 12 weeks .
33:01
Oh my God , Come
33:03
on . What am I doing with my life
33:05
? One
33:10
more time .
33:11
But I was just like what
33:14
it like ? Blown away . And now when I saw
33:16
, and this was 2019 . So
33:18
I'm like we're at 2023
33:21
. And I don't know what the industry
33:23
standard is now . I honestly
33:25
think , now that I've cracked my mind
33:27
, I've seen different things . It's so
33:30
vast , like I know a fitness
33:32
coach who charges $6,000
33:34
for their program . I also know a fitness
33:36
coach that charges $750
33:39
for a fitness coaching program . But like
33:41
we are now breaking
33:43
into this industry , that
33:46
was like was almost
33:48
like , I feel like was walled off to us
33:50
Because you don't know what you don't know
33:53
. And honestly , I'm like nah , sis
33:55
, you paid how
33:58
much for your education . You
34:00
spent how many hours in the gym
34:02
training people . You
34:05
also went through hail
34:08
and back in your own fitness
34:10
journey to achieve the success for yourself
34:13
which , in my opinion , is way harder
34:15
than teaching someone , right
34:19
, right , like it's much
34:21
harder to live in it in yourself . I
34:23
could go on this topic for so long
34:25
, but it's frustrating because
34:27
even when I'm working with
34:29
my clients again that mind-touch
34:32
of asking for the sale
34:34
, pitching , saying your value
34:36
, and then I always tell them
34:38
you got to be able to say your price
34:40
on the call . So
34:42
don't be charging $6,000
34:45
. If you can't even say 2,000 out
34:47
loud , let's baby step our
34:49
way there . But we're getting there
34:51
100% . I get to be
34:53
front and center and watch
34:56
this grow
34:58
in this industry and it's so
35:00
powerful Even for those who look
35:03
like me , not even just being
35:05
a black woman , but
35:07
I've been on my fitness journey for some time
35:09
, and even as fitness coaches
35:12
. When you gain weight , we're
35:14
building a business . You
35:17
start to lose that six pack and
35:20
it's like , oh , I can't post until my
35:22
six pack comes back and I'm like , oh , this
35:24
is what's dope about the online space
35:26
. We get to be vulnerable , we get to be real
35:29
, we get to be intentional and we get
35:31
to tell our story and connect
35:33
with our audiences . Wall around
35:35
powerful and needed .
35:39
Hey there . Before we continue with the episode
35:41
, I have a favor to ask Please
35:43
give Shades and Layers a rating and
35:45
review on your favorite podcast
35:48
listening app , so that others can find
35:50
us and we can continue to
35:52
bring you this wonderful work . Five
35:54
stars would be excellent , thank
35:56
you , and now back to the episode
35:59
. This is Shades and Layers . My
36:01
guest today is Stephanie Julia Moton
36:03
, a business coach for online fitness
36:06
entrepreneurs and founder of
36:08
Catching Flights and Fitness , as well
36:10
as P3 . As always , this
36:12
is the part where we go into
36:14
our guest's backstory and
36:16
we also do a quick round of Shades
36:18
and Layers rapid fire . So here
36:20
we go . Let's talk
36:23
about you , and you
36:25
already mentioned that you know being
36:27
working for Homeland
36:30
Security was
36:32
one of your career dreams since
36:34
high school . So back
36:36
then , what were the other things
36:39
that you were dreaming about ? You
36:41
know the very influential moments
36:43
in your life that still
36:45
stand out to this day and have
36:47
kind of informed how you turned out and carry
36:50
yourself in the world .
36:51
So the
36:54
moment that it's not
36:56
even a moment . It's a serious statement . It's
36:58
one statement that I said to myself
37:01
over and over again , and I'm
37:03
not I actually don't remember
37:05
where it came from , but
37:09
so my real last , my last name
37:11
on social media is Julia
37:13
, which is actually my middle name . It's
37:16
not like I'm trying to hide my last name . Well , when I was
37:18
working for Homeland Security Investigations I
37:20
was , but now everybody
37:23
knows me as Stephanie Julia
37:25
, so that's it . But my real
37:27
last name is Moton , and
37:30
I used to say growing
37:32
up I'm a Moton
37:34
, everything I touch turns the gold . And
37:36
I was so serious about it . Like
37:40
imagine this Everything
37:42
I touch turns the gold . I'm a Moton .
37:45
And I was just like , like nail , nail play
37:47
.
37:49
I need that energy . Come back
37:51
, little stuff .
37:51
Right , right .
37:55
So it's . It's translated into
37:57
the confidence that I need
37:59
in order to be of service
38:02
in the way that I want to be of service
38:04
Because , like
38:06
, as I'm growing my business , as I'm
38:08
expanding and stretching , I
38:10
go through the same things that my clients
38:12
go through . I have the same mind trash . I'm
38:15
just that you know I might be at a different level
38:17
, but the practices that
38:19
I've , that I've made
38:21
now need to be strengthened
38:23
as I grow up . We're
38:25
just learning layers . That
38:28
was my very first layer and
38:31
it was a very powerful one , and
38:34
it's something that I remind myself
38:36
of a lot more lately these
38:39
days .
38:39
Perfect . And then , if you had to
38:41
sum up your life in a written memoir
38:44
, what would it be called and why ?
38:46
So I didn't think about the whole life
38:49
, but always a
38:51
VIP . Oh yeah , that's
38:53
live . Yes , that is
38:55
. That is that's the title that I'm living
38:58
right now . And
39:00
if I was to , you know
39:02
, even bring it back to like past experiences
39:05
, it would just be
39:07
a reminder
39:09
like , hey , you know you're always a VIP
39:11
, right . And then I'll be like you're right
39:13
, but
39:17
now , more like in 2023
39:19
, I'm going to step into that vibe left
39:21
and right , and it's
39:24
, it's a , it's a powerful vibe to walk
39:26
in .
39:26
That's all I think , yeah , yeah . And
39:29
if you had to turn that memoir into a
39:31
movie , who would you pick for the lead
39:33
actress ? Jill Scott ? Yeah
39:36
, of course . Oh
39:40
, that's my , I see it . Yes , everything
39:46
, yes , the curls , yeah , yeah
39:49
, yes , yes , yes , my
39:51
girl , oh yeah , excellent
39:53
, excellent . And
39:55
if you had to invite one
39:58
famous black woman , living or dead
40:00
, to dinner tonight
40:02
, who would it be ?
40:04
So I bounce
40:06
back on two people , but they both
40:09
mean the same to me . So
40:11
, uh , madam CJ Walker
40:14
, the first woman
40:17
to become a millionaire who just
40:19
happens to also be a black woman as well
40:21
Um , and
40:23
then the person who made
40:25
me really understand
40:28
what she did for
40:30
us and what , like , I almost feel
40:32
like I was introduced to studying
40:35
her . Um , she's , uh
40:37
, her name's Rachel Rogers , and
40:39
she wrote the book we should all be
40:41
millionaires . So I
40:44
know he said one person , but I'm like
40:46
if I could put them into
40:48
one spirit yeah , that's
40:52
who I was I'd be like can I just
40:54
have all y'all here ? Thank
40:56
you , excellent .
40:57
Yeah , oh , wonderful . Yeah
41:00
, I like this , I like this
41:02
. So when
41:04
? If people want to be your client
41:06
, where can they find you ?
41:10
Um , um , they can always find it . Like I always
41:12
say , my DMs are always open on

41:48
