Relatively basic in design, this standardized four-people-at-a-table studio talkshow format can still be a tool of depth and enlightenment. Perhaps not the most intellectually challenging of podcasts, but the very long, free speaking interviews in which their guests are permitted to speak at length of their views and experiences contribute to this enlightenment. Very good sound quality.
Small Town Dicks stands out from other true crime podcast because it really stays away from sensationalizing tragedy and is a great platform for talking about the types of crimes. The most interesting episodes were in season 1 about the corrupt officer (The Sociopath and the Whistleblower), which is the only time I've heard the hosts be critical of other officers and acknowledge their inherent bias. But it's increasingly grating every time I hear the officers refer to people as "unredeemable" and their bias against "frequent fliers." They also talk about polygraphs as if they were accurate. I listen to it because it's important to engage with media you don't agree on and the content is interesting. Ultimately, it's an incredibly pro-police, pro-long sentences and clear look into police bias (how they talk about "frequent fliers" vs "nice families".
This is a really good true crime police procedural. The detectives are straight-up and no nonsense, yet with a sense of humor. The cases are interesting and handled with sensitivity for the victims and their families without being maudlin. But. . . the voices of the hosts are HORRIBLE. What is the deal with women in their 30s, 40s, and even older sounding like little girls??? Ugh. It's really bad. They better hope the detectives continue to carry the show or i will stop listening.
