In this episode, Jan and RJ interview an ordinary guy from Wisconsin... Or so it seems... Since 2000, Tim Friede, a truck mechanic from Wisconsin, has endured some 200 snakebites and 700 injections of lethal snake venom—all part of a masochistic quest to immunize his body and offer his blood to scientists seeking a universal antivenom. For nearly two decades, few took him seriously. Then a gifted young immunologist (Dr. Jacob Glanville) stumbled upon Friede on YouTube—and became convinced that he was the key to conquering snakebites forever. - Learn more about The Human Antivenom Project HERE: https://www.outsideonline.com/2395803/snakebite-antivenom-tim-friede - If you want to support us, there are three ways to do so. What's up Apex Chasers! Today we're trying something new and giving you access to a live stream that Jan did the other day with 1st Lt Ryan Stitt, host of The History of Ancient Greece. Jan talks to Ryan about all of the ins and outs when it comes to starting a podcast, the sheer amount of research that goes into each of his episodes, and how long he foresees the show continuing. "If you start a podcast to make money, you won't be successful. You have to be passionate about it. There's no way that you can stay motivated to produce a quality show if you're not passionate about it" Here's a little about Ryan! Hello, I’m Ryan Stitt and I am the researcher/writer/producer of the History of Ancient Greece, a podcast series covering Ancient Greek political, social, and cultural history from prehistory to the Roman conquest (possibly even further if the interest is there). Out of all of the many great civilizations in the ancient world, what was it that made the Greeks so special? And why are we millennia later so radically linked to them? Well, those are some of the very important questions we will examine during the extent of this podcast. In the western world, we can’t possibly understand our society if we don’t understand its Greek origins and how it developed, as there’s a great deal of continuity from ancient Greece to the modern world. Greece was the cornerstone of western civilization. But the question is how did this come about?   - If you want to support us, there are three ways to do so. In this episode, Jan and RJ interview Dr. Jean-Philippe Burckert. JP received his Master’s in Chemistry with a specialization in Life Sciences from the University of Kaiserslautern in 2012 and completed his Ph.D. studies at the Luxembourg Institute of Health (LIH) in Bioinformatics and Computational Immunology. His Ph.D. work was presented at over 20 international conferences. After academia, JP joined the Bioinformatics consulting firm BISC Global as Senior Bioinformatics Consultant, where he helped to establish the new department in Boston, MA. Leveraging his rare skillset in deciphering immune repertoires, JP worked with over a dozen small and large pharma and biotech companies in the Cambridge and SF Bay area providing the specialized bioinformatics capacity for their immune-oncology, autoimmune disease, antibody discovery and vaccine design groups. JP is now the head of the computational and informatics efforts at Centivax and leads an amazing team of scientists and informaticists. In a statement on his episode:  “Jake set me up for success by putting together an amazing group of young scientists: Timothy “Tim” Young, our software engineer, Rachel Hovde our statistics and machine learning genius, Aishani Aatresh, a 17-year-old computational immunology magician and Michali Izhaky a biologist who wants to move into bioinformatics - and has done so successfully and in rapid time. So I tend to point them in the right direction and let them loose. They never cease to amaze me.” - Check out Distributed Bio Here: https://www.distributedbio.com/ Look at the NEWEST initiative (Including COVID-19 Research) HERE:  https://www.centivax.com  - If you want to support us, there are three ways to do so. In this episode, Jan and RJ interview Shahrad Daraeikia. Shahrad spends some time talking about his journey to becoming a scientist at the forefront of innovation in the biotech industry. This journey involved changing majors from Pre-Med to Pre-Pharmacy followed by the decision to go to graduate school for something completely different, on the other side of the country. - Instead, Shahrad opted to attend graduate school at the University of San Francisco in pursuit of a Masters in Science in Biotechnology. Shahrad then encountered Jake Glanville (CEO of Distributed Bio), became an intern at the company, and has since grown into a position that required him to directly impact the revolutionary techniques being utilized to discover and engineer powerful antibodies in the fight against a global pandemic.  - Check out Distributed Bio Here: https://www.distributedbio.com/ Look at the NEWEST initiative (Including COVID-19 Research) HERE:  https://www.centivax.com  - If you want to support us, there are three ways to do so. A lover of learning and collaborating, particularly in any scientific or interdisciplinary context beyond the classroom. A strong leader and communicator in a variety of domains. Experienced and interested in the biotech/synthetic biology fields. Moonlighting as an aspiring Renaissance woman.  These are the words of our next guest, Aishani Aatraesh. Aishani is an employee at Distributed Bio and is developing a computational analysis pipeline for Tumbler, a technology that makes and analyzes hundreds of millions of variants of a starting antibody. In this episode, Jan had the privilege of interviewing a member of the Podcast Hall of Fame. Dave Jackson. Unlike many other people who know how to podcast, Dave has been a technical trainer for over 20 years. This means he not only understands the technology but can explain it in a plain English “geek-speak free” environment. “In 2005 I said podcasting was going to change the world, and it is – and continues to on a daily basis. For me, podcasting is a mixture of everything I love. It's creative, it's technical, and its a way that I can help people." In this episode Jan and RJ interview Airforce Veteran and President of Walsh University Dr. Tim Collins. Dr. Collins spent the past 14 years at Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory, the nation’s oldest and largest university-affiliated research center based in Maryland. Collins also spent 23 years in the U.S. Air Force, including eight years as a senior officer responsible for operations in the United States and Asia. In 1976 Dr. Collins graduated from high school at age 16 followed by a two-year journey through the Georgia Military College where he received his associate degree in engineering. He then enrolled in the U.S. Air Force Academy. In the episode we discuss just how intense the service academies are, and how they are considered liberal arts institutions. The apex of this episode includes a conversation stemming from the events around a terrorist attack on Khobar Towers in 1996. Dr. Collins earned a purple heart after being wounded at Khobar Towers. The bomb wounded hundreds of troops and claimed the lives of 19 service members. The conversation came to an end with Dr. Collins offering advice to emerging leaders, leaders that are actively trying to lead in a crisis, as well as how he manages stressful situations.
