Description

On 6th October 1987, a newborn baby is found on the verge of a remote country lane in Suffolk. Police comb the area for clues and appeal for witnesses, but the mother is never found. The baby, Jess, is adopted. Journalist Lucy Greenwell has never forgotten the day when Jess was discovered. She was a child and lived nearby. For decades Lucy has wondered; what happened to Jess, and what could have driven a mother to leave her child in such an isolated place? When Lucy tracks Jess down, she finds a woman already deep in her own search for the truth, and a story far more tangled than either of them expected. What unfolds is a tale of long-held secrets and unintended consequences that spirals out of Jess’s control.

An excellent piece of journalism. As a victim of a controlling (and violently abusive) relationship, I appreciated the discussion of how Kirat *was* controlled, abused, and harmed by this relationship even though it was long-distance (not to mention fraudulent) one. The fear she has of being thought gullible mimics the fear many victims of abuse have of being thought stupid. I've had people quite unthinkingly say to me that they're surprised to hear my history of a near-decade-long abusive relationship because they "thought [I was] too smart for that." It's actively harmful and only perpetuates abusive and controlling relationships to engage in what really is a type of victim blaming where you other the victim as some sort of 'gullible' or 'stupid' or 'crazy' person; the reality is that *anyone* could fall victim to such a dangerously manipulative, abusive person. I'd recommend this podcast to anyone, but I will warn that the content may be triggering to those who have suffered through a controlling relationship of some kind.
Wow! Where to begin?? A jawdropping account of malicious catfishing over many years and the devastation it left behind. Catfishing is a concept new to me and listening to this story has made me think it's high time it was made a procecutable crime. The lackadaisical attitude towards this case by the police added insult to injury for the victim and I can only wonder at her strength and ability to rise above it all and carry on. Perhaps this crime - and that is truly what it is - needs a #MeToo movement of its own.
Pretty good dive into a catfish story. Told mostly from the side of the victim, it really goes in to how sick and dedicated the catfisher was, and honestly, how good they were at it. Respectful of the people involved and well done.
