Can meditation really help treat erectile dysfunction?  Most men will encounter sexual problems at one time or another. In reality, studies have found that as many as 42% of men report having encountered at least one sexual problem alone in the last year. When faced with such issues, many men turn to their physicians to seek medical treatment; however, this is not always the most beneficial or cost-effective solution since many sexual difficulties have psychological origins. When problems like distraction or performance anxiety are the real cause, taking a drug is unlikely to improve.

For this cause, researchers are gradually turning their attention to non-medical therapies that can help men avoid and overcome sexual issues. Mindfulness has been described as "non-judgmental, present-moment awareness," which simply means being at the moment—being mindful of your thoughts, emotions, and body sensations, without deciding whether they are right or wrong. 

In other words, it's a way to concentrate and shift your attention to your body.  You're basically "tuning in" to your senses and "tuning out" your mental distractions.  You don't care of anything other than what you feel and experience physically.

Modern mindfulness techniques go way beyond those established by Masters and Johnson in the sense that they can be practiced independently or with a partner, and include paying attention to more than just a sense of touch—breathing, tone, taste, and other sensory feedback is part of what people are advised to pay attention to.

So far, the bulk of research on mindfulness and sexual problems has concentrated on women, and the findings have been remarkable. Studies have shown that mindfulness meditation dramatically increases sexual appetite and enthusiasm, vaginal lubrication, and sexual pleasure.

Research has only just begun to investigate the impact of mindfulness on male sexual problems, but the findings indicate that it is equally successful.

Prostate cancer is the most common cancer diagnosed in men, affecting nearly 200,000 new males per year in the United States alone. While survival rates are high, prostate cancer treatment sometimes results in sexual side effects.

Brotto believes that mindfulness has the ability to benefit these men considerably, since the sexual problems they experience are exacerbated by sexual distress, improvements in the body image during treatment, and the challenge of having been diagnosed with cancer.

If you're interested in using mindfulness methods to enhance your own sex life, where do you start? "Start by doing 10 minutes per day of formal mindful practice in your chair. Choose one time and do it every day," says Brotto. "In those 10 minutes, guide your attention to different locations in your body and ask yourself, 'What do I feel?' Always focus on the sensations themselves, not the story behind the sensations."
