The first half of this conversation can be summed up as: rich people have a bad rap, so lots of rich people like to pretend to be middle class. This is such a difficult problem to care about that I was surprised that the guest had not only done her thesis on it, she had gone on to write a book about it.As I was about to bail, the conversation took a turn and got a little more interesting. It turns out, some wealthy people feel so bad about being wealthy that they are giving away some of their wealth in a way that might change our current systems of inequality. Spoiler alert: not that much money (they are still wealthy), and the wealth gap continues to widen.1% problems are rough, I guess.
The title fooled me as this conversation was a let down. The guest who authored a book based on her encounters with rich people as a hotel maid and her friends who happened to be rich or connected her to rich individuals/families. First of all, generalization is never recommended or appreciated when facts are presented. Who are the guests demographics? Americans … Rich tourists who visited the UK… Internationally based residents ..In this conversation, none was outlined and Rich people is used loosely on every statement. “Rich” people are being presented as ashamed of their vast wealth that many of them pass themselves as Middle Class??? How on earth did the guest came into this conclusion when she conducted ZERO study. I’m surprised that the host didn’t challenge the Guest’s claims.
