imageAs business owners and entrepreneurs we all have influencers we look up to, but how can we connect and actually build friendships with them? A woman who is incredibly successful at doing this in a genuine way is Selena Soo.

Selena joins us on this episode of The New Business Podcast to talk about how to get closer to influencers and how to avoid the common mistakes most people make when reaching out to their role models.

The first step to networking with the heavy hitters is to know who they are. Selena recommends making a list of your short-term, long-term and personal goals. Then look for people who achieved your same goals and are a few steps ahead of you: these are your influencers.

In this episode, you ll learn about:

  • What is influence exactly?
  • Is there anyone Selena wants to connect with but hasn’t yet??
  • Does your business have to be at a certain level before you reach out?
  • Selena shares the secret to getting someone to say yes to you.
  • Why being genuine is so important when reaching out to influencers.
  • How to get on someone s radar without being seen as just another fan .
  • Much, much more!

I get asked all the time how to get started with blogging, what software to use, and what host to sign-up to. My answer is always the same, Bluehost is the BEST startup hosting company out there. Not only do they have great support and a super easy to use user interface, but they even through in a free domain name upon signup – what could be sweeter?! I even put together a free tutorial video (just 10-minutes long!) that walks you through everything you need to know to go from zero to blogging hero!

Now that you know who your influencers are you can begin connecting with them. Social media and their web sites or newsletters are all great places to start.

Follow them and consume their content. Then take action based on what you learned. When their work has made a positive impact in your life in some way, reach out to them and let them know either via social media or an email.

This is often where people make some common mistakes, including sending  lengthy emails. Selena s recommendation to avoid these pitfalls is to remember to respect other people s time. When you write to them, keep your emails simple, brief and to the point (not 17 paragraphs of your life s story with multiple questions interwoven!).

You can even add a sentence at the end that says no response needed . When you are emailing your influencer you want to enhance their lives, not make more work for them.

Selena and I also go into specifics on how to stay in touch with an influencer after your initial contact, how to build rapport with them and how NOT to pitch an idea or suggestion! Check out the full scoop on today s show!
