Peptides Unveiled: The Best Peptide Stacks For Anti-Aging, Growth Hormone, Deep Sleep, Hair Loss, Enhanced Cognition & Much More!
Ben Greenfield Fitness
Since releasing a previous podcast episode about peptides, I've received a ton of questions about them, including: -What's the best way to store peptides and for how long are they stable? -What's the most updated anti-aging peptide stack? -What's the best nootropic or cognition enhancing peptide formula? -Can peptides be used to slow or stop hair loss? -What's the unique peptide that stops gas and bloating in its tracks? So on today's podcast I have two guests. The first guest, Dr. William Seeds is a leading researcher and educator in the field of peptides. He is a Medical Doctor board certified in Orthopedic Surgery, Sports Medicine. Anti Aging and Regenerative Medicine. Dr. Seeds provides this leading edge care at the world renowned Spire Institute, Olympic Training Center in Geneva, Ohio. He has treated athletes from all over the world, helping them compete on the playing field and fulfill their dreams of winning gold metals. As a consultant for ABC’s Dancing with the Stars, he enables their dancers to stay competitive and recapture their careers after injury. Dr. Seeds is the Medical Director for the New Initiative of Regenerative Medicine at the NFL's Hall of Fame in Canton, Ohio Dr. Seed's passion is bringing Peptide Medicine to the forefront as treatment of all major disease processes, traumatic injuries as well as Mental, Addiction and pain disorders. As a researcher of peptide therapy protocols for over 25 years Dr. Seeds Founded and Chairs the International Peptide Society. The only Organization with Certification and Fellowship Training in Peptide Therapies. This academic medical society leads the forefront as the Authority in Peptide practices and is the leader in Education for Physician, and health care providers. Mr. Jeremy Delk, my other guest, has been a successful entrepreneur for over a decade, with a keen eye for innovative new products, technologies and unexploited market niches. Mr. Delk utilized the financial acumen he learned in the financial sector with Fidelity Investments, while working in both Boston and NYC, to incorporate Delk Enterprises in 2002. With the growth of Delk Enterprises, Mr. Delk made the decision to move back to his native Kentucky focusing on the growth of his company, which includes the peptides arm Tailor Made Compounding. Over time, Mr. Delk expanded Delk Enterprises from primarily a real estate holdings firm to a diversified private equity portfolio including equity holdings in animal health, sports medicine, human health care, pharmacy & creating access to future IP through strategic investments in technology and human health R&D initiatives. Today positively disrupting healthcare through portfolio companies and other strategic investments is where his primary focus lies. During our discussion, you'll discover: -Just what is a peptide, exactly...7:45 Natural signaling agent made up of amino acids, sequences, chains, etc. Reproduces what the body already knows to do in signaling, neurotransmitters, hormones, enzymes, etc. Maintain a state of neutrality in a cell "We can find the pathways involved in cellular progression into generation, and change it by isolating the signaling agents that aren't working and induce it via a peptide" "Cells are intelligent; we're just giving it the ability to show its intelligence" Impacting neurodegenerative disease, diabetes, autoimmune dysfunction and more Peptides are not new; what's new is the ability to hold the peptide in the system and pinpoint the synthesis in the cells The lack of intellectual property protection causes some hesitancy among pharmaceutical companies to proceed full speed ahead on peptide R&D -How peptides can be used for an anti-aging protocol...14:20 "Aging is a disease, the #1 risk factor for everything..." Cells have different receptors to detect problems (infection, environmental stressor, etc.) Cell can organize itself and take on the adaptive stress Allostatic load: Wear and tear on the body as it is exposed to repeated or chronic stress Phenotype: The composite of the organism's observable characteristics or traits True senescent state: The condition in which cells change their phenotype Autophagy: The natural, regulated mechanism of the cell that removes unnecessary or dysfunctional components. Certain peptides can naturally upregulate cellular autophagy, thus slowing down the aging process -Which peptides should the consumer consider for an anti-aging protocol...21:05 It will vary depending on the individual A cell is like a see-saw: AMPK and mTOR AMPK gives the cell energy (calorie restriction and intermittent fasting) mTOR builds the cell back up If mTOR is always going, you can't have autophagy MOTS-c is a "magic bullet" for autophagy Corrects metabolic imbalances Improves metabolic flexibility of muscle FOX04 induces a cell into apoptosis; specific to senescent cells (cell directive) The protocol and schedule for each peptide will vary on the state and health of the user MOTS-c works by downregulating Glycogen synthase kinase 3 (GSK-3) If you can control GSK-3, you can control a great deal of disease processes in a cell Humanin is a mitochondrial derived peptide in the same category as MOTS-c; it has specific functions in the body when used Human in slightly more complicated in determining the dosage and mode of injection than MOTS-c Is there a protocol that would alternate MOTS-c, FOX04 and Humanin? Yes, but be aware of what mechanisms you're improving and what you're slowing down -The peptide Ben recently discovered to help with SIBO and gut stability...45:15 LL37 was discussed on Super Human Radio w/ Carl Lanore LL37 can be very powerful, but also the wrong thing to use The gut can go very well or very wrong It only works if we have all the bacteria we should all have working for us If you're feeding the gut the right nutrients, the microbes make short-chain fatty acids The gut produces its own LL37 when its functioning properly LL37 can induce discomfort and nausea if used to fight SIBO -How to best inform one's self on the proper use of peptides...52:00 They should be used under the care of a properly educated physician The International Peptide Society is a self-governing body created for oversight and accountability Other industries (such as stem cells) have suffered due to the lack of a similar organization NYT Article: At the Heart of a Vast Doping Network, an Alias -Peptide protocols to use for hair loss...58:45 PTD-DBM Used to affect suppression of Wnt/β-catenin pathway Upregulate the pathway that rescues the stem cell from being suppressed Thymosin-Beta 4 (TB4) goes after senescent cells that affect interleukin 1 beta TB500 is a generic form of TB4 GHK-Cu Valproic acid Microderm abrasion -Peptide stacks that are good for memory and cognition...1:05:25 FGL puts microglial cells into a quiescent state FGL improves already normally functioning memory; a sign it's on the right track Neuro inflammation is a big problem in the current day and age of busyness, lack of sleep, etc. Dihexa upregulates brain-derived neurotropic factors Can change a pro-inflammatory microglial cell into an anti-inflammatory one It's applied topically -Facts around ghrelin and the GHS-R1a and GHS-R1b and how it effects dosing of the GH secretagogues...1:12:05 -And much more! Carnivore Diet, Cleaning Out Your Colon, Eating Brains, Hunting Zebras & Much More With Paul Saladino.
Ben Greenfield Fitness
Carnivore diet expert Dr. Paul Saladino was my guest on the show "The Truth About The Carnivore Diet: Everything You Need To Know About Dangers, Benefits, Mistakes & Hacks For Eating Only Meat." And now he's back! In this episode, we discuss my time at the Swiss Mountain Clinic, liver detoxes, European Biological Medicine, peptides, spirituality, hunting, survival, homemade pesto, BFR training, the carnivore diet (of course!) and much more. Throughout the course of his life, Paul Saladino has embarked on many adventures that have shaped his personal interests – including his unique, individualized approach to medicine. After studying chemistry at College of William he spent 6 years traveling and exploring. Highlights included a thru-hike of the Pacific Crest Trail from Mexico to Canada, a summer in the New Zealand backcountry, and 2 years skiing and climbing in Wyoming's Teton Mountains. He returned to academic studies after these adventures, first becoming a physician assistant and practicing in cardiology before training at the University of Arizona, obtaining his M.D. in 2015. He is a certified Functional Medicine practitioner (IFMCP) through the Institute for Functional Medicine and will complete his residency in psychiatry at the University of Washington this June. When he is not researching connections between nutritional biochemistry and chronic disease he can be found in the frigid waters of the pacific northwest in search of the perfect wave. But I think I may depart from your advice just a bit by including carbs in my morning meal. I've experimented with putting off carb consumption until the evening, and my energy levels throughout the day haven't been to my satisfaction. While my main focus is performance, I was hoping to hear your thoughts on what tradeoffs from a health and longevity standpoint I might be facing by introducing carbs early in the day. Held Hostage: How The FDA Is Keeping You From Using Your Own Stem Cells (& What You Can Do About It)
Ben Greenfield Fitness
"Held Hostage. The FDA ruled last week that your own stem cells from your own fat are a drug and only they have jurisdiction over them. All stem cell treatments using your own cells in the USA now must be from bone marrow. Japan, Panama and many other progressive countries have moved in the opposite direction and have approved stem cells from your fat for their citizens due to the high safety and efficacy rate. This affects all of us. Big Pharma is now regulating your body. Legally." My podcast guest on today's show, Dr. Tami Meraglia is a double board certified MD, who recently posted to a private Facebook group we are both part of the message above. I found this post so disturbing that I invited her on my podcast to discuss the current state of stem cells and legality in the US and we take a deep dive on this show. Dr. Meraglia is the author of The Nationally Best Selling book The Hormone Secret and the CEO of Global Stemology and Seattle Stem Cell Center, the only Stem Cell Clinic in the Nation that provides complimentary hormone, nutrition and inflammation program to every stem cell patient. She is keynote speaker for the American Academy of Anti-Aging and conferences in the US, Canada, Asia and Dubai. She has appeared on Good Morning America, Fox National News and has hosted multiple radio shows. After an illustrious career in the ballet, she discovered that she had a great talent for chemistry; combining that with her intense desire to make a difference and a career in medicine was launched. During our discussion, you'll discover: -Tami's history in the realm of stem cells, and how she began using them in her practice...8:55 Her dad had COPD (Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease) Research to save his life led to stem cells over and over Initial treatments, while positive results, took 3-6 months or longer to see any results Further research led to knowledge of supplements, sleep, even quantum physics Book: Bruce Lipton's "Biology of Belief" "Look to the environment, not the cells" Negative thoughts can lead to the immune system shutting down Dr. Dawson Church's book "Mind to Matter" Carotenoids and the risk of developing lung cancer: a systematic review Carotenoids should be ingested as food in order to see any efficacy -How the FDA is currently regulating stem cells...15:26 Many stem cell clinics store their cells at U.S. Stem in Florida U.S. Stem uses a collaganese enzyme to break down fat and access the stem cells U.S. Stem was issued a cease and desist by the FDA Anything that is more than "minimally manipulated" (by the FDA's parameters) has become a drug, and therefore must be regulated by the FDA It must go through a pharmaceutical manufacturing process Extremely expensive process; pharmaceutical companies will profit handsomely while delivering an inferior product "Why should the FDA say we have the right to one source of stem cells and not the other?" The next wave of stem cell scrutiny will be with bone marrow Big Pharma perhaps sees stem cell industry as a threat to the status quo, hence this legal action Pain is a perceptive thing; the procedure isn't really painful Bone marrow transplant is as good or better than fat -How concerned consumers can get involved with this issue should they wish to do so...26:40 An attorney has been retained by several previous stem cell patients It's a waiting game The judge ordered all stem cells stored at U.S. Stem to be destroyed Thousands of people wrote letters asked for a stay on the motion, and it worked Visit if you'd like to be involved -The current legality of non-autologous stem cell sources...32:45 very small embryonic-like stem cells (vsels) are not stem cells antigen-specific immunoglobulin expressing cells synonymous with adult pluripotent stem cell (apsc) Dr. Holland Chen CoQ10 NAD antioxidants VSEL's require a light and temperature stress They pass the blood brain barrier -The type of protocols co-administered with stem cells to increase their efficacy...36:20 Can't be done with the typical Western medicine mentality If your stem cells are seeds that are growing, the soil in which it grows matters a great deal There's "clean" lifestyle and there are things that help the stem cells and the mitochondria that supports them Stem cells are attracted to areas of inflammation Don't waste them on the gut when the gut can be healed in other ways Modern farming practices make our soil deficient in magnesium -About the upcoming documentary and masterclass Tami is producing...41:15 Fasting to up regulate stem cells Intermittent fasting is ideal for most 24 hour fast is necessary for some Every spiritual discipline in the world includes fasting -Under the radar procedures related to stem cells Tami does in her practice...44:05 IV administered Nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NAD) Hyperbaric oxygen Hormones (pellet insertions) Popular with physicians who are procedure oriented BGF Podcast w/ Jay Campbell (ref. testosterone cream vs. injection) Tami's book The Hormone Secret -Why Tami is a strong advocate for the use of progesterone...56:11 "If there was a fire in my house, I'd grab my children and my progesterone..." Sleep problems are often because of a progesterone deficiency A lot of men are on progesterone (if estrogens are high) Stimulates "osteo blasts" Use caution in administering it (recommend by doctor's prescription) -Whether or not PEMF is used for the upregulation of stem cells in bone marrow...1:01:30 Rife therapy BGF article on overcoming giardia (re: rife therapy as mentioned) Tami will use PEMF outside of the U.S. Tami prays for each of her patients The Christian Gratitude Journal at The Healing Power Of Prayer? A Little-Known Secret To Fix Your Vagus Nerve, Banish Constipation, Use Nicotine As A Biohack & Much More!
Ben Greenfield Fitness
A few months ago, I briefly mentioned on a podcast that I discovered that by taking a specific blend of nutrients to support my vagus nerve, I was able to completely get rid of morning constipation. Today, my podcast guest, Dr. Diana Driscoll, is the individual who actually designed that blend, and who knows a heckuva lot about the vagus nerve and its interplay with our bodies. Dr. Diana Driscoll is an optometrist who had always been healthy - she was also a bit of an exercise fanatic who also geeked out with nutrition. But despite this history, she was struck down by an illness that few understood and was disabled for over a decade. Ultimately, she was diagnosed with something called POTS (Postural Orthostatic Tachycardia Syndrome) - a disorder of the autonomic nervous system and was told there was no cure for this mysterious condition. When her children also became ill and doctors had no answers, she formed Genetic Disease Investigators to formally study these conditions. Dr. Driscoll is considered to be “the patients researcher”, bypassing notoriously slow academic research institutions to get answers quickly. Twelve years later, she is now the director of POTS Care – the only POTS Clinic focused on searching for the underlying cause of POTS, and treating it at its source. She has received two patents to date, and is now not only helping patients who are ill -- she is reaching out to healthy folks who want to improve their quality of life and maximize their health, even into old age. Dr. Driscoll graduated summa cum laude from both The University of Houston College of Optometry and The University of Texas at Austin. She is a geek, through and through. She is a member of the International Society of Neurovascular Disease, the American Headache Society, the Medical Advisory Board for EDS Network C.A.R.E.S, the American Optometric Association, the Tear Film and Ocular Surface Society, and served as a medical advisor for the Ehlers-Danlos National Foundation.   Her peer-reviewed medical abstracts include those involving vascular abnormalities in the fundus of POTS patients, the etiology of left ventricular diastolic dysfunction, and the use of acetazolamide in multiple sclerosis. She is the author of “The Driscoll Theory” and “Your Eyes and EDS”, and was the chief author of the “Ophthalmology Medical Resource Guide” for Ehlers-Danlos National Foundation.  Dr. Driscoll is the recipient of numerous awards for patient advocacy and continues to donate her time to help others across the globe through her online forum and videos on YouTube. Her work in chronic inflammation, the autonomic nervous system, collagen disorders, and organ dysfunction can help others live their best life, as well as have their best body and mind. During our discussion, you'll discover: -Diana's story and how she first became interested in her field of work...8:15 Contracted a virus during a missions trip to Costa Rica, but she was unable to kick it Difficulty breathing Poor sleep Racing heart Poor digestion Developed a tremor Memory loss Difficulty handling any type of stress Her kids began to develop similar symptoms Treatment included more exercise; but nothing worked Was disabled due to fatigue for over a decade -The results of Diana's studies and research...14:15 "Layers of discovery" over the course of several years Diana's blog The Driscoll Theory Abnormal inter cranial pressure Inflammation was a factor The exaggerated symptoms actually made it easier to discover the causes Genetics play a large role (her children experienced the same symptoms) Started by looking at the eyes (great window into systemic illness) -A working definition of POTS...21:20 POTS is not a disease, it's a symptom There was no specific diagnosis for her condition Dysfunction of the autonomic nervous system ALS/Parkinson's begin with POTS symptoms Astronauts get POTS while in space, due to the lack of gravity -How dysfunction of the vagus nerve is correlated with POTS...24:30 The abnormal inter cranial pressure is indicative of a poorly functioning vagus nerve When symptoms occur simultaneously (difficulty breathing, racing heart, gut dysfunction, etc.) it could be the vagus nerve Ileocecal valve is linked to POTS and nerve function Vagus nerve controls the function of the valve Gastro motility linked to migrating motor complex (cleaning up digestive system) Triggered by signals from the vagus nerve -The nicotine-induced method Diana devised to repair the ileocecal valve...30:10 A kidney stone turned up 3 days after being cleared for kidney stones The doctor confirmed the ileocecal valve was problematic A surgeon refused to open the valve Two parts of vagus nerve: preganglionic (extremely long) and postganglionic (extremely short) Diana tried to stimulate the postganglionic nerve The vagus nerve is a nicotinic acido cholinergic nerve (nicotine is the imitator of the vagal neurotransmitter) She put a nicotine patch over the side of the ileocecal valve Within hours, the symptoms began to subside This changed the way Diana viewed the cause of the problem: It wasn't an autoimmune condition affecting the receptors It was either a preganglionic vagus nerve or a neurotransmitter problem Ultimately nicotine was not a viable long-term solution -The long-term solution Diana used to address her problem...40:10 Parasym Plus (use code GREENFIELD for 10% off on all products) Established goals: Use supplements already deemed safe by the FDA Wanted it to work in spite of genetic issues Stimulate postganglionic nerve just as nicotine did Cross the blood-brain barrier to help cognition Vagus nerve problems can be mistaken for acetylcholine production issues and vice versa CHAT gene provides instructions for making a protein called choline acetyltransferase It needed to account for nutrient malabsorption Finding the right balance between stimulation and overstimulation of the vagus nerve was a challenge Parasym is not a stool softener or a laxative; it allows a normal bowel movement by making the vagus nerve work properly Primary ingredients: Huperzine, Acetyl-L-carnitine, Alpha glycerylphosphorylcholine Onnit Alpha Brain (use BEN for a 10% discount) Diana was able to acquire a patent because of the unique blend (and balance) of ingredients; it's not just another nootropic -The importance of the eyes in discovering vagal nerve issues...51:50 Pupil size is an indicator of the condition of the autonomic nervous system The sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous systems are out of balance, resulting in large pupil sizes High sensitivity to light Pupils responded more consistently than HRV -How to test for acetylcholine problems...55:00 Need to look for symptoms; there's no codified way of testing for problems Genetic tests can identify issues to a limited degree -The amount of time one can expect to use Parasym...58:00 Some will always need help Feeling "good enough" can be deceptive Vagus nerve is the anti-inflammatory pathway of the body Reasons typical stimulants of the vagus nerve won't work: Damage to the nerve Genetic issues Some inflammatory psydochines block the release of acetylcholine -The current direction of Diana's work and research in light of her discoveries thus far...1:03:00 -And much more...
