David Welsh is a historian and author whose work focuses on labor, technology, and social change in modern Europe. His forthcoming book, The Social Railway and Its Workers in Europe’s Modern Era, 1880–2023: Moments of Fury, Ramparts of Hope (Bloomsbury, 2025), examines the intertwined histories of rail transport and the lives of the workers who powered it, tracing themes of industrialization, protest, solidarity, and resilience over more than a century. Welsh’s scholarship engages with both social and cultural history, highlighting how railways shaped collective identities and public life, while also documenting the struggles and hopes of the people who sustained them.
