Chinwe Iwu-Jaja is a pharmacist, public health specialist
My guest today is Dr Chinwe Iwu-Jaja, a public health specialist, originally from Nigeria and based in South Africa. In this episode, we learn that away from the science she's a convener for "Gals International FrankTalk (GIFT)"  a group that discusses various topics that concern women in the 21st century. With regards to how her interest in public health started, she attributes this to when she was younger and she visited the local clinics. Chinwe says that she saw the public health posters and she was eager to be involved in this field. Currently, she is a post-doc at Stellenbosch University, involved in different projects. Due to the prevalence of the pandemic, it has forced researchers to deviate their research and focus on the virus. We discuss one of the projects where she wrote several comments on the COVID-19 pandemic. In particular "The impact of burial ceremonies on the spread COVID-19". Further, we talk about her blog called "Health facts with Chinwe", where she shares health information with the public. Lastly, we unpack the importance of public health experts in the dissemination of accurate information and the backfire that they sometimes face educating people who do not agree with their expert views.
