Daniel J. Conklin, Ph.D., is a Professor of Medicine and University Scholar in the Division of Environmental Medicine at the University of Louisville (Louisville, KY). He received a doctorate in cardiovascular physiology from the University of Notre Dame (1995), and he was an NIEHS-Postdoctoral Fellow at the University of Texas Medical Branch (Galveston, TX; 1996-1998) where he trained with Dr. Paul Boor, M.D., Dept. of Pathology, in cardiovascular toxicology. From 1998-2003, Dr. Conklin was an Assistant and then Associate Professor in the Department of Biological Sciences at the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire. In 2003, Dr. Conklin came to the University of Louisville to conduct research in “Environmental Cardiology” with Drs. Aruni Bhatnagar, Ph.D. and Sanjay Srivastava, Ph.D. As a current member of the Envirome Institute, he directs the Inhalation Facility and the Animal Models and Phenotyping Core for the Diabetes and Obesity Center, American Heart Association (AHA)-Tobacco Regulation and Addiction Center (ATRAC), and the Superfund Research Center. His NIH-funded research has been published in over 115 peer-reviewed articles, book chapters and invited reviews/editorials with emphasis on health effects of exposures to aldehydes, air pollution and tobacco product smoke/aerosols. For the past 16 years, he regularly has served as a peer reviewer on a number of NIH (NHLBI, NIEHS) study sections, was co-chair/chair of an AHA Great Rivers Affiliate Vascular Biology Study Section, and on the Tobacco-Related Disease Research Program (TRDRP; California). He currently is an Associate Editor of the journal Toxicology and Applied Pharmacology (2007-present) and is on the Editorial Board of Circulation Research (2015-present). He is an active member of the Society of Toxicology (SOT; 2001-present) and is a Past-President of the Cardiovascular Toxicology Specialty Section (CVTSS) and the Ohio Valley Regional Chapter (OVSOT). He is also a member of the Stem Cell (SCSS) and the Inhalation and Respiratory Specialty Sections (IRSS) of SOT as well as a member of the AHA and the American Physiological Society (APS). His past times include evolution, dark chocolate, a passing fancy with “low carb” diets, craft beer and wood working.
