After graduation from Loyola University in New Orleans with a degree in physics, he served as a Communications Officer in the Strategic Air Command (SAC) and was part of the acquisition team for the first ever computerized military command and control system. After his tour of duty with the Air Force, he joined IBM Federal Systems Division, working on the Apollo Flight Support Team at the Manned Spaceflight Center (MSC) in Houston. He was on the console when Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin left the first man-made footprints on the moon.He then transferred to other locations to support IBM contracts for the Air Force satellite system watching for missile launches, and Navy contracts for anti-submarine warfare systems in Pennsylvania, New York, and Virginia. He was part of the development team which produced the acoustic signal processor used to detect enemy submarines, the system featured in Tom Clancy’s novel, The Hunt for Red October. As a participant in the Exchange of Distinguished Engineers and Scientists Program between the United States and France, in 1985 and again in 1986 he was invited by the French Embassy to visit France as a state guest to discuss his software reliability work. During this time, he also completed his law studies and was admitted to the Virginia Bar in 1982.In 1989 the Department of Defense invited him to be one of five people chosen from industry and government to develop a special course at the DoD Computer Institute for senior civilian and flag officers in acquisition management. He accepted, entered government service, and upon completion of the assignment the organization became the Information Resources Management College of the National Defense University at Ft. McNair in Washington DC.In 1990 he transferred to the Defense Acquisition University at Fort Belvoir where he served as a Professor of Acquisition Management as well as Director of Consulting and Acquisition Research. While at DAU, He served a term on the Board of Examiners of the National Malcolm Baldrige Award. His doctorate is in the Program Management of Science, Technology and Innovation, with a minor in Leadership. His dissertation is on Critical Success Factors for DoD Program Management. He retired from Government service in 2003. He then joined The MITRE Corporation, working in support of DoD and the Intelligence Community (IC). He was one of the six core members on the team which conducted a congressionally directed Independent Assessment of a major IC program from September 2005 through January 2006. In 2011 and again in 2013 he was part of the four-person team which conducted an independent assessment of a Department Of Justice (DOJ) unit in Clarksburg, WV at the request of the FBI Deputy Director. He retired from MITRE in 2015 and embarked on a new career as a writer. He has an author page on Amazon. He has taught adult religious education at his parish since 1994 and wrote a book on spiritual growth titled Take My Hand. He also serves as a spiritual director for some of the parishioners.As a hobby he makes functional pottery in his home studio. You can see photos of some of his pottery on his Facebook page.
