Freddy is a Taiwanese politician, and lead singer of the metal band Chthonic.
China’s overreaching influence in Hollywood is something that’s just become apparent. In Taiwan, however, this has been a reality for our creative industries for at least two decades. Today, Freddy and Emily lay down what Taiwan has learned from CCP censorship and the slippery slope to self-censorship. Freddy recounts being threatened by Chinese students when Chthonic was on tour with Arch Enemy. The bands held a “to hell with them” attitude: the spirit of resistance is the core of metal and rock music. Freedom of expression is the foundation of all works of art. Creators should not abide by the arbitrary rules of authoritarian governments just to enter their markets. We also remember the late-president Lee Teng-Hui who passed away at the end of July. This is Metalhead Politics, a show about music, politics, and Taiwan. In this third episode, we get funky and talk about mummies, statues, and tales of horror - all legacies of Taiwan’s 38 years of martial law and White Terror under Chiang Kai-shek’s regime. But most importantly, we talk about how to move forward. This is Metalhead Politics, a show about music, politics, and Taiwan. Co-hosted by Freddy Lim of Chthonic and Emily Y. Episode 2 of METALHEAD POLITICS, a new show by Freddy Lim of Chthonic and Emily Y. Wu of Ghost Island Media. It’s been a hell of a month. Freddy and Emily open with positive updates from Taiwan (adultery is decriminalized; a pro-China populist mayor gets recalled) before diving into the topic of the day. They stand in solidarity with Black Lives Matter and examine systematic oppression in Asia. An estimated one-million people are still in concentration camps in Xinjiang. The Chinese Communist Party performs a force choke on Hong Kong with a National Security Law. Freddy deconstructs how “Millenia’s Faith Undone” went from Taiwanese lyrics to melody. He sings a children’s song, and introduces LMF (Lazy Mutha Fucka 大懶堂), a Cantonese hip-hop group from Hong Kong. Bonus: Freddy teaches Emily how to do a death growl.MUSIC LISTOriginal theme song by CJ;Intermission music “惡世紀 Century of Evil” by LMF (2019);Credit music “Millenia’s Faith Undone” by Chthonic from the album Battlefields of Asura (2018).Music numbers by Chthonic:2:32 “A Crimson Sky’s Command” from the album Battlefields of Asura (2018),10:11 “Takao” from the album Takasago Army (2011),35:25 “Millenia’s Faith Undone” from the album Battlefields of Asura (2018). Music numbers by CJ (keyboard of Chthonic) from the album UNR (2020) 00:52 “God”, 01:50 “The Dark Side”,04:25 “God”,13:13 “Save You”,18:52 “Hero”,20:42 “Save You”,26:09 “True E”,32:07 “Losing the Edge”.WEB | Chthonic | Ghost Island MediaFACEBOOK | Freddy Lim | Chthonic | Ghost Island Media TWITTER | @FreddyLim | @chthonictw | @ghostislandme | @emilyywuINSTAGRAM | @freddylimtt | @chthonictw | @ghostislandme | @emily.y.wuYOUTUBE | Chthonic | Ghost Island Media EPISODE CREDIT | Producers: Emily Y.
