George Pataki is an American lawyer and Republican politician who served as the 53rd governor of New York from 1995 to 2006, winning three consecutive terms. Prior to his governorship, he was mayor of Peekskill from 1981 to 1984, a member of the New York State Assembly from 1985 to 1992, and a New York State senator from 1993 to 1994. As governor, Pataki was noted for his work on criminal justice reform, environmental conservation initiatives, and economic development projects. He played a prominent role in New York’s response to the September 11 attacks, overseeing recovery and redevelopment efforts in lower Manhattan.
