James Arnold Horowitz, better known as James Salter, his pen name and later-adopted legal name, was an author of novels and short stories.
Salter was a career officer and pilot in the United States Air Force until 1957 when his first novel, "The Hunters," was published and he became a full-time author.
Salter went on to publish eight novels. He also wrote screenplays, short stories, and essays. He received numerous literary awards for his works.
