Jarlath Regan is a London-based Irish comedian and podcaster. Regan began An Irishman Abroad, a series of weekly podcasts interviewing Irish people and people of Irish descent about their lives.
Susan Moran is the greatest Irish female basketball player of all time. As the only Irish woman to have ever played in the WNBA, Susan's journey from Tullamore to Philadelphia is an inspiring tale. This conversation was recorded for our Inside Basketball series but it was so good that we decided to give you a little taster of it for our Irishman Abroad listeners. Susan tells Jarlath how she realised basketball was a particular skill of her's (10:00) and how she was scouted by Reggie Grennan which saw her getting a life-changing scholarship to St. Joseph's in Philadelphia (25:00). In the longer-form version of this conversation (which is available tomorrow on the Irishman Abroad: Inside Basketball feed - https://podcasts.apple.com/gb/podcast/an-irishman-abroad-inside-basketball/id1512016776) Susan also tells the incredible story of not getting drafted, the brutal training camp in New York which followed and why the WNBA is the best in the game. But to hear the full, extended cut, of this interview with no ads, in which Susan discusses the art of recruiting players, her thoughts on NCAA players not being paid, The Last Dance and Ireland's relationship with basketball, become a patron of An Irishman Abroad for just the price of a pint on www.patreon.com/irishmanabroad. The incredible life story of writer/director Colin Broderick is one that truly must be heard. This week, you get to do just that. In this refreshingly open and honest conversation, Colin speaks to Jarlath about the post-traumatic stress that he discovered he was suffering from having grown up during the Troubles, resulting in him being emotionally disconnected having witnessed the massacre of people he knew. Colin details his journey in America where he has survived alcoholism, homelessness and prison before telling us the story of how he discovered writing. From the mental breakdown that he suffered writing That's That, to facing his demons head on in Emerald City, the importance of correctly nurturing our youth and much more, this inspirational story of a man who has survived a life of hardship with a true sense of dignity is a much needed listen.   To hear Colin's beautiful words on his approach to writing, his thoughts on Trump being re-elected as well as how he is taking care of his own family in lockdown in New York, become a patron of An Irishman Abroad for just the price of a pint on www.patreon.com/irishmanabroad. Bray-born Dr David Dowling is an immunologist and vaccinologist working at Harvard Medical School. This week he joined Jarlath for a fascinating discussion on all things vaccine-related. David calmly and clearly discusses the realities of finding a vaccine, the various strategies that may be taken along the way and the promising data that is being seen. In these incredibly uncertain times, David's reassuring and informed discussions on how the most vulnerable are considered during the vaccine creation process and his words on the potential of COVID-19 to survive on outdoor surfaces in the sunlight certainly give us reasons to be hopeful. Ardal O'Hanlon made his first appearance on Irishman Abroad over 6 years ago (Episode 19). This week, the beloved actor and comedian makes his much-anticipated return to the show. Ardal speaks about how he was lucky to just finish his tour before lockdown (47:00), why he was elated when a broken laptop caused him to lose 10 years of hard work (41:00) and why he feels his happiness would suffer if he were to become active on social media (28:00). From his reasons for resisting the trappings of fame (25:00) to why he didn't enjoy the surveillance culture of Shanghai (49:00) the absolutely ridiculous story involving Ardal, Moby, My Lovely Horse, a helicopter and 80,000 people (55:00) this is a thoroughly much-needed lighthearted and insightful chat with a true gentleman of Ireland comedy.
