Jess Fairfax is an experienced event and project producer, radio maker, presenter, musician, poet and educator. She is inspired by the emotion and rawness of composers such Olafur Arnolds and the pop-drenched melodies and high end production of artists like The Weeknd. She is fascinated by the science behind the sounds that trigger our beauty bone, those that make you tingle. She also loves the participatory nature of art and the stories and surprises that emerge through collaboration. Through sound, foley recordings, harmonies, beats and melodies she tries to piece together the parts that transform sounds to sentiment and story, making us feel and connect to one another.Since 2011, Jess has worked as a producer and curator at Multicultural Arts Victoria, coordinating the Emerge Festival, Common Ground: an inter-faith spoken word project and the Visible Music Mentoring Program. She devised ReMastered Myths a creative development program that brings together producers and artists from diverse musical and cultural backgrounds to create new works and programmed the Visible Music Sessions at the Melbourne Festival Hub in both 2014 and 2015.Jess co-presents and produces All Our Stories on Melbourne’s PBS 106.7FM with Leah Avene. The program spotlights local stories and features poets, writers, musicians and passionate minds who arn't always heard in mainstream media. She is passionate about creating spaces for stories to be heard that don’t always have the platform to be voiced,Through her love of sound and storytelling, she has facilitated and mentored new communities and young people in radio production, broadcasting, soundscape creation and audio storytelling though various projects at PBS, Spectrum Migrant Resource Centre and The Murruk Project.Over the last five years Jess has travelled to Swan Hill to work with young people to develop their broadcasting skills and introduce them to the local community radio station SMART 99.1FM. While there, she developed an audio story-telling project that saw personal stories written and edited by the young people, who also composed the soundscapes and effects to accompany the stories. The pieces were presented live alongside an audio performance, with a blindfolded audience on the banks of the Murray River.In 2015 she was selected as one of 12 emerging producers to be part of the National Features and Documentary Series run by the Community Broadcasting Association of Australia. As part of the series she created a 30 minute soundscape/documentary piece exploring relationships and the expectations that arise within them.​She has made feature audio documentaries for All The Best and ABC Radio National's Earshot and is currently developing a show bringing the intimacy of radio onto the stage. Through the use of new technologies, the production incorporates audio grabs, interviews, samples, beats and live music to tell universal stories of love and human needs.Jess has always carried her passion for singing and songwriting. Her music project X ARI combines trip hop with pop and ambient electronica, layered with harmonies and lyrics that draw on her love for the metaphor. Her first single Float Away was co-written with producer Thomas “Soup” Campbell, and released in January 2016.
