John Lawrence Ashbery was a poet and art critic, known as the most influential American poet of his time. His work was marked by postmodern complexity and opacity, and is still controversial. Ashbery published more than 20 volumes of poetry and won many major American awards for poetry, including a Pulitzer Prize in 1976.
