Dr. Kyla McMullen is an Associate Professor in the Computer & Information Sciences & Engineering Department at the University of Florida and co‑founder of the Modern Figures Podcast, a trailblazing show that elevates the stories of Black women in computing by mingling academic depth, personal narrative, and practical insight into a compelling weekly conversation. The podcast her show carries a nearly 5‑star rating and has released 75 episodes as of mid‑2025.
As the only Black American woman ever to earn a Ph.D. in Computer Science & Engineering from the University of Michigan (2012), Dr. McMullen channels her journey into transformative mentorship, amplified through her SoundPAD Lab at UF. Her research explores immersive 3D audio interfaces, psychoacoustic sonification, and situational awareness tools in augmented/virtual reality—blending technical innovation with inclusivity.
Driven by a deep commitment to representation, Kyla co-created Modern Figures in 2019 alongside Dr. Waisome, inspired by Hidden Figures, to dismantle the “single story” narrative and foster visibility through interviews with Black women scholars from around the globe. The podcast has been downloaded in over 76 countries and used as a recruitment and mentorship resource by universities and organizations alike
Kyla’s bold and encouraging tone—calling the audience to admit what they don’t know and lean into community—and her belief in accessible storytelling make her not just a voice, but an ally and inspiration to all who aspire to belong and thrive in tech.
