Lane Wilcken is a cultural tattoo artist and advocate for the the critically endangered practice of "batok" or cultural tattoos of the Philippines. He describes his practice as spiritual, and he includes meditation and prayer before composing batok arrangements according to the designs and symbols of a person's specific ethnic group and their personal experience. He tattoos during a ritual that includes chants, food offerings, and prayers, using hand-tapped tattoo techniques.
Wilcken's first book, "Filipino Tattoos: Ancient to Modern," was published in 2010. His second book, "The Forgotten Children of Maui: Filipino Myths, Tattoos, and Rituals of a Demigod," was published in 2013.
