Michelle Dean is a freelance writer, journalist, and critic. She is also the co-creator and executive producer of the Hulu series "The Act," which was based on her reporting. Before beoming a writer, Dean was a lawyer. Dean's work has appeared in The New Yorker, The New Republic, The New York Times Magazine, and Elle. Her first book, "Sharp: The Women Who Made an Art of Having an Opinion," was published in 2018. Dean received her B.A. in History and B.C.L. in Civil Law from McGill University, and her L.L.M. from the University of Toronto.
