Hiemstra is a political, cultural, and feminist geographer, and her interests include global migration, immigration enforcement practices, detention and deportation, homeland security, borders, gender, race, Latin America, and feminist epistemology and methodologies. She is an Associate Professor of Women's, Gender, and Sexuality Studies, and Director of Undergraduate Studies at Stony Brook University.
