Ex Machina was one of the best sci-fi films in recent memory.  Director Alex Garland's follow-up, ANNIHILATION is now out and stars Natalie Portman in the center of another heady dive into the realm of fiction and science.  We begin the show by reviewing the film in broad terms as to not spoil anything for those who have not yet seen the film.  Following that we go headlong into spoiler territory to discuss the greater meanings of the production and whether it satisfies the questions offered.  Join Pete, Adam and Ashley into the shimmer as we are all about annihilation this week.   Visit our website HERE!  Join our Facebook group HERE! Two films separated by nearly 60 years find a lot in common in terms of forbidden live in one aspect or another.  This week we are reviewing Guillermo del Toro's THE SHAPE OF WATER which combines an old school Universal monster subject and injects it with love and fairytales. In addition we look at David Lean's BRIEF ENCOUNTER in where we find two married people that make a connection with one another and must face the reality of what the future will hold and what could be.  It goes much further than that into what we are willing to accept as a society up on the big screen and how our morals change based on scenarios presented.  It's just another week here at THE FILM BASEMENT!
Robert Mitchum's portrayal of Harry Powell is one of the best villains ever put to film.  In 1955's NIGHT OF THE HUNTER we meet the dark preacher that is in desperate search of ten thousand dollars hidden by two children.  When first released it was met with a poor critical response and a low take at the box office.  Over the years the film has earned a status as one of the best ever made.  It's part of my collection but will Adam and Ashley feel it's worthy of their own?  In addition me and Ashley give our thoughts on Great Gerwig's LADY BIRD and I review THREE BILLBOARDS OUTSIDE EBBING MISSOURI.  Lots to discuss, lets go, it's showtime!  Visit our website HERE!  Join our Facebook group HERE! Carol Reeds' THE THIRD MAN holds stature as one of the greatest films ever made.  Pete agrees.  Adam and Ashley have never seen it though.  Without having prior knowledge of the film, does it still hold up and grab an audience in the modern era?  We will discuss that and Kenneth Branagh's adaptation of MURDER ON THE ORIENT EXPRESS on this weeks FILM BASEMENT!  Join our Facebook group HERE Visit our website HERE
