Phil’s unconventional approach to making film and digital media work is exemplified by the unusual awards he has received: an Australian Film Institute Award for the ‘concept’ of a film, a Film Critics Circle of Australia Award for innovative combination of documentary and fiction, an Arts Justice Fellowship from the New South Wales Law Foundation, and a special jury prize in the Free Spirit Competition at the Warsaw Film Festival, with the jury noting Phil’s approach to filmmaking based on community work. Phil also recently received an Australian Podcast Award (The Specialist Award) for an indie podcast, selected by the judges from across all award categories as a podcast that produces ‘exceptional listening experiences for niche audiences and those underrepresented in other Australian media’.
