Skeptical graduate student Helen Lyle (Virginia Madsen) befriends Anne-Marie McCoy (Vanessa Williams) while researching superstitions in a housing project on Chicago's Near North Side. From Anne-Marie, Helen learns about the Candyman (Tony Todd), a knife-wielding figure of urban legend that some of her neighbors believe to be responsible for a recent murder. After a mysterious man matching the Candyman's description begins stalking her, Helen comes to fear that the legend may be all too  real. For the next three weeks, each host of the Madcap Movie Review Podcast will select a horror movie for the Crew to review. Up first, is Shawn's pick, 1988's Child's Play. The original horror classic was directed by Tom Holland, not Spider-Man, people… and starred Catherine Hicks, Chris Sarandon, Alex Vincent as Andy and Brad Dourif as Charles Lee Ray and Chucky. Gunned down by Detective Mike Norris (Chris Sarandon), dying murderer Charles Lee Ray (Brad Dourif) uses black magic to put his soul inside a doll named Chucky -- which Karen Barclay (Catherine Hicks) then buys for her young son, Andy (Alex Vincent). When Chucky kills Andy's baby sitter, the boy realizes the doll is alive and tries to warn people, but he's institutionalized. Now Karen must convince the detective of the murderous doll's intentions, before Andy becomes Chucky's next victim. CL, Derek and Shawn kick it in 1996 for another week to visit the parody cult classic, Don't Be a Menace to South Central While Drinking Your Juice in the Hood. Don't Be a Menace was directed by twenty-two time Emmy award winning television director and producer Paris Barclay in his feature film directorial debut, and produced by comedy legend Keenen Ivory Wayans. The film was written by Shawn and Marlon Wayans, who also star in the lead roles. Innocent young black man Ashtray (Shawn Wayans) is forced to move into a tough Los Angeles slum with his family, including his oddly streetwise, pot-smoking grandma (Helen Martin). Before long, Ashtray's nuclear-armed gangster cousin Loc Dog (Marlon Wayans) introduces him to a bizarrely comic crime underworld. Luckily, Ashtray falls for urban poet Dashiki (Tracey Cherelle Jones), and she convinces him to go straight  -- but he must deal with her manic ex-boyfriend Toothpick (Darrel  Heath). This week, the Madcap crew drops into 1996 and reviews director F. Gary Gray's second feature film, Set if Off, starring Vivica A. Fox) begins working at a janitorial service with her friends Tisean (Kimberly Elise), a single mother; Cleo (Queen Latifah), a boisterous lesbian; and Stony (Jada Pinkett), who is dealing with the recent death of her brother. The women are struggling with their finances, so they decide to start robbing banks. At first the group is successful, but they soon attract the attention of an obsessive detective (John C. McGinley). The film also stars Blair Underwood, Ella Joyce, Dr. Dre, and Thomas Jefferson Byrd (RIP).
