Stan Douglas is a Canadian visual artist born on October 11, 1960, and based in Vancouver, British Columbia. He is known for work in film, photography, installation, and theatre that examines the structures and limits of visual media. Since the late 1980s, Douglas has developed projects that explore how technologies of image making influence perception, historical narrative, and collective memory. His work often draws on specific historical moments, cultural forms, and media conventions, while addressing broader questions about representation and social experience. Douglas has exhibited internationally at major exhibitions including Documenta IX in 1992, Documenta X in 1997, and Documenta XI in 2002, as well as the Venice Biennale in 1990, 2001, 2005, and 2019. He was selected to represent Canada at the Venice Biennale in 2022. His practice continues to engage with the relationship between media, history, and contemporary social realities.
