Cindy is a mother of three who was using drugs during each of her pregnancies. She knew it wasn’t healthy for the babies, but she didn’t know how to safely stop. Fearing the doctors would notify authorities, Cindy was afraid to ask for help. Then one day, she made a call to a hotline. This led her to a doctor who gave her the support she needed, and now Cindy is in recovery and wants to share her story. Nzinga goes over some of the options available to pregnant women and others who are using opioids and gives Cindy a call to check-in. Stephanie Wittels Wachs, despite her best efforts at being disgruntled, remains aggressively delightful. She and I discuss parenting in quarantine, 90 Day Fiance, and her incomprehensible (to herself) decision to get a puppy during a pandemic. We bitched, we laughed, we figured out Ozark (no spoilers) Stephanie is the author of "Everything is Horrible and Wonderful: A Tragicomic Memoir of Genius, Heroin, Love, and Loss" , an AMAZING book about the loss of her brother, Harris. She is also the host of Last Day, a truly remarkable deep-dive into the Opioid Crisis in America, produced by Lemonada Media, of which she is co-founder and Chief Creative Officer. Stephanie Wittels Wachs is an absolute joy to connect with and she has a brilliant way (perhaps much like her late brother Harris Wittels, renowned comedian/writer/actor) of making the most uncomfortable topic oddly comfortable. Rachael and Stephanie both hope to humanize the epidemic of substance abuse disorder and inspire you to want to help make a well-deserved change. Her podcast "Last Day" started as a journey to discover "what happened, and what could we have done differently" in the tragic loss of her brother to a heroin overdose. She's a brilliant comedic mind in her own right, one tough cookie, an author, and a guiding light of how one can find purpose and love in the most tragic of life circumstances.
