Sylvia Shults is a Librarian, Author, and Ghost Hunter.
Rhoda Derry was a victim of our society’s once cruel and bizarre system of treating the mentally ill. Her life was also an example of how one can find peace and overcome such disturbing treatment when matched with the right care. Does the spirit of Rhoda Derry still haunt the last location she called home? Did the horrendous abuse suffered by Rhoda Derry leave a permanent imprint on the world we live in today? Some still claim to see the ghost of Rhoda Derry to this day on the ground of the Peoria State Hospital. Is the ghost of Rhoda Derry Finally at peace? We discuss this tragic story today with Sylvia Shults. What was the first reported encounter of Rhoda after her passing? When The Peoria State Hospital was in operation as a hospital, did the ghost of Rhoda haunt the doctors and patients? What did Rhoda say from the grave when an investigator tried to bring her chewing tobacco? Is Rhoda still suffering in the same way she did in life, on the other side? Is there a way to communicate with Rhoda today? To listen to part two of our interview, you need to be a Grave Keeper (supporter of the show). Sylvia Shults is the author of 44 Years in Darkness, Fractured Spirits: Hauntings at the Peoria State Hospital, and other books of true ghost stories. She has spent the past twenty years working in a library, slowly smuggling words out in her pockets day by day to build a book of her own. She sits in dark, spooky, haunted places so you don't have to. She lives a short, ten-minute motorcycle ride away from the haunted asylum that features in so many of her books. She considers it the highest privilege to share the incredible, compassionate history of the Peoria State Hospital. After battling an intense, lifelong fear of the dark, Sylvia decided to become a ghost hunter. (What WAS she thinking?) As a paranormal investigator, she has made many media appearances, including a tiny part in the Ghost Hunters episode "Prescription for Fear", about the Peoria State Hospital. She is also the writer, director, producer, and host of the true ghost story podcast Lights Out, available on YouTube, iTunes, iHeart Radio, Spotify, and anywhere else great podcasts are found. Tonight Sylvia is here to talk about her book, The Spirits of Christmas: The Dark Side of the Holidays. Who’s ready for a Christmas Ghost Story? Author Sylvia Shults has compiled one of the best collections of true ghost stories from the ghosts of Christmas past. We hear the all too real story behind a famous story told by Edgar Allan Poe. The tale of a man who loved Christmas music so much, that even after his passing, the music continues to play from the site of his cabin in the woods. Also, the true story of a train tragedy that occurs around the holidays and takes the lives of nearly 100. Years after, the train lights can still be seen, but who is on board? We hear these ghostly Christmas stories and my others on a special holiday edition of The Grave Talks.  To listen to part two of our interview, you need to be a Grave Keeper (supporter of the show). Join April, Chris, Kerix and Stacy as they talk with author and paranormal investigator Sylvia Shults.  Sylvia Shults has been working at a library for the past nineteen years, slowly smuggling words out day by day in her pockets in order to make books of her own. She lives in Illinois with her husband, a certifiably insane Husky furbaby, and far too many books for her own good.
