Tommy has a broad range of experience with public speaking serving as a radio personality, and owned a mobile Disc Jockey business for 17 years. After becoming a cancer survivor, he went on to give survivor speeches, which lead to motivation and leadership speaking. Tommy has a Masters in Sport Management & Sport Coaching. He was an Athletic Director, College Basketball Coach, and currently serves as the National Scout Director for RecruitLook, as well as holds countless recruiting seminars.
Monica talks about the early days of softball that did not go as you might think it might have. How she obtained her first pitching lesson and the challenges as a youth player. We talk about how it was at North Salinas HS and the mindset going into her junior year and why Monica felt she had to produce. What it meant to her being part of a 18U team that went to the Canada Cup, the different styles of play from teams that were there from other countries, her summer experience and the food she fell in love with from Canada. Monica reflects on the accomplishment of getting 500 strikeouts. She was the first pitcher to record this feat in all 4 years! She did it in her 33rd game. What it was like being in the zone when she recorded 22 strikeouts vs Florida which is the highest singe game record. Her fondest team achievement at U of Tennessee, being part of the United States National Team and playing for the USA at the Olympics. Monica talks about the first time she went into the game at the Olympics and the feelings that came with it. The process of becoming a professional in Japan and the decision that she almost did not make. She talks about how hard it was being traded away from the USSSA Pride to the Tennessee Diamonds and how signing the $1 million contract hopefully opens more doors for others. We touch on the Monica Abbott Foundation and then go into detail on losing softball in the Olympics and why it is so important to have it as well as being the veteran on the team now. Has she thought about how much longer she will play? We go back to the early days of Barry’s life and what his first aspirations were in life. A fun little conversation about his brief stop at a City College and the why his GPA was good considering….. well, you will find out. In high school he and some friends formed a music group and toured a bit with a stop at The Apollo in New York!Career begin in advertising briefly before being named the promotion director at KCBS, the breaks he got form the right people at the right time which eventually led him to KPIX and in front of the camera for the very first time at a big time network at the time. Barry begin his broadcast career in TV in 1968 and his boxing career in 1976 as he called the gold medal matches for boxing and field hockey in the 76’ Olympics. His first tennis broadcast was no other than Wimbledon and even did the 1978 Rose Bowl! After being in NY and back to SF we talk about the days at HBO and boxing. His famous fights he called that leads to a great, rare story about the Marvin Hagler v Sugar Ray Leonard MegaFight. You want to hear this!Barry tells how he landed the role for Rocky IV, what that was like, a behind the scenes story, the money he received for the doing the movie and the checks that showed up later and still do. Great stuff here.
