The title pretty well explains this one. If you haven’t noticed by now the Simpsons have eerily predicted the future, and not just once but on multiple occasions. Of course because of this there are a few interesting conspiracy theories floating around out there and we wanted to learn more about them.

A few examples are:

  • voting machine fraud — 2008 Season 20 Episode 4: “Tree House of Horror XIX”. Homer was trying to vote for Barack Obama but the machine kept voting for John McCain. In the 2012 election there were machines that were having this exact issue.
  • In 1995 Season 6 Episode 19: “Lisa’s wedding”, her future fiance could verbally communicate with his watch aka smart watch. In 2013 smart watches were brought into market.
  • In 1994 Season 5 Episode 19: “Sweet Seymour Skinner’s Baadasssss Song”, horse meat was a secret ingredient in school lunches. In 2013, several beef products test positive for horse meat.
  • In 1994 Season 6 Episode 8: Lisa on Ice, they predicted auto-correct texting fails, which as everyone knows is pretty common today.
  • In 1993 Siegfried and Roy tiger attack, Season 5, Episode 10: “$pringfield”, in 2003 it happened.
  • In 1995 Season 6 Episode 19: “Lisa’s Wedding”, they predicted that in the future people would be able to have something in their hand that would let them talk to people face-to-face. 2005 we have video calling software and apps, such as FaceTime.
  • One of the more crazy predictions is the Higgs-Boson particle discovery. Season 10 Episode 2: “The Wizard of Evergreen Terrace” in 1998 came true in 2012. Homer writes the equation that ACTUALLY predicts the mass of a Higgs-Boson that is very close to the true mass that was discovered over a decade later! This particle known as the “God Particle”, which explains why the building blocks of the universe have mass, was theorized by Peter Higgs in 1964. In 2013 the large hadron collider was able to finally test and find proof of a similar particle in 2013.

There are many other events that they have predicted accurately as well, but we have to say the Higgs-Boson particle, for us, just has to take the cake! Something so scientifically significant that has been theorized and explored since the 1960’s was nearly accurately predicted on a cartoon and was later finally discovered 14 years after the episode aired! It cost over $13 Billion to make the discovery of a particle similar enough to be considered the Higgs-Boson, and yet a cartoon came pretty close to predicting not only that it would be discovered, but nearly accurately predicting its’ mass!! That just blows our mind!

One of the more well known predictions to this day currently, is the fact that they predicted that Donald Trump would become president of the United States. They predicted pretty closely what he would be wearing, the escalator he would use, and how he would wave and in what direction.

A few more accurate prediction they made are:

  • NSA spying on people 6 years before information came out that they were indeed tapping phones and internet records.
  • In 1997 Season 9 Episode 3: “Lisa’s Sax”, they predicted the Ebola outbreak that actually happened in 2014.
  • FIFA’s corruption scandal prediction in 2014 came true in 2015.
  • Greece debt default prediction in 2012 came true in 2015.
  • They predicted a Nobel Prize winner 6 years before that person was nominated and received the Nobel Prize. This one is a little easier to predict based on some work they were doing that would potentially be recognized.
  • Same can be said for the Lady Gaga Super Bowl prediction. Who is to say that Lady Gaga wasn’t aware that they made an episode about her and therefore decided to do it in real life not just on a cartoon.
  • In 1998 they predicted that Disney would buy Fox, which happened in 2018.
  • In 2010 it shows Sweden and the United States in the Olympic final in curling and the United States winning. In the 2018 Winter Olympics featured the exact match up and result as the United States won gold.

There are a few college campuses across the United States that actually offers classes about the Simpsons. They have predicted so many things so accurately that they now have classes about theories as to how they have been able to accomplish such a feat. There are also other classes based on the show to emphasis various political and ethical points that the show has brought to light.

There is also the theory of large numbers. You can make a ton of predictions and eventually one of them will come true. Anything is possible at a number. Whether that number is attainable or not is another topic, but eventually anything can be possible. Therefore the theory is that with enough luck and many predictions, they can make accurate predictions that will come true. Some predictions such as technology advances can be a calculated educated guess based on where science is going. Therefore some of these predictions can be more likely to become reality than others.

There is an actual theory that the creator of the Simpsons, Matt Groening, is a high ranking Freemason. With his rank as a Freemason he is giving hints and nods to his all powerful colleagues in the Freemasons with his show. Shameless plug, go listen to our episode about the Freemasons, and find out why this theory doesn’t hold. Also second shameless plug, go listen after that to our episode on the Skull and Bones! They actually do have tons of members in places of power and wealth. Therefore maybe Matt Groening is a member of the Skull and Bones. Ryan makes a theory that the Simpsons is actually a portrayal of the actual Skull and Bones and what they can control.
