If you are like me, I bet you have thought hard about what it means to love. True love is permeated with the absolute Truth of God. It is not like this new worldly love which expects affirmation for every action and choice, even if the person's decisions have led them to evil and death and they are visibly eroding themselves physically, emotionally, and spiritually. His transcendent love is courageous and made available to everyone through the sacrifice at the cross. Though his time was centuries before Christ, David knew of God's authentic love because of his intimacy with Yahweh. As a man after God's own heart, he knew it was his duty to show the world a better way, to love his enemies mercifully and display for them what it meant to look like, sound like, and smell like God in every way. He was put in place to be a beacon of light in the pervading darkness, as are any who have aligned themselves with God in Christ. May we never forget this calling.
