They go on to suggest that buildings should be designed with this reality in mind. While many structures in the mass education system were built long ago and thus must be forgiven their outdated design, the prevalence of schools which look oddly similar to prisons provides a certain level of explanation for the behavior of many students, and more importantly suggests some changes in design which might improve the learning environment(Martins and Gaudiot, 2012).
