さて、漢字の「気」についてシリーズでお送りしています。We are taking a dive at the kanji character “ki” in a series.

前回は漢字の「気」が表す意味を大きく５つに分けてみました。In the previous episode, I divided into 5 categories for meanings of the kanji “ki”.

今回はエネルギーを表す熟語、「元気」と「病気」に注目したいと思います。In this episode, I’d like to focus on the words “genki,” energetic and “byouki,” ill.

元気は気が元に戻ると書いて「元気」です。“Genki” consists of the words, “gen,” origin, and “ki,” energy.

「元気」という言葉は、私たちの元の状態は「元気」であることを教えてくれます。The word gives you an idea that our original state is well and energetic.

一方で、病気は気が病にかかって「病気」と書きます。On the other hand, the word “byouki,” ill consists of the words, “byo,” ill, and “ki,” energy.

「病は気から。」と言いますが、健康状態は気の持ちようで変わると言われます。There is even an expression, which goes 「病は気から。」, which means illness arises from sickness of the spirit.

「元気」と「病気」を使った例文で練習しましょう。Here are some useful sentences you can practice using “genki” and “bryoki.”

「お元気ですか。」How are you?「病気にならないように、よく食べて、よく寝てください。」Please eat well and sleep well to stay away from any illness.
