皆さんこんにちは。3分日本語のお時間です。
Hello Podcast listeners. Welcome back to 3-minute Japanese. As I announced in the previous episode, I’m doing a series about Onomatopoeia. Please check out my previous episode if you haven’t already.
さて、前回お知らせした通り、シリーズに渡ってオノマトペをテーマにしてお送りしていきたいと思います。前回のエピソードをまだお聞きでいない方は、ぜひチェックしてください。では、今回のオノマトペは「ドキドキ」です。
The word of this episode is 「ドキドキ」. 「ドキドキ」 is the sound of heartbeats.
「胸がドキドキする。」means “My heart is pounding.”
例文を使っていきましょう。
Let’s use an example.
「彼に見つめられて、ドキドキした。」
“My heart skipped when he looked at me in the eye.”
「この前、最新のホラー映画を観て、久しぶりにドキドキした。」
“I watched the latest horror film the other day. I haven’t felt this anxious and thrilled for a long time.”
As you can see here, 「ドキドキ」can be used to express excitement or anxiety. I’d like to introduce 2 more onomatopoeia words, which are 「わくわく」and 「はらはら」.
「ワクワク」expresses excitement.
「ハラハラ」expresses anxiety.
Let’s look at examples:
「明日の遠足のことを考えると、ワクワクして眠れない。」
“When I think of tomorrow’s school trip, I’m so excited that I can hardly sleep.”
「このスリラー小説は、最終章にどんでん返しがあって、最後までドキドキさせられた。」
“This thriller novel has a big twist in the last chapter. It was a nail-biting experience until the end.”
Now, you can actually combine 2 onomatopoeia words such as 「ドキドキわくわく」and 「はらはらドキドキ」
Here are the examples:
「私の息子の運転を見るとはらはらドキドキする。」
“Watching my son drive gives me anxiety.”
「明日、3年ぶりに日本に帰れると思うとドキドキわくわくする。」
“My heart is filled with joy and excitement from thinking that I can finally go back to Japan for the first time in 3 years.”
In closing, I would like to talk about the word 「ときめく」. There is a brilliant English translation of this word, which is “spark-joy.” I’m pretty convinced that the translation was coined by the Japanese organizing guru, Marie Kondo.
「ときめく」とは、喜びや期待などで胸がドキドキすること。心が躍ること。
「ときめく」means your heart is skipping feeling joy and anticipation. 「ときめく」 is a verb form and 「ときめき」is a noun form.
「最近、何でときめきましたか。」
“What has sparked joy in your life lately?”
In the next episode, I’d like to introduce more onomatopoeia words that express feelings and emotions.
次回のエピソードは感情を表すオノマトペを紹介していきたいと思います。
はい、今日はこれまで。Okay, that’s it for today. Thanks for listening.
ご静聴ありがとうございます。また次回まで、さよなら。
