The only thing that Dallas needs to trade

0:02

is a new nickname for him. That

0:06

is a terrible nickname, Stank. Just

0:09

terrible. His name is Stank-Oven. I don't

0:11

know. It's still bad. Welcome

0:16

once again to 32 Thoughts, the podcast. Boy, do we

0:18

have a lot to talk about today. Presented

0:21

as always by the GMC Sierra, along with you,

0:23

yours truly, along with Elliot Friedman and

0:26

Dom Schramati. Elliot, let me frame this

0:28

Elias Pettersson in one very

0:30

specific way, and that is power. So

0:34

fighting out of the blue corner, Elias

0:37

Pettersson, who going back to

0:39

your infamous interview on the boat in

0:41

Stockholm, isn't sure whether he's

0:44

ready to sign and he's happy to

0:46

take his time. Power

0:48

move. And fighting out of the

0:50

red corner, the Vancouver Canucks, who

0:53

are frustrated with this, want this

0:55

to come to a conclusion. And

0:58

if it doesn't, they're engaged

1:00

in a conversation with the

1:02

Carolina Hurricanes to trade Elias

1:04

Pettersson. Power move.

1:07

Are we looking at a clash of two

1:09

power moves here? One from

1:12

Pettersson, one from Vancouver. That's

1:15

quite an analogy. It's been a long day.

1:18

I had a good laugh while you were doing that.

1:21

Look, I think it's, I don't think

1:23

it's quite like that. This isn't the

1:25

octagon, I don't think. But

1:28

what I do think, what

1:31

I do think is that, look, it's, it's

1:33

the rights of the player and what the

1:35

team thinks is best for it. And

1:38

look, like Pettersson is

1:41

perfectly within his right to say, look, I'm

1:43

not ready to sign yet as,

1:45

you know, I've negotiated contracts myself.

1:47

I've been in those kinds of

1:50

situations. There's times I

1:52

want to do it and, you know, the front

1:54

office or management says, yeah, Elliot, we're not ready

1:56

yet. And there's times they want to do it

1:58

and I'm not ready yet. yet. Anyone who's

2:00

ever negotiated a contract has been in that

2:03

kind of position. Patterson is

2:05

well within his right to say,

2:07

I'm not ready for this yet.

2:10

Then there is the organization and

2:13

what it thinks is best for

2:15

it. And Nick Ciprios

2:17

made a really good analogy on

2:19

Thursday night in our Arizona, Toronto

2:21

pregame. He brought up the name

2:23

Matthew Kachuk. And if you'll

2:25

remember a couple of years ago, Kachuk went into the

2:28

summer with the flames and said, look, I'm

2:30

going to play out my last year, but I'm

2:32

not signing. And what happens from here on in

2:35

is up to you. Patterson

2:38

is contract is up, but

2:41

he has another year as restricted free agent before

2:43

he becomes a UFA. And

2:45

I got

2:47

to think that on some level, the

2:50

Vancouver Canucks are looking at what

2:52

happened to the Calgary flames

2:55

one province over. And

2:57

look, he's a great player. They're a

2:59

real good team. They could win the

3:02

Stanley cup this year. And

3:04

I think some of it is

3:06

the noise. I

3:08

don't think there's any doubt on

3:11

that. Uh, Patterson admitted to

3:13

Ian McIntyre in a really good article

3:15

on sportsnet.ca that the

3:17

noise was bothering him a little bit. I mean, how

3:20

can you not be human? Rick

3:22

Tocket has talked

3:25

about, he feels that the noise is

3:27

affecting him. I believe

3:29

that the Canucks management feels

3:31

that way too. And

3:34

they want to know what their

3:37

situation is going to be, not

3:40

only this year, but into the future.

3:42

So I think that's kind of why we

3:44

are, where

3:47

we are right now is

3:50

Vancouver, the

3:52

right of the individual is

3:54

Patterson saying, I'm not ready. But

3:57

what the team is saying is we. can't

4:00

wait any longer. We

4:02

need to know the answer. Now,

4:05

the talks with Carolina, those

4:08

were legit. Carolina made an

4:10

offer. I don't

4:12

know what it was, but

4:14

at the very least it made Vancouver

4:16

think. Now, I had people

4:18

who said to me, there's no way that Jim

4:21

Rutherford was going to do it. They

4:23

didn't think there was anything that

4:25

Carolina could offer that would

4:27

allow Jim Rutherford's team to be as

4:30

good this year as it is with

4:32

Pederson on it. And that's totally fine.

4:34

I understand that opinion. I don't

4:37

know 100% that Rutherford would have made

4:39

the trade either, but at the

4:41

very least he brought it

4:43

to the table and

4:45

said, if

4:49

you're not going to give us an answer,

4:51

this is something we're going to consider. And

4:54

I think in that moment, and Pederson had

4:56

made it clear he wanted to punt this

4:58

to the summer, I'm just, like

5:00

I've been on the other end too. You talk

5:02

about negotiating contracts. I've been on the other end

5:05

before of pressure tactics. You

5:07

have to decide pretty quickly,

5:12

do you buy what's being told to you? Is

5:14

it a tactic? How

5:18

do you feel about it? How quick do

5:20

you need to make a decision? All of

5:22

that stuff. Anyone who's been part of a

5:24

negotiation understands it. And I

5:26

think in the moment, Pederson said,

5:29

okay, this is possible. And he

5:31

did, I think he did

5:33

agree that the pressure and the

5:36

intensity has been really hard. He

5:38

said, talk to my agents.

5:41

I give you permission to talk to my agents. Now

5:44

I think on and off they've been

5:46

doing that already, but

5:49

now they've got a serious attempt

5:52

to get it done. There's

5:54

a couple things that happen at this point. There

5:57

are some people who are optimistic. that

6:00

will get there. You

6:04

know, there's a few people who said just don't

6:08

jump too far ahead. There's a process that

6:11

has to happen here. But

6:16

there is some optimism. The

6:19

other thing here though, I wonder about is

6:21

what's the contract gonna look like? Like I

6:23

don't think the Canucks are afraid to pay

6:25

this guy. I think they've

6:27

made that very clear. I don't

6:29

know what the term is gonna be. One of

6:32

the things you learn about CAA,

6:35

which is JP Berry and Pat

6:39

Prison here, is if you look at

6:41

a couple of the other recent deals and one of

6:43

the ones I remember is Owen Power, one

6:46

of the reasons that got done was they

6:48

moved it from an eight-year Buffalo offer to

6:50

a seven so he could sign

6:53

his next deal when he was 29. Now,

6:56

I don't think we're talking about that here. Pat

6:58

Prison is gonna be 26 later in the year,

7:00

but I wouldn't be surprised if

7:03

they at least investigate what

7:05

kind of length of term could we sign here

7:07

where he

7:10

could sign one more big contract. So

7:12

I have wondered if we could be talking

7:14

about somewhere in

7:16

the five to six year range. I

7:19

don't know, but I think

7:21

it's possible all of these things are

7:23

gonna be investigated. Sorry, Jeff, before we

7:25

move on here, I would

7:28

just like to say a couple things

7:30

about Thursday night's loss to LA. Number

7:32

one, I think Pat Prison

7:34

deserves a lot of credit for showing up

7:36

to meet the media. It

7:38

would have been very easy for him to take

7:41

that night off. Instead, he

7:43

goes out there, he stands up with

7:45

his teammates talking about the rough loss.

7:48

He does clarify, says he is only gonna

7:50

talk about the game and won't talk about

7:52

anything else, but it would have

7:54

been easy for him to hide. I think

7:56

in the moment, that was a big

7:59

message to his team. teammates and

8:01

everyone that he was going to be just as

8:03

accountable as everyone else. I thought that was very,

8:06

very important in the middle of all of this.

8:09

Number two, it's not going

8:11

well for the Canucks right now, but

8:14

again, I'm not going

8:16

to panic about this team. I

8:18

think they were due a

8:20

streak, a bad one. They hadn't had one all

8:22

year. They're in it now. But

8:25

I just think that they have to

8:27

get through the next seven

8:30

days. It's not easy.

8:32

It seems like forever. I think

8:34

it's grinding that team, the organization

8:36

and the fan base. Obviously, I

8:39

think they just have to get through

8:42

the next seven days and

8:44

everything will settle. It's

8:48

like I said, it's, it's going to seem like 700

8:50

years, not seven days till

8:52

we get there, but I

8:54

think once they get through that

8:56

and everything settles, I

8:58

think they're going to be fine. Are you, are

9:01

you surprised at all that this, that the, the

9:03

Vancouver Canucks went this route? I

9:05

mean, all season long, it seems as if

9:08

the idea was that, you know, there

9:10

was a bag of gold waiting for

9:13

Elias Pedersen when he was ready. And

9:15

then all of a sudden there's

9:17

this pivot, like, and I don't know if

9:20

this is true or not, but if Elias

9:22

Pedersen has his backup about this, I would

9:25

understand because it seemed

9:27

as if the entire season, it

9:29

was going to march towards this

9:31

inevitability at some point, probably

9:34

after the season into the off

9:36

season, and then something just changed.

9:40

Snap. Do you,

9:42

are you a little bit surprised at

9:44

least that Vancouver went this tactic? That

9:47

we have a trade and if you're not going to

9:49

sign, we need to, we need to explore this. No,

9:56

I'm, I'm not

9:59

surprised. I've been around long

10:01

enough to know that these things

10:03

happen. Look, again,

10:06

I think the Canucks feel that

10:09

they've got to know. I

10:11

think everybody, like to be honest, Jeff, like I

10:13

don't like talking about this. It's the same thing

10:16

I said about Calgary. Like after a while you're

10:18

like, I'd really like to move on to

10:20

the next story and we don't have to talk about this anymore.

10:24

I just think the Canucks have decided they need to

10:26

know the answer. And

10:28

they're trying to do what they can to

10:31

get the answer. I had

10:33

some people say, is Pettersson gonna be

10:36

upset at them for this? Are

10:40

there gonna be hurt feelings? I

10:42

don't wanna speak for Pettersson, that's up

10:44

for him to decide. But

10:50

there's a lot of people who kinda listen to

10:52

these kinds of things and say, that's

10:55

what happens in the real world. These

10:57

kinds of conversations happen all the time.

10:59

People try to pin down

11:01

their leverage or use their

11:04

leverage. And I just

11:06

think, Jeff, it's usually

11:10

a lot of these negotiations. Everybody

11:14

kinda knows where everybody stands.

11:17

I think players know when a

11:19

team wants them. And I think

11:21

teams know when a player wants

11:24

or doesn't wanna be there. I

11:27

think in this particular case, the

11:31

Canucks want more

11:33

clarity. Pettersson

11:39

is a really interesting guy in

11:42

the sense that he's

11:44

very good at keeping a

11:46

lot of his feelings to himself. I

11:49

think a lot of people, I understand

11:51

that when the news got out

11:53

that he was considering extending, I

11:56

think some of his teammates were really surprised.

11:59

Cuz it's not what expected. So

12:02

if the players feel that way, then

12:07

how does the management feel? And

12:09

I just think they want... what's

12:11

what someone said to me? This one's unique in

12:14

the sense that generally

12:17

people have a good feel for

12:20

where everybody stands by

12:22

this point in the season.

12:25

And the other thing too is Jeff, like we've

12:27

been talking about Philly and Seeler

12:29

and Walker, that's a negotiation. This

12:33

hasn't even really been a

12:35

negotiation because Pederson's wanted to

12:37

wait, which makes this even

12:39

more unique. Yeah, I keep

12:41

coming back to the word risky on this

12:44

one by this move. Like listen, again, like

12:46

this is well within Vancouver's rights to do

12:48

this, just like it's well within, as you've

12:51

mentioned, Elias Pederson's rights not to sign

12:53

until he sees fit to sign. I

12:58

just wonder about... because again,

13:00

like I don't know Elias

13:02

Pederson. I wasn't there on

13:04

the boat in Stockholm with

13:06

Elias Pederson. It's not like

13:08

he's telling me everything that's going on

13:13

through this too. All I'm saying

13:15

is, it just... and again, Brothersford's

13:17

been through this a million times,

13:20

but to me the whole thing just seems, I

13:22

don't know, it just seems a little bit risky.

13:24

But then again, when you force a decision, there's

13:26

gonna be some risk attached to it, I suppose.

13:29

Yeah, I mean, look like, I

13:33

mean, Jeff, you like, I always try to

13:36

put myself in everybody's shoes. I

13:41

have always believed that

13:44

as tough as negotiations are,

13:47

if you make the decision to stay, you

13:50

move past it. So

13:53

if it continues to go in this direction

13:56

and, Peter, you reach a point

13:58

where you say, if I'm gonna take the money,

14:00

you have to close the book and you have to move

14:02

on and do what you do

14:05

for that team.

14:08

And I have no doubt that Pederson

14:11

will play, if he signs, he's

14:13

going to play really hard for the Canucks and he's

14:15

going to do great things for them. I

14:18

think that's, you know, people say,

14:20

well, is he going to remember that in

14:22

five years or is he going to remember

14:24

that in eight years? If

14:27

you take the money, my rule has

14:29

always been, hey, I could have

14:31

said no and I could have walked and I took the

14:33

money. Time to move on. Okay.

14:37

Speaking of moving on, we'll move on to

14:39

a couple of defenseman stories here. And before

14:41

we get to Chris Tannev, as we're recording

14:43

this podcast, Ilya Labushkin is now a member,

14:46

once again, Elliot, of the

14:48

Toronto Maple Leafs to deal

14:50

with Anaheim that Brad Forliving, Pat Rubeek

14:52

had been working on before the game

14:55

against the Arizona Coyotes. And

14:57

we'll get to the Mark Giordano injury here in

15:00

a couple of seconds. Well, I think you have

15:02

to kind of mention it right away because, yeah,

15:04

they were talking, but all of a sudden it

15:07

intensified. Yeah. You know,

15:09

Giordano gets hurt. And first of all, you want

15:11

to wish the best to Mark Giordano. You

15:14

know, that was a really heavy collision

15:17

into the boards and you

15:19

just hope that that's not going to be a

15:21

long-term thing. They said he had injury after the

15:24

game. They didn't know. Just wishing him

15:26

the best and hope he's going to be okay. He's

15:28

gone through a lot lately. Yeah.

15:32

And while it wasn't directly as

15:34

a result of the injury, there's

15:36

no question that that exacerbated things.

15:40

They were looking for a right-hand shot

15:42

anyway. They know Lebowski and Carolina,

15:44

by the way, gets a sixth for

15:49

being the partner to three-way do

15:52

it. As. A matter of fact,

15:55

he comes in now Lebowski at below

15:57

the NHL average. He's just under $700,000.

16:00

Thousand dollars. So bratcher living It's little bit

16:02

of a little bit of work done there.

16:04

There still are room for moves from the

16:06

front of me police and we'll see what

16:08

happens before next Friday or somebody or I

16:11

got a going to Tucson like I'm I'm

16:13

wondering about like date. They were looking at

16:15

a lotta right side d you know they

16:17

were looking at. David survived. I think

16:19

bites that's an easy were easy one for

16:22

Montreal in the sense that they can just

16:24

kinda sit there and and and wait and

16:26

say you have to come dawson make us

16:28

do it So he got to Korea where

16:30

it. Is. That you've got one thing

16:32

or years got one more year I said.

16:35

I heard Nick Johnson was kind of a

16:37

name that they were looking at. Your one

16:39

other guy I've wondered for Toronto that would

16:41

make any sense for them is a guy

16:43

like a Mariel Ferraro. I.

16:45

Just because in always a guy san

16:48

a lot to movies a local guy

16:50

and I am. but you know he's

16:52

a left hand shot and they've got

16:54

a lot of left hand shots. I

16:56

think the priority right now was right.

16:58

he votes, yours is. I was kind

17:00

of looking around. that was another name

17:02

that are kind of stood out to

17:05

me, but I think Ferraro could fit

17:07

in a lot of places. so you're

17:09

right, they still have room to do

17:11

some other things, but those were definitely

17:13

some names that they were. They were.

17:15

Kind to look at Now there's a lot

17:17

of pupils. Number one righty Trade Targets was

17:19

off the board and that's Christian of and

17:21

let's get there and it almost seems as

17:23

if this and now the deal tan of

17:26

is gone and the bush in is gone.

17:28

Am going to ask your forgiveness Year run

17:30

on defense in here but first a Christian

17:32

of them member the Dallas stars and the

17:34

primary going back or to brush to cough

17:36

have a hard hitting ah Russian defense in

17:38

I saw him play a little bit with

17:40

the hamilton help them when will you say

17:42

exhibits I like on but then I like

17:44

defense in the leave a bruise. And that's

17:46

what he does. a key block shots. he hits

17:48

hard. He's I can give you much our fans.

17:51

as one oz one scared said to me

17:54

as a little bit of do this and

17:56

i'm and and that's true i big east

17:58

half you know i am I

18:00

talked to Jay McKee about him and you

18:02

know, Jay, Jay McKee loved him. He's like

18:05

the coach's dream. The guy that stays out

18:07

after practice for a long time,

18:09

the last guy to get out of the gym,

18:11

like to do anything to get to the NHL

18:13

guy. Like I think the Flames are going to

18:15

like him, like not for the same reason. They're

18:18

going to like, you know, Hunter Brastevich was a

18:20

completely different player and that's the defense when they

18:22

got from the kitchen Rangers in the Lin home

18:24

deal, but he's not hard hitting physical

18:27

defenseman. Look, he's young. He's

18:29

a couple of years away as well,

18:32

but he sort of fits the mold

18:34

of, I think, what Calgary likes on

18:36

the back end. You know, they have

18:38

agility, they have mobility. Now they need

18:40

a little bit of hostility and they

18:43

get that with, with this defenseman Artem

18:45

Krasnikov. So that's my nickel and dime

18:47

thoughts there on, on that defenseman. But

18:49

what did you, like, I'm curious about

18:52

the timing, the, um, what Calgary got

18:54

in exchange, uh, anything around

18:56

the tan of Dallas deal catch you

18:58

by surprise. Not so

19:00

much by surprise. I mean, I think people

19:02

figured Dallas was going to be the team,

19:05

uh, for a little bit of time. I

19:08

just believe that if Tana was going to

19:10

end up in Edmonton or Toronto or Vancouver,

19:13

they were going to have to pay more. You know,

19:15

they were going to have to really

19:17

blow Calgary socks off. That

19:20

was really going to have to happen, uh,

19:22

for, for one of those three teams to

19:25

get it, you know,

19:27

Dallas made it very clear that

19:29

their top three prospects, Stankovin and

19:32

Maverick bork and, uh, Bischal

19:35

were not going to be involved.

19:38

So they Calgary went down to, um, I,

19:40

you know, the, the funny thing about this

19:42

player is I keep getting him

19:44

confused with Dennis Grabeshkov every time I hear

19:47

his name, I think of Dan. I

19:50

don't know why, but it's just,

19:52

it's getting into my head. Um,

19:56

so I wasn't surprised he ended up

19:58

there. Dallas didn't want

20:01

to do a first-rounder for a

20:03

rental. One of

20:05

the things that really changed here, Jeff, is

20:07

that remember a couple years

20:09

ago they changed the CBA so

20:12

that no longer were draft picks on

20:14

a condition of a player signing. This

20:17

is one case to me where

20:19

you could have seen a situation where

20:21

Calgary would have said to Dallas,

20:25

second-rounder but a first, if you re-sign

20:27

them. But you can't do

20:29

that anymore. I think Dallas will

20:31

try to re-sign them. I just don't know what the

20:34

possibility of it is. I think Tanner's market

20:36

is going to be pretty robust in

20:38

the off-season. But

20:41

it's interesting. They basically got two

20:43

seconds because he was a

20:46

second-round pick and was

20:48

having this debate with a few people today. What's

20:51

better? Was it the first or two

20:54

seconds? There

20:56

were people who felt the first is always

20:58

better because your odds are better. But

21:01

one of the things that you and

21:03

Jason Bukula and Kazantino have talked about

21:06

is that after about 20 this year, and

21:08

the stars could pick really late, especially now

21:10

that they have TANF, the draft

21:12

really drops. There

21:17

was a lot of debate about the prospect, which

21:20

you talked about here. I'll be the first to

21:22

admit I am not an expert on this. I don't

21:24

like commenting on these guys. I

21:26

simply don't know them. What

21:30

someone said to me, and this is

21:32

a manager, he said, if you believe

21:35

that this player is better

21:37

than what you're going to get in the late

21:39

first round this year, then you make the deal.

21:43

But the one thing that a few people said to

21:46

me is, he's still pretty green and

21:49

he needs more

21:52

time in the AHL, And

21:54

the worst thing that the Flames can

21:56

do is rush him. Forget

22:00

sometimes you feel the need to

22:02

show Hey this is how good

22:04

this guy is. And.

22:06

We have to show I'm off to our

22:09

fans. I had a few people say to

22:11

me that that is what Calgary as to

22:13

avoid. Don't rush him, let him get his

22:15

a gel time and and just one of

22:18

the thing about ten of in the flames

22:20

Jeff. I think Calgary tried

22:22

to sign. I'm very late in this

22:24

process. I can't give you the exact

22:26

time, but I think Calgary try to

22:29

extend them and unfortunately by then I

22:31

think ten of was just like it's

22:33

been too long. It's time and I

22:35

think this will be a great thing

22:37

for him to chase the Stanley Cup

22:39

and see where he ends up in

22:42

the summer. But I do think Calorie

22:44

Made one last attempt to sign him

22:46

with the Out with the Dallas Stars

22:48

specifically. You know we make a lot

22:50

about this. Team. And

22:53

the two thousand and Seventeen draft the

22:56

one that you know shot new energy

22:58

into the Dallas Stars Nats and they

23:00

grab he's can in. that's when they

23:02

grab Ot and that's when they grabbed

23:05

ah Jason Robards and just like a

23:07

spectacular draft That sad That said this

23:09

team up for a long time. But

23:13

with this one, I can't help

23:15

but thinking about Twenty Twenty One.

23:18

So in the Twenty Twenty One

23:20

draft. The. Dallas Stars flipped first

23:22

rounders. get his research talking about. You

23:24

know what's more valuable our first round

23:26

pick or two seconds etc. So they

23:29

flip first rounders with the Detroit Red

23:31

Gay. So fifteen and twenty three flipped

23:33

Detroit and fifteen. Take Sebastian closer. Now

23:35

this what is in that mind that

23:38

was when he buys him in had

23:40

like you member alliot know goalies and

23:42

other gave and said on this podcast

23:44

with you and you get these thicker

23:47

that me he should use every single

23:49

pick on a goaltender because or. Know

23:51

cause headers in the Detroit Redwings

23:53

system, they grab Cosa at twenty

23:56

third overall. The. Dallas Stars.

23:58

To quite johnston. Home.

24:01

Run Tech and then at Forty

24:04

Seven. In the second round they

24:06

take. Logan. Stanko

24:09

when. One nick later

24:11

they take. Arts.

24:14

I'm Gretchen. Costs. To. The now

24:16

turned into Christian as and if they win

24:18

the Stanley Cup this year and they could

24:20

like they're that good. This is a really

24:23

really good Dallas Stars team. as much as

24:25

a think about two thousand and seventeen the

24:27

final piece. If the Dallas Stars are indeed

24:29

done, who knows. But and of the big

24:32

one. That. Maybe the biggest

24:34

piece here. Trade deadline for the stars.

24:37

All. Started And twenty Twenty One. With.

24:39

The I to draft picks for

24:41

the Detroit Redwings. Yeah, I don't

24:43

disagree with you. I like little

24:45

noise bad you know I love

24:47

that. Gotta stuff out the As:

24:49

consider it. it's the third. Say

24:51

that Asic it's it's a very

24:54

very interesting, very very interesting it's

24:56

feel and now he's got three

24:58

goals. Oh thank all our problems.

25:00

The other surprised there's a there's

25:02

no way we can send him

25:04

down by the effect have situation

25:06

being what it. There

25:09

going to have to figure out some way

25:11

because you're. Ill

25:14

players know who deserves to be their

25:16

coaches know deserves to be there and

25:18

send them down when everybody's healthy. Listen,

25:21

ah you mention those big three are

25:23

a you mentioned more I can you

25:25

mention the So as well like ah

25:28

like don't have never maverick burst number

25:30

one scoring any American Hockey league to

25:32

like there's another one as knocking at

25:34

the door of the Nhl stay coven

25:36

has been a nice I through this

25:38

tweet out on Thursday night you know,

25:40

Matt rampant in New York with the

25:43

Rangers is a new sort of cult

25:45

hero. He's six foot eight. Dallas has

25:47

a five foot eight Koichiro that if

25:49

one's going absolutely berserk about, In Dallas,

25:51

I'm with you. How do you

25:54

send the guy down sans love

25:56

him? He's producing teammates love it.

25:58

It's a great. Story.

26:01

Fantastic story, highest and this guy

26:03

down any. The only thing that

26:05

Dallas needs to trade is a

26:08

new nickname forum. There's

26:10

a terrible nickname states shotwell care of

26:12

this name is staying cove and Ladder

26:15

know it's still bad a stress, just

26:17

awful. I personally I'm sure they'll get

26:19

on that right away. L E A

26:22

Pretty Ah fans can have endeared have

26:24

endured themselves to had already thought not

26:26

Use a heck of a player and

26:28

you know what you like. You like

26:31

an underdog to five foot eight, right?

26:33

People live underdog. Absolutely. What's the ass?

26:35

What's the old saying? A small player

26:37

has to prove that he can play.

26:40

And a big player has to prove that he can't. Discuss.

26:43

Prove that he can play man. Every single

26:45

time that he's out there and he's producing,

26:47

Dallas looks like Dallas is got another shot

26:50

of energy in the shoulder. Him they look

26:52

real good. Ah, and to Embark is not

26:54

far away either. No, not any less. As

26:56

I mentioned the the age and scoring, he's

26:58

right There are that you talked about this

27:00

earlier in what are your blogs like? Somehow

27:02

some way they have to find a way

27:05

to get both these guys in the lineup

27:07

this year. Because. They're the right

27:09

there and the rain and for any shall

27:11

duty. And the other age or

27:13

go to the can't wait to be rid

27:15

of these two guys. ah I'm new off

27:17

the have your eyes on right now does

27:19

me no and of finish though a big

27:21

one that's out there. Had Cray Connery on

27:23

the radio show on Thursday and tried to

27:25

go down here go on a fishing trip

27:27

with him but he was gonna bite at

27:29

all about anything to do with no I

27:32

Hannifin but would you wonder about with sir

27:34

the Big Dion Calgary so. It

27:36

It's clear here that. Your

27:39

Hannaford firstly has some trade

27:41

protection, but. He's

27:43

trying to. Move it

27:45

to where he wants to go, right?

27:47

Like places like Tampa Bay. or

27:50

places he wants to withstand and

27:53

on some level a good it's

27:55

probably a better deal for calgary

27:57

if he gets traded with an

27:59

extension The other thing

28:01

here too is I think their ask is higher

28:03

for Hanifin than it was for TANF. But

28:06

I do

28:09

think that Hanifin

28:11

is trying to work it the best

28:13

way he can. So

28:17

the flames, they're going to have

28:19

to make a decision. Do

28:21

we allow

28:23

Hanifin to talk and

28:26

basically pick where he wants to go? Or

28:29

do we just make the best trade we

28:31

can make and let

28:33

it play where it lies? And

28:35

I think we're still kind of

28:38

in that process. One

28:40

of the other teams I've kind of wondered about here, like

28:42

the Florida teams have gotten a lot of attention. Tampa

28:45

and Florida. I

28:48

think obviously Boston, New

28:50

Jersey. I've wondered

28:52

about Washington if Washington is a player

28:54

in this too. Because

28:56

I think Washington is looking to make some

28:59

changes, but I don't think they really want

29:01

to go to rock bottom. I could

29:03

see Washington having eyes on

29:05

Hanifin. So that to

29:07

me is the question here is does

29:10

Calgary say, all right,

29:13

we're going to cede some control over this? Or

29:16

does Calgary say, we're just

29:18

going to take the best deal as

29:20

long as Hanifin can't block it there? And

29:24

we'll just let it play out that way.

29:28

That's the big question for me. Don't

29:31

look now, Elliot, but

29:33

the Nashville Predators just won seven games in a

29:35

row. Beat the Minnesota

29:38

Wild, 6-1, Roman Yossi with no

29:40

points, UC Saros, 33 saves. Prez

29:45

look really, really good. I

29:49

mentioned this on TV on Wednesday that

29:51

as long as they're in a playoff

29:53

spot, unless they get something that totally,

29:56

to your analogy, knocks

29:58

their socks off. You

30:00

sorrows is not getting traded. No Well,

30:05

you know what I think it is it's You

30:08

know this let's go back the whole

30:10

situation with you two so

30:14

No, no, I'm actually I'm

30:16

actually I'm actually being serious about this because

30:19

I think this plays in Nashville's thinking This

30:21

is after the 9-2 game Yes,

30:24

so you know was as we talked about

30:26

they they could have they had a trip

30:28

to go to you two and the predators

30:30

Cancelled it the organization and

30:32

you know the players publicly have said all

30:34

the right things, but you know, they were

30:36

upset but

30:40

Since then they have been nothing

30:42

but pros Like absolute

30:44

pros they've gone on a tear.

30:47

They're in the playoffs they

30:51

You know like so It's

30:55

like being a parent Jeff if

30:57

you're going to punish Someone

31:00

you have to reward them Like

31:03

that is the thing I thought about Absolutely

31:06

is the predators said okay

31:09

we're not gonna do that, but now

31:12

when the players have responded and

31:15

Even better than you would have hoped that

31:17

they would have responded you have

31:20

to be able to say hey guys like You

31:23

did this for us now

31:25

we've got to do Something

31:28

for you and This

31:30

is what you how you have to pay them back This

31:33

is you have to say look

31:35

guys you've earned this and we're gonna do

31:37

this now I think the one guy who's

31:39

a little bit different and I listened to

31:41

some of Trotts comments is Is

31:43

Tommy Novak if they can't get a deal

31:45

done Trotts

31:48

Kind of because because I think there's a

31:50

there's quite a bit of interest in Novak

31:53

He's a really talented guy and he doesn't

31:55

make a ton of money. He's making 800

31:57

K and. I

32:00

I. I kind of heard it's

32:02

that maybe some non playoff teams

32:04

might be interested in him to

32:07

simply because you can. That.

32:09

That's a guy you could have for

32:12

next year like Novak Zoc wanted be.

32:14

And eight nine, ten million dollar free

32:16

agents. He's probably gonna be somewhere in

32:18

the forests and everybody would like that

32:21

he's a skilled guy to. So I

32:23

I really do think that that's the

32:25

one guy that if they can't sign

32:27

they might move based on what tried

32:30

said, but I think a lot of

32:32

it is. Hey, if if you're going

32:34

to, if you're going to demand better

32:36

from people, you have to reward them.

32:39

When. They do it. Bike is your

32:41

national. Had a lotta guys out there.

32:43

they had Trenton out there, that cari

32:45

out there, that fab road their Novak

32:47

sorrows like dirt data like a girl

32:50

like a week and a half ago.

32:52

Be more like you have to start

32:54

talking about them more. That's the team

32:56

that you have to watch and and

32:58

now like they, they may not do

33:00

very much. So. Those mayor

33:02

of us are going to say that those

33:04

players. They deserve a lot

33:06

of credit because l I'd people

33:09

telling me after we reported that

33:11

they're gonna pack in their season

33:13

and because they're going of their

33:15

so upset and they have not

33:17

done that like that they have

33:19

done the exact opposite like those

33:21

guys are. Pros: Very impressive. Good

33:23

on them are absolutely you don't have any them

33:26

into the game the you worked on Thursday night

33:28

that see Arizona Coyotes and the ah the try

33:30

me beliefs. A couple

33:32

of things very already mention the Marcher

33:34

Daniel injury and yeah sleep. Hope for

33:36

a free speedy recovery. Want good prognosis

33:38

initially I than a speedy recovery with

33:41

their with whatever is happening to the

33:43

to Marks or Down or in the

33:45

and the head injury are but Yosef

33:47

all returns in this one. Ah me

33:49

Please haven't seen this netminder since December.

33:51

Your thoughts on his first game. Boy

33:54

saw you, he won. He was very

33:57

solid if you saw the highlights of

33:59

his American. You again last weekend

34:01

the Lavelle Rocket. They can they should.

34:03

They made life very hard all over.

34:05

I'm an Arizona did to They were

34:07

very aggressive and on top of I'm

34:09

and that's why you need and I

34:11

thought he held up really well. Ice

34:14

is like this. this Toronto situation. it's

34:16

fascinating as we talked about some of

34:18

the d that we think they they

34:20

could be interested in. what they're going

34:22

to do by the other goalies situation

34:24

is fascinating. The was the number one

34:26

when he got hurts. Our Samsonov looked

34:28

like it was done. His recess it

34:31

is is season Martin Jones nobody would

34:33

have imagine he would have been the

34:35

same year before the season he was

34:38

and I really believe that one of

34:40

the reasons Toronto's knockout put him on

34:42

waivers is it seem like Philadelphia to

34:45

meet silly what they do in the

34:47

next week. The one of the biggest

34:49

tells will be what they do and

34:52

goal. They they wave peers and he

34:54

cleared it's ah they they've got Sandstrom

34:56

up by I think they would consider

34:59

like our really. Inexpensive move if they

35:01

really wanted to make the playoffs. Like

35:03

someone said to me, if they make

35:05

an inexpensive move goal but not reading

35:07

a first round or a second rounder

35:09

for a goalie, I don't think, but

35:11

if they could get someone for a

35:14

really low pacts, that would be a

35:16

sign that they're very serious about making

35:18

the playoffs. But I think of Jones

35:20

ended up on waivers like that's the

35:22

kind a team that would claim I'm

35:24

so I think Toronto's gonna hold three.

35:26

I think they're well aware of that's

35:28

and the other thing. In this particular

35:31

game is that. Our home

35:33

Burkett Waivers. he put his seventieth game.

35:35

So Toronto's going to have a bit

35:37

of our roster crimes and the all.

35:40

There's only two guys on the roster

35:42

now nice and Robertson who can go

35:44

down low myers without clearing waiver, sort

35:47

obese to see what kind of roster

35:49

machinations they do. But the biggest thing

35:51

is that wall lox. Ah, very good.

35:54

I thought this first game back. On.

35:57

Wednesday night the St. Louis Blues loss

35:59

to the Edmondson Oilers. They picked up

36:01

a point to the went past six

36:03

the bots. Your. Doug

36:05

Armstrong. Did. That game finally make

36:08

up your mind. The Although: the one

36:10

thing I see Louis the last. while

36:12

there's been times I've seen them, I

36:14

really like them and there's been times

36:16

I've seen them and I'm like oh

36:18

my god I can't believe what I'm

36:20

watching and he holds. The one thing

36:22

is is due to David's and. You

36:25

know there's still a bit of time. Armstrong.

36:27

Has set a high price on him. And.

36:30

I think what's gonna be interesting is if.

36:33

You. Know who's who's gonna pay it. I

36:35

teams are going to think about it

36:37

but are they gonna pay it like

36:39

either? Gudmundsson the team that would consider

36:42

the idea. I

36:44

think I've vegas as a team

36:46

that would consider the idea feel.

36:48

I wonder if teams like. Ill

36:52

Florida and. I

36:54

did Garo lot of would consider

36:56

the idea again. Florida doesn't have

36:58

the draft pick cache but they

37:01

have cap room. A

37:04

All as so. He.

37:06

Ought to me there's all

37:08

these teams are kind of

37:10

in the same area. They

37:12

will that that against teams

37:15

are Edmonton, Vegas, Carolina, Florida,

37:18

In all their definitely there are

37:20

others. And

37:23

I think a lot of those

37:25

teams would be similar. For Boots

37:27

Nave it's to com and then

37:29

depending on who's said doesn't get

37:32

them or says we're not gonna

37:34

be able to afford to get

37:36

them then they kind of move

37:38

on and say okay we're looking

37:40

at the terrorists saying goes in

37:42

and some of the other players

37:45

here so that's. That's

37:47

kind of what we're dealing with at this

37:49

point in time. I think his. Duties

37:52

believe it, Armstrong's price will come

37:54

down. Ordered. Seems just

37:56

realized that if we're gonna acquire

37:58

this player which is good, have

38:00

to pay Doug Armstrong price because

38:02

he's not budging. but there's there's

38:04

no question like him and cancel.

38:07

Are probably the to top wingers available.

38:10

Unless there's somebody I missing out, There

38:12

is always one surprise straight we know

38:14

it. Ah yes, it happens early. Sometimes

38:16

it happens to Fifty Nine Eastern on

38:19

trade deadline day. There's. Always something

38:21

are before your to the Montana thought

38:23

line art the Foreign: the Los Angeles

38:26

Kings I guess the team has been

38:28

no dinged recently with that with injuries.

38:30

ah I'm gather thought I'm what wrote

38:32

was going through Rob Lake's mind these

38:35

days. Well one of the things it

38:37

is I kind of looked around at

38:39

is that you know Arvidson, Campy Anderson

38:42

and grunts from all of whom are

38:44

out. They are not going to miss

38:46

the rest of the season which is

38:49

feel really good news. For them, I

38:51

am I the I don't like to

38:53

see people get injured and missile long

38:55

time so it's really good news for

38:57

all those players. They're expecting them over

38:59

the next month to returns. What it

39:01

means is that cap space is gonna

39:03

be an issue. So unless he's going

39:06

to subtract something in it and I

39:08

think we're all kind of looking at

39:10

it's Matt Roy who's who's a really

39:12

good player. I like my like Matt

39:14

Royal lights another right hand side d

39:16

I probably should be including and a

39:18

lot of these conversations. They're

39:20

they're not going to subtract too much now.

39:23

One thing I do see your colleague was

39:25

a healthy scratch in Vancouver on Thursday nights

39:27

and I and I do think that they

39:30

are low. I've talked about this. they're looking

39:32

for a bit of edge that that's one

39:34

of the things kind of like the King's

39:36

when they're at their best. They were really

39:39

hard team to play against soy and in

39:41

all but one thing to do a job

39:43

is that they're really well structured. A lot

39:46

of really structured teams are pretty hard to

39:48

play against but they don't have. they're not.

39:50

They're not bruising and I think if

39:52

they could add something like that they

39:54

would. It's but the issue is that

39:57

all of those players are coming back

39:59

so they won't. The Cap Room.

40:01

Like Markstone, it is not going

40:03

to play the rest of the

40:05

regular season. Know we'll see about

40:07

the play offs but he's not

40:10

going to play the rest of

40:12

the regular season. The know that

40:14

they have that ability that slot

40:16

to add L A doesn't doesn't

40:18

have that. I think also to

40:21

are just a couple of things

40:23

I wouldn't be surprised if Calgary

40:25

considers adding like an Nhl defenseman

40:27

at a relatively inexpensive price. your.

40:30

Ten of us off the roster.

40:32

That hurts their rosters, They'll I

40:34

I think they were going to

40:36

have an internal conversation about. That's

40:38

something we want to do. Eric

40:40

that supports why I don't know

40:42

about Erik Johnson. By it's

40:44

that kind of things a possibility. I

40:46

wondered about a guy like a all

40:48

the rangers are kind of looking around.

40:50

I wondered of a guy like Club

40:52

Pozo for them. I

40:55

always try to think of Chris Drury

40:57

of Usa Hockey Connections and oppose always

40:59

is a kind a guy like that's.

41:03

Why I like it is

41:05

it's gonna be interesting. Like

41:07

the you said, there's always

41:09

the one big deal that

41:11

comes. I'm still waiting to see

41:13

I'm trying to fish out. I always try

41:16

to sit there and fish out, what's that?

41:18

One big deal I got a

41:20

legal see this some of the

41:22

guys I've wondered about I should

41:24

have mentioned for St. Louis Brandon

41:26

Saad. He's got

41:28

two years remaining. Ah

41:31

so. I

41:34

kind of wonder. The.

41:36

Old. our team's gonna be crazy about

41:38

that second year or not, but he's

41:41

a good playoff player. I should have

41:43

mentioned. Also, with the Blue Scott Pruitt

41:45

of Exceeds Supply, fourteen more games or

41:47

he's gonna be an unrestricted free agent.

41:51

One of those groups six players so

41:53

he's a guy wonder about like just

41:56

unfortunate guys. Been heard. And.

41:59

But. The talented guy does he get.

42:02

A. Situation somewhere else. There's a there's

42:05

a lot of. Kind

42:07

of situations here that I'm and

42:09

the other thing the other team

42:12

I've been thinking about a lot

42:14

is Ottawa and Josh Norris unfortunately

42:16

is gonna be out for a

42:18

while. I think everyone's really sort

42:20

is the year that's I think

42:22

auto would really like to do

42:25

something. Bigger

42:28

than a terrorist sink or Cooper

42:30

League, but I just don't think

42:32

it's gonna be now. I think that

42:34

they're. Your

42:36

teams that talk them they they really

42:38

do sense that are was willing to

42:41

consider something bigger but they're not convinced

42:43

it's gonna be. Now is

42:45

now the right time you know. I wonder

42:47

about Will Will and on this one. Nick

42:51

Schmaltz for the Arizona Coyotes. And.

42:54

The reason I do One really

42:56

good player to. He. Has

42:59

a cap hit that is

43:01

lower than his actual compensation.

43:04

When not really jibe with the

43:06

Arizona Coyotes ah, he has two

43:08

more years left on his deal.

43:10

Ah, Next year's total salaries eight point

43:13

four, the cap in five point eight

43:15

and after that has a point five.

43:17

I wonder because we've we've focused on

43:19

you know, and then the Is only

43:21

carries with a good players like mad

43:23

Dumbo players on expiring contracts. I really

43:26

wonder what they're thinking here with Nick

43:28

Schmaltz. Marathon. That one

43:30

for I heard last year there

43:32

was something really close or there

43:34

that the small was close to

43:36

going somewhere in his the thought

43:38

I was Carolina but. It was.

43:40

Someone told me that I was wrong

43:42

about that. It wasn't them. I've always

43:44

kind of wondered where I was gonna

43:46

be. I think Arizona's Usa guys. The

43:48

soccer. I expect something we've done by.

43:50

Expect something with I don't know about.

43:52

There are. It's. the guys

43:54

are so of contracts your smalls

43:57

i understand why you're mentioning that

44:00

But I haven't heard anything. That

44:02

doesn't mean it's wrong. I just don't

44:04

know. I hadn't heard anything. But

44:06

I just heard it was less likely for some of their

44:09

guys who have

44:11

term. The other thing that they have to

44:13

deal with is, and you can

44:15

tell, they haven't won since the Utah announcement

44:17

came that they were interested in a team.

44:21

There's a lot of people there,

44:23

especially the ones with families. Obviously,

44:25

the employees are very concerned for

44:27

obvious reasons. I think the

44:29

players too, you're sitting there, you're wondering

44:31

about your house, you're wondering about your

44:33

kids. If

44:36

the team moves, do you want to go to the new city?

44:40

There's a lot weighing on those guys, a

44:42

lot. OK,

44:44

on that one step away, Montana's thought

44:46

line after the break. Listen

44:54

to the 32,000 podcast ad free

44:56

on Amazon Music, included with

44:58

Prime. Time

45:04

now once again for the Montana's thought line,

45:06

Montana's barbecue and bar, Canada's home for barbecue,

45:08

Elliot. Try the ribs. 32Thought,

45:11

sportsnet.ca. That's the email address, 1-833-311-3232. We're

45:16

going to start off today with

45:18

a clarification from Anonymous

45:22

Trainer. That is indeed

45:24

your real name. Well, this is pretty good. I think it

45:26

might actually be the real name. This

45:28

person is choosing to remain anonymous for a reason

45:30

that's going to become obvious in two seconds. Hey

45:33

guys, I'd prefer to remain anonymous as I

45:35

answer this, as I've worked as a trainer

45:37

in hockey for many years at multiple levels

45:39

and continue to do so today. To answer,

45:42

this goes back a couple of pods. Nick

45:44

from Grand Rapids question, there are

45:47

many players in pro hockey who

45:49

wear contacts. Most teams will

45:51

have their eye doctor provide extra lenses

45:53

for each player with corrected vision, and

45:55

or the players will give the trainers

45:57

extra sets of their own prescription lenses.

46:00

Each set of contacts is labeled with

46:03

the associated player's name or number, and

46:05

a set is typically kept on the

46:07

bench for games and practices as well

46:09

in the medical rooms. Sometimes contacts randomly

46:12

fall out of the eyes/eyes and they

46:14

need to do a quick replacement on

46:16

the bench. Or sometimes there's other problems

46:19

they can try outs fold up, get

46:21

dirty, etc that required seizing into a

46:23

new pair of contact lenses. Contact solution

46:25

and extra contacts are a common supply

46:28

in the Bench Medical Kids I. Can't

46:30

recall any players wearing goggles or

46:32

glasses and the past fifteen or

46:34

twenty years on the ice, but

46:37

contacts are not uncommon. Mr or

46:39

Mrs anonymous trainer thank you for

46:41

clarification on that one. Soon.

46:43

Okay, very good daggers for users. Here's

46:46

the first question Kelly in if I

46:48

can read this correctly. Moose Jaw the

46:50

statue on a little slap shot pool

46:53

therefore calibers shops. Hey Elliott and Jeff

46:55

Kelly from was just a statue in

46:57

here. Love the pot! Of course I

46:59

was wondering what happens if a referee

47:02

see the penalty happen and puts his

47:04

arm up but either wasn't sure who

47:06

it was in a scrum or maybe

47:08

the play goes on log enough that

47:11

they forget which player committed the infraction.

47:14

What happened? What happens in

47:16

that scenario? I'd never considered

47:18

that before. Well, I've never seen

47:20

the forget one before. That one.

47:23

Of a thats pretty funny, but maybe

47:26

it happens. but I've never. I've never

47:28

known it to happen. That. So

47:30

areas I read so too are

47:32

our friends are good buddy Dave

47:34

Jackson and and ask them this

47:36

one and having no idea what

47:38

would come back So as they

47:41

both funny first he says you

47:43

pointed the bench and in a

47:45

real authoritarian manner you point to

47:47

the penalty box, cross your fingers

47:49

and hope that somebody goes to

47:51

sit down. Us if not the

47:53

accepted procedure has been to call

47:55

the intervene a video goal judge

47:57

and have him assist you with.

48:00

Getting a number of rights, I never

48:02

would have guessed that Elliot's the go

48:04

know, my luggage. Oh, you could do

48:06

that either. Know that? That's that's the

48:09

answer right there. Okay,

48:12

Pounds Sacramento, California, Dom Jeff Elliott can

48:14

a player besides a goalie be credited

48:16

with a save during Kings versus Ducks

48:18

last night one of the many to

48:21

on one Russia's given up by L.

48:23

A. The Ducks took a shot that

48:25

was served by defense been Matt Roy

48:27

who had his thick in the. The

48:29

goaltender Dave Riddick was on his way

48:31

out of position and this shot was

48:33

for sure a goal. If Roy was

48:36

in there to the Ducks get credit

48:38

for a shot and if so who

48:40

gets credit for the save? Riddick,

48:42

Was nowhere near the park in had

48:44

no chance or is is simply a

48:46

blocked shots and the ducks get no

48:48

credit for a shot. Great job on

48:51

the pie. Keep up the great work

48:53

G K G Go Kings Go. Actually,

48:55

just to be honest, Or martyr

48:57

me to save the other night and I meant to

48:59

check. I. Don't know what's the

49:01

answer is considered a block. Some. Players:

49:04

players block shots Goalies make says it's the

49:06

same thing. Isn't just for the

49:08

player we don't call it would be

49:10

how that I'm I'm not sure I

49:13

a like martyr was the save percentage

49:15

leader or maximum. who is the king?

49:17

You mention the other nice favorite favorite

49:19

nobody who made the save. Oh.

49:22

I'm ah, Metroid. Made

49:25

Smarter and Matt Roy or

49:27

the League's Block Shots Leaders

49:29

ads are thousands. That's awesome.

49:31

Ah, Alec that once Ah,

49:33

that's a good question. Daniel.

49:36

From Toronto, he elliot just and of course

49:38

Dom. Thank you for keeping me entertained while

49:40

prepping for a half marathon. I went along

49:42

that like ice ice it you have solid

49:44

how want to get back into that are

49:47

running. Know. Noble Gas does.

49:50

But only like it and okay okay always

49:52

good laugh when just started saying no one

49:55

is listening By this time and I'm almost

49:57

done my run thinking if I wasn't I'd

49:59

mean out. finally be done this damn run.

50:02

But anyways, with the news of Matt

50:04

Murray seeing Poxen returning to the ice,

50:06

I was wondering, if he

50:08

becomes healthy enough to play, are the

50:10

Leafs forced to activate him? Or

50:12

since he has already been cleared for LTIR,

50:15

can they keep him there until they have

50:17

the room and the cap is no longer

50:19

a consideration? Basically, does the

50:21

NHL check in on these cases or

50:24

is it a check once and move on,

50:26

can't wait to try the ribs as soon

50:28

as this damn race is over? I

50:30

would say this, that the league

50:32

is much more careful

50:34

about looking at this than they

50:36

used to. It used to be

50:38

a lot more laissez-faire. Now

50:40

it's much more, we want to

50:42

make certain that a

50:45

player who is healthy to play

50:47

is able to play. And

50:50

we talked about this a little bit at the last pod. Teams

50:53

are accusing a lot of teams a

50:55

lot more often. Oh yeah. About LTIR

50:58

abuse or salary cap cheating

51:01

and the league is much,

51:03

much more on

51:05

top of this than they used to be. I think seven

51:08

or eight years ago, you probably could have gotten

51:10

away with it a bit more. Now

51:13

it's not the case. Now the league is

51:15

on you much, much more

51:18

about dressing guys. Like, you know,

51:20

it's funny, we talked a

51:22

little bit about Shea Weber last podcast

51:24

about how the league really grinded Montreal

51:26

about it when Weber announced

51:28

he wasn't going to play after they went to

51:30

the Stanley Cup final. I remembered

51:32

another situation. There was a couple of years ago

51:34

where the Maple Leafs were down in Florida.

51:38

I couldn't remember if they were playing the Panthers or

51:40

they were playing Tampa Bay. And

51:44

the Leafs were basically going to be

51:46

forced to play short-handed

51:48

or with a called up goalie.

51:50

If I remember correctly, it was

51:53

an ATO goalie. And

51:55

the Leafs were like, if you want us to do this, we'll

51:57

do it. This

52:00

is a game that means a lot for

52:02

someone else who was in the playoff

52:05

race. And we can

52:07

make this work, but the league

52:09

thought Toronto was manipulating LTI. I

52:11

are. And at the end of

52:14

the day, I, the

52:16

league kind of said for

52:18

competitive balance, we're going

52:20

to allow this to happen. But

52:22

they really gave Toronto a rough ride, a

52:26

really rough ride. And I'm told behind the

52:28

scenes that happens a lot more now than

52:30

it used to. Then

52:33

Nikita Kucharov mess it all up with the

52:36

t-shirts. No, this wasn't the

52:38

t-shirts had a lot to do with

52:40

it. And I know in like

52:43

Vegas was cleared by the NHL, but a

52:45

couple years ago, they had a lot of

52:47

crazy stuff that happened and teams

52:50

were screaming about it, but the

52:52

league, like, and the league did

52:54

go through it pretty hard with Vegas. Like they

52:56

gave Vegas a rough ride too. And in the

52:59

end they were in compliance, but

53:01

like people said to me, the

53:03

league pokes at you and dissects

53:05

you a lot more than they used

53:07

to. Thank you

53:10

so much for the email. I'm always fascinated

53:12

that so many people are interested in the minutia

53:14

of the CBA, Elliott, and here's another one.

53:16

Mike in Philadelphia. Good afternoon, guys.

53:19

I have a quick question about

53:21

salary retention and retention slots. If

53:24

a team retains salary on three

53:26

transactions, but one or more

53:28

of the contracts are

53:31

for pending UFAs, when

53:33

are they free to make another retained

53:35

salary transaction? Would it be as soon

53:37

as they hit the off season after

53:39

the cup final, or would they have to

53:41

wait until July 1st? Love

53:43

the pod and the written blogs. Keep up the great

53:46

work. No,

53:48

I think you have to do it at

53:50

the end of the, uh, at the end

53:53

of the calendar. When the contracts expire, which

53:55

is June 30th, July 1st, that's one of

53:57

the reasons Nashville has two

53:59

of their. The hell are a like of

54:01

a lot of cap Room you've talked about

54:03

this save know they've used to have their

54:05

salary slots. You. Know it

54:07

if you if you look at their

54:10

retain salary transactions, they they've done it

54:12

with Ryan Johansen and Mathias at home

54:14

and so and the in a state

54:16

through next year, right so or actually

54:19

echo miss two more years. So naturals

54:21

very careful about retaining salaried else they're

54:23

willing to take a salary. They played

54:26

do a three way because they have

54:28

extra cap space but retained salaries Not

54:30

what they want to do Because as

54:33

you mentioned jeff, they can't clear it

54:35

until June thirtieth. Excellent!

54:37

Ah, another great know. Here's an interesting

54:39

one and it may be you and

54:41

I mused about this one before. This

54:44

is Kim from Sweden highest him from

54:46

Sweden here. Love the podcast. Bummed out

54:48

that I have a hard time trying

54:50

the ribs says a theme ah my

54:52

question. However, With all

54:54

the offside reviews on goals blaze basically

54:57

all of them overturn. Lately as the

54:59

Blackhawks and Bedard San I got to

55:01

thinking about other potential review situations mainly

55:03

dampens at the red line. Feels like

55:06

a lot of players are very close

55:08

to the wrong side of the line

55:10

when dumping the park. Is this something

55:12

that could be reviewed? should result in

55:15

a goal close after a dump and

55:17

to see if the play was an

55:19

icing before the goal. I.

55:21

Think we both wondered about this one.

55:24

Well put it this way: they'll give

55:26

you a little bit of leeway, but

55:28

if you're two or three steps behind,

55:30

you're gonna get called for icing. But

55:32

no, it's not reviewable. I don't

55:35

want to see it be reviewed. To

55:37

be perfectly honest, I the this one.

55:39

You should be able to make that

55:41

call on a bite. One

55:43

of the reasons that you can't review it

55:45

is that undisputed goals the plaza happen in

55:47

the offensive zone. So.

55:49

Because Isaac is not a play that.

55:52

Is in the offensive zone. You.

55:54

Cannot review it. You

55:57

know what to? I'll be honest with you,

55:59

the standard further down been to me should

56:01

be the same standard as the offside. If

56:05

it's agree, just call it. But I'm a close

56:07

enough guy. I'm a club close enough for the

56:09

dump in and I'm close enough for the

56:11

offside he with me or against me I am.

56:14

I am a close enough for the icing. Especially

56:17

now that we're trying to make icing

56:19

a little more safe. I'm

56:21

a close enough guy. The

56:24

offside. Unfortunately, I just. You

56:27

know why Jazz I know everybody says the do

56:29

seen one was really agree just that led to

56:31

the change the rules and while I just know

56:33

the way the world works and if you lose

56:35

the Stanley Cup on a play that's our side

56:38

by the skin of an onion. It's.

56:40

A fiasco. As much as I don't

56:42

like how much we parse it and

56:44

was warned that it would get to

56:46

this, people would go crazy. Who? Whoever,

56:48

whoever told you would get to this

56:50

and in this type of parsing was

56:52

one hundred percent rights. Colin Campbell was

56:55

on. Then that person was one hundred

56:57

percent right. Because Moink gamble was always

56:59

the guy who said be careful what

57:01

you wish for an. Wow.

57:03

We've turned this from a game of inches

57:06

into a game of Pixels. And

57:08

that's what it's for. com.

57:10

And really, the offside rule

57:13

was always in spirit. Close

57:15

enough so as not egregious to just

57:17

try to keep guys as honest as

57:19

possible getting the other own. okay argument,

57:21

Sweden Great note there Okay, I've been

57:24

in the Uk hi Jeff Finale: had

57:26

been from the Uk. Here there's a

57:28

few of Us hockey fans in the

57:30

Uk have been avid Nhl fan since

57:32

the early nineties. anyway, doing my best

57:34

to spread the word to my offspring

57:36

and even my eldest daughter, Willow. had

57:39

to admit she's enjoying the podcast on

57:41

a weekly trips to take her to

57:43

college. Hello Willow! Ah, so much so.

57:45

She came up with a bell thing question.

57:48

Which notable Nhl or the you know

57:50

of started playing hockey the latest in

57:52

life? He was one question I had

57:55

no idea where. as normally I love

57:57

calling audiences before you guys do to

57:59

try. The over my encyclopedic knowledge ha

58:01

ha. Thanks for the Balance insights every

58:04

week. Love the show! The first when

58:06

it comes to mind is Edge over

58:08

Nasty who didn't start until he was

58:11

eleven years old and became the first

58:13

overall draft tick of the Nhl. You

58:15

know of anyone else? Elliott who started

58:18

late in life. I'm

58:21

trying to think job was the one that I

58:24

always go to. That's

58:27

a good question. That

58:29

the ten of brothers had a very

58:31

unique pass. They

58:34

actually stop playing hockey for a

58:37

while and came back. That's

58:39

a Chris through or. Cristero. It was

58:41

the same. Yeah, I'm results Darwin was

58:43

made. Over all. Their. Christer thought played

58:45

football in came by the Anthony his brother

58:47

got him a walk on tryouts with the

58:50

Kings to Fry Max. That. Though he

58:52

got back in. I think lionel con occurs

58:54

and other ones who are not sure how old

58:56

he was when he started by think he started

58:58

li are you know, what are your ego I

59:00

do. I just looked it up. broad line, way.

59:04

Where did he start? Another way.

59:07

He played well in Riyadh. he

59:09

before the I just checked Wikipedia

59:11

which is no away by. A

59:14

He's it was I He played.

59:17

He played Us street hockey until he

59:19

was thirteen. Wow.

59:22

I love rattling way the up just

59:24

to time Rodley North or on Winner!

59:26

Ah yes and one of the rare

59:28

cases of a defensive defenseman L. E

59:31

getting into the Hockey Hall of Fame.

59:33

Yes, as the Hall of Fame is looking

59:36

to correct the mistakes from the past and

59:38

putting in as many goaltenders as possible, Can

59:40

we carve out a little area for the

59:42

defensive defenseman? The defenders that had the nerve

59:44

to actually. I don't know. Elliot's.

59:47

Defend. The

59:50

Iris I misled. That's why the Flames traded

59:52

for this guy to they're looking for guys

59:54

59:56

what's your problem is you know I keep seeing

59:58

this guy and so the guys are some name
