Welcome to the 99 relapses podcast.

0:41

I'm your host, James Egidio, an

0:43

online Christian recovery coach and

0:45

counselor. In today's

0:47

devotional, I'll be talking

0:49

about Overcoming Negative. Self-Talk.

0:52

Negative self-talk can be

0:54

a powerful force in our lives,

0:57

shaping how we view ourselves and the world

0:59

around us. When we constantly

1:01

tell ourselves negative things, we

1:03

start to believe them and they become a self

1:05

fulfilling prophecy. The good news

1:07

is that we can overcome negative self-talk

1:10

and replace it with positive biblical

1:12

affirmations. In doing so,

1:14

we can change the way we view ourselves

1:16

and our circumstances and

1:19

live a more fulfilling life in Christ.

1:22

First it's essential to recognize

1:24

the negative self-talk patterns

1:26

we have. Often we may not even be

1:29

aware of the negative things we tell ourselves,

1:31

as they have become so ingrained in our

1:33

thinking. Take

1:36

some time to reflect on your inner

1:38

dialogue and write down any negative

1:40

thoughts or beliefs. You have about

1:42

yourself. Once you have identified

1:44

these patterns, you can begin to challenge

1:47

them. The Bible teaches us that our

1:49

thoughts have power, and what

1:51

we think in our hearts becomes our reality.

1:54

in the book of Proverbs 23:7.

1:57

It reads. They are always thinking

1:59

about how much it costs.

2:02

Eat and drink, they say, but

2:04

they don't mean it". In this verse,

2:06

this means that we must be intentional

2:08

about the thoughts we allow ourselves

2:11

to dwell on. Instead of focusing on negative

2:13

self-talk we can choose

2:15

to meditate on positive. Biblical

2:18

affirmations. These

2:20

affirmations can come directly from scripture

2:23

or be personalized to fit our specific

2:25

needs. One biblical affirmation

2:27

we can focus on is found in the

2:29

book of Psalms 139:14,

2:33

which says "Thank you for making

2:35

me so wonderfully complex!". Your

2:38

workmanship is marvelous. How

2:40

I know it". This verse

2:42

reminds us that we are created in God's

2:44

image and are fearfully and wonderfully

2:46

made. Instead of telling ourselves

2:48

negative things about our appearance or

2:51

abilities, we can choose the

2:53

focus on the truth that we are valuable

2:55

and unique creations

2:57

of God. Another powerful

2:59

biblical affirmation is found in Philippians

3:02

4:13, which

3:04

reads. For, I can do

3:06

everything through Christ who gives

3:08

me strength". This

3:10

verse reminds us that we are not alone

3:12

in our struggles and that we can find

3:14

strength and courage in Christ. Instead

3:18

of telling ourselves that we are weak or

3:20

incapable, we can choose to focus

3:22

on the truth that we have a source of power

3:24

and strength in Christ. Replacing

3:26

negative self-talk with positive

3:29

biblical affirmations requires intentional

3:32

effort. And practice. We must

3:34

make a conscious effort to challenge

3:36

negative thoughts. And replaced them

3:38

with positive affirmations. This

3:41

may involve writing down affirmations

3:43

and reciting them daily. Or

3:45

it may involve meditating on scripture

3:47

and allowing it to transform our thinking.

3:50

It's also important to surround ourselves with

3:52

positive influences. We

3:54

should seek out community and relationships

3:57

that build us up and encourage us in our

3:59

faith. When we surround

4:01

ourselves with people who speak truth and

4:03

positivity into our lives, it

4:05

becomes easier to adopt a

4:07

positive mindset. In conclusion,

4:10

negative self-talk can be a powerful force

4:12

in our lives. Shaping how

4:14

we view ourselves in the world around

4:16

us. However, as believers,

4:19

we have the power to overcome negative self-talk

4:22

and replace it with positive biblical affirmations.

4:25

By recognizing our negative thinking

4:27

patterns, challenging them,

4:30

and intentionally focusing on positive affirmations.

4:33

We can transform the way we view ourselves

4:35

in our circumstances. Let

4:38

us choose to meditate on the truth,

4:40

found in God's word and live

4:42

a more fulfilling life in Christ.
