Welcome to Visit Bentonville's podcast in

0:12

New American Town . As always , we're coming to

0:14

you from the Hackston Road Studios off

0:16

the bustling Bentonville Square and I'm your host

0:18

, Alan Woody , Joining me in studio

0:21

. Today I have Megan and Tony

0:23

. Megan is with in season here

0:25

in Bentonville and Tony is with

0:27

Blue Moon here in Bentonville . And

0:29

, ladies , you got to be getting jazzed

0:31

up for holidays . This is our time

0:34

to shine , most definitely my

0:36

wife's already got the what

0:38

the , the lifetime movies rolling

0:41

.

0:41

That's hard in the season .

0:43

Yep , yep , I mean we're getting there . So

0:45

tell us a little bit about some of the things coming

0:48

up to each of your prospective businesses . We'll

0:50

start with you , megan .

0:52

Well , we are already hustling

0:54

and bustling this season as

0:56

it gets closer to Thanksgiving

0:58

and then Christmas , and

1:01

we have been just really overrun

1:04

with tourism and which

1:06

is awesome . It's awesome with

1:08

the new exhibit down at Crystal Bridges

1:11

. It has been an incredible experience

1:13

.

1:13

I just went there this week and saw

1:15

that new one , the Annie Leibowitz two . Yes , really

1:18

yes , oh my gosh , amazing

1:20

yes .

1:21

And people from all over the world are

1:23

coming just to see Annie's exhibit

1:25

and it has brought an amazing

1:28

tourist to come

1:30

in and specifically shop for women's

1:32

apparel .

1:33

Nice .

1:34

Gifts . Some

1:36

of our unique

1:38

things that are stored in season

1:41

would be Arkansas food . People

1:43

love to sample that and take home

1:46

back with them , because everyone loves food for gifts

1:48

.

1:48

Yes , food is awesome .

1:50

Ranging from all over the state to

1:52

so from fun fact I eat food

1:54

every day .

1:55

I love that . Did you know that ? Yeah

1:58

, it's true , so I'm a big fan .

2:01

So we're yeah . It's just an exciting time

2:03

to be in retail

2:06

.

2:06

Absolutely , Tony . Tell me a little

2:08

bit about what you got going on at Blue Moon .

2:10

Well , we're very similar . We have women's clothing

2:12

and we also see people from all over

2:14

the country . It's always fun to find out

2:16

where people are visiting us from , and lots

2:19

of mountain bikers and lots of people in town

2:21

for Crystal Bridges and just

2:24

incredible .

2:25

Is that what makes it and we're going to veer from

2:27

the holidays a little bit how exciting

2:30

is it to own , you know , a

2:32

really cool boutique or shop

2:35

in an area like downtown

2:37

Bentonville ? That's just always kind

2:39

of a bustle . It doesn't

2:41

seem like you guys even have to wait for the holidays

2:43

. There's just a new crop of shoppers come in

2:45

about every Sunday or Monday .

2:47

That's true . We get a little bit of a lull in

2:49

January and February and then it picks up mid-March

2:52

and we're busy the rest of the year and

2:54

we literally see people from all over the world . It's

2:56

just really cool to meet people and

2:58

find out where they're from and why they're here and share Bentonville

3:01

with them , and tell them oh , go here , you know

3:03

, go there to the shop or go to this restaurant

3:05

or whatever .

3:06

So I get off topic

3:08

easy . If I go

3:10

in there , what restaurant do you recommend

3:12

to people ?

3:13

Oh gosh , I like this .

3:16

We're going to get difficult here .

3:17

Some of my favorites would be Table Mesa

3:20

Oven and Tap Tusk

3:22

and Trotter .

3:23

You can't lose .

3:23

Peddler's Pub .

3:24

Yes , ma'am , one of my favorites .

3:26

I always tell them you can't go wrong with any of

3:28

the restaurants downtown .

3:29

No I can't ?

3:29

It just depends on what you're hungry for .

3:31

If they've made it down here because it is a very

3:33

competitive restaurant scene , then they're all

3:36

really good . They are really good . They're such a good variety

3:38

.

3:38

There really is . I know I typically

3:41

refer everyone to Barclayda . I just

3:44

love that restaurant I love the owners

3:49

. I think they're amazing . He's a Bentonville native

3:51

.

3:52

Got to talk to him . I had him on the podcast

3:54

a couple months ago . Really

3:57

cool story with those two

3:59

Moving from New York .

4:01

They're wonderful .

4:02

Really amazing stuff . But let's

4:05

talk a little shopping . Let's get how

4:07

is the shopping scene here in downtown

4:09

Bentonville ? And now

4:11

you could spend probably a whole morning

4:13

literally shopping all around the square

4:16

.

4:16

Yes , and the more retail , the

4:18

more shopping , the better I think , agreed

4:20

. I would love to see downtown Bentonville

4:23

be a true shopping

4:25

destination at some point . We

4:27

love all the restaurants and fun

4:30

bars , but the more shops

4:32

that are downtown , the more people

4:34

are likely to come and make it a

4:36

shopping destination .

4:38

Go to Blue .

4:38

Moon . Okay , this , you know , this store

4:41

has X , y and Z . We have this

4:43

and this and this . So I think

4:45

that it's really important . Everyone has their

4:47

own unique taste , which we do because

4:50

we all buy differently , and

4:52

I think that

4:54

just keeping it fresh and just

4:57

different options is really important because

5:00

it reaches a whole

5:02

spectrum of , you

5:04

know , clients .

5:05

Is that an extra challenge for you guys

5:07

in the retail space here ? Because it really

5:09

downtown Bentonville kind of really

5:11

does have almost it's almost like

5:14

a mall , because you've got so many

5:16

great options as far as shopping goes

5:18

and dining goes in the bar scene that you've

5:20

really created its own district

5:22

. But does that make you guys up

5:24

your game competitively to stay

5:26

in the scene ?

5:29

I , you know , a little friendly competition is great

5:31

for everyone . Um , mom and

5:33

I focus on a lot of European brands

5:35

and I tend

5:38

to buy because I , you know

5:40

, kind of have everything . I , okay , what is

5:42

someone who has everything ? What are they

5:45

looking for ? What ? What is something unique

5:47

and new on the market ?

5:48

You sell fishing boats .

5:51

Maybe , hey , I can make that happen .

5:54

Park it outside .

5:56

In season boat broker .

5:58

It could happen , it could be

6:00

a thing .

6:01

And what about you at Blue Moon ?

6:03

Um , I feel like Megan does you know ? She said we , we

6:06

um kind of support each other , we collaborate

6:08

. Yes , there's a competitiveness , but we

6:10

each have our own flavor and so we

6:12

send , like customers say where can I find this , or where

6:14

can I find that and or where else is there to shop

6:16

? I'm always telling them in seasons down here

6:19

, you know , this Southern style is here , go

6:21

, make sure you go next door to remedy road and all

6:23

the different stores and and it's just fun

6:25

to let them know all their different options . And

6:28

uh , and we tend to focus on , um

6:30

, we're kind of like the mid range budget

6:32

price as far as our clothing lines and

6:35

, um , so and very comfortable , casual

6:37

feel . And then , of course , the local

6:39

souvenirs . You know Bentonville t-shirts and and

6:42

gifts and and a lot of razorback staff

6:44

where , oh , you can't lose that , we're very well

6:46

, you can't lose .

6:47

Not this season .

6:48

Yeah , we'll just stick with

6:50

basketball .

6:50

How about that ?

6:51

How about that basketball team ? All right ?

6:53

You can really hit a shot , absolutely , absolutely

6:56

. But yes , we do have a strong razorback

6:58

section with .

7:00

And it is cool and it's different from so

7:02

. I come from a lot of businesses that are

7:04

competitive and very

7:06

exclusive , like when I was in radio

7:08

. We didn't really encourage you to listen

7:10

to other radio stations when you

7:13

know I'm in real estate now , we don't encourage

7:15

you to . You know what use other realtors .

7:17

It'll be great it will . It's a great one

7:19

. Check it all out .

7:21

So it is kind of cool to see a

7:24

cooperative almost because , like

7:26

you said , you don't have everything for

7:28

every person right now and knowing

7:31

the other stores and shops in the

7:33

area kind of make you guys a more powerful network

7:35

.

7:35

Well , absolutely , and if you know everyone

7:37

else succeeds , then we succeed too , and

7:40

that's a really important lesson

7:43

to you know , learn and be

7:45

a part of In what I like to

7:47

call like small , big town . I

7:50

really that really actually works

7:52

.

7:53

It's on the nose really small big town Really

7:55

kind of is , and we're kind of on the vibe

7:58

of your small part of that , whereas if you

8:00

go a little bit to the south

8:02

you get a lot more of big

8:04

town .

8:05

So that's , really cool .

8:07

What makes what is your

8:09

favorite part about the experience

8:11

? When you see we

8:14

all serve locals a little bit different , because they tend to

8:16

know exactly where they're picking and choosing , but

8:19

when you see somebody new to Bentonville or

8:21

a visitor , you know what's kind of the first

8:24

thing that pops into your mind as something

8:26

that you can't wait to share about our home .

8:29

Just how quaint our downtown is , and I , especially , I'll tell

8:32

them you know , you've got to come back at Christmas .

8:34

It's like being in a hallmark movie .

8:36

And whether it's you know marked when

8:38

I'm telling them this or what . But

8:41

but yeah , just how quaint and

8:44

sweet and people are so polite and

8:46

friendly and

8:48

our city does a great job of keeping

8:50

the area clean and looking beautiful

8:52

and year-round it's

8:55

just a beautiful little town .

8:56

It does seem to get better month by month

8:58

. By month it does . It's kind of amazing .

8:59

It does , and

9:02

I believe that most of the people that we've met coming into in season

9:04

are that are moving

9:06

from all over the country . They

9:08

are so genuinely happy

9:10

to be here and I love that

9:13

attitude coming in just

9:15

because I was born and raised here

9:17

, so you know when I was growing

9:19

up .

9:20

Oh wow , you're always get off my lawn

9:22

. I drove through the square .

9:24

I didn't even have to stop at a stop sign

9:26

because there was literally

9:29

no car . Okay

9:31

. So I love seeing

9:33

all the people that are so happy to be here

9:35

and they appreciate all of the art

9:38

and the music and what a different

9:41

scene it is now than growing up

9:43

.

9:44

I still really think Someone should be grateful for it . And

9:47

the vast majority of our buyers are coming here from

9:49

other places and they are thrilled to

9:51

be here and it is such a

9:53

cool vibe . Yes

9:55

, like to , because you

9:58

deal with some buyers that don't want it Like

10:00

they didn't want it . This was not their idea

10:02

. That's just not the case with our community . People

10:04

coming here can't wait to experience

10:06

. You know exactly what we have

10:09

from the shopping to the restaurants , to

10:11

the culture , to the bike trails everything

10:13

. They're legitimately excited to be

10:15

a part and it feels ground floor right

10:17

. They're not as ground floor as you , megan .

10:19

We know you're the OG .

10:21

She's an AO . You're the original Bentonville the

10:23

parents . But yes , I

10:26

caused a little ruckus back in my high school

10:28

days .

10:28

Oh , tell us .

10:29

I'm just kidding .

10:31

No , I want to know now .

10:32

My mom's favorite story is probably

10:34

I just got my license and

10:37

I drove around the square backwards and my little

10:39

cabriolet girl . And

10:43

my mom got like 10 phone calls like backwards

10:45

.

10:46

Is it in reverse ?

10:48

You know , when you're 16 you're so silly

10:50

and no , I was never silly

10:52

enough to drive that there was no

10:54

traffic .

10:55

I'm pretty impressed I had a car .

10:57

I got in trouble for a moment Without a backup

10:59

camera , I'm sure no backup camera .

11:01

Not in those days . That's real

11:03

back and out .

11:04

I know , I'm just driving around the square backwards .

11:06

Now you're part of the pedestrians . You back

11:08

into every parking space now , don't you ?

11:10

Absolutely . She

11:14

is that girl in a big , huge truck back into a tiny square

11:16

.

11:18

Ladies , thank you so much for joining me today . I

11:20

really enjoyed our talk . Is there anything we missed

11:22

?

11:55

husband will be your next customer .

11:57

12:01

.

12:01

He doesn't even like to shop . Okay .

12:03

To be clear , they don't have boats in season yet

12:06

.

12:06

Wait till 2024 .
