Hello , hello everybody , and welcome to
0:13
Visit Bentonville's A New American Town podcast
0:15
. I'm your host , stevie , and today's
0:17
episode is sponsored by AusTrails . Did
0:20
you know that in Bentonville , arkansas , there's
0:22
an outdoor exercise staircase that's equivalent
0:24
to 11 flights of stairs one way
0:26
. More on that in a few minutes . Our
0:29
guests today are Taylor Scott and Nate
0:31
from Kohler Mountain Bike Preserve here in Bentonville
0:33
. Welcome .
0:34
Hey , thanks for having us Welcome .
0:36
Absolutely , can you all please
0:38
introduce yourself ? Let's get the show rolling .
0:41
Absolutely . My name is Taylor Reed and I
0:43
am the marketing manager at Peelcompton
0:45
Foundation in Kohler Mountain Bike Preserve .
0:48
Nate Renner . I work on the trail
0:50
crew at Kohler Mountain Bike Preserve .
0:52
And Scott Dirksen , senior program manager for
0:54
Kohler Mountain Bike , preserve .
0:56
Awesome , nice to see all of you here today
0:58
. Taylor , who
1:00
and what is Peelcompton Foundation ?
1:02
So Peelcompton Foundation is a local 501C3
1:05
here in Bentonville , arkansas . We
1:07
connect the community through nature , education , recreation
1:10
and preservation , and we
1:12
happen to host some pretty great
1:14
community events educational programming
1:16
covering things like mountain biking
1:18
, archery , ecology and leave-nope
1:21
trace principles , on top of , honestly
1:23
, tons of other things for families and individuals
1:26
who are new and old in
1:28
the community . So that's about
1:30
what we do .
1:31
And you kind of hinted to this when you said ecology
1:33
and archery . What are the public spaces
1:35
that Peelcompton Foundation facilitates
1:37
?
1:38
So we have under our belt Compton
1:40
Gardens and Arboretum , we have Osage
1:42
Park , and at Osage Park we have
1:44
the Quiver Archery Range , peel
1:47
Museum and Botanical Garden and , of course , kohler
1:49
Mountain Bike Preserve .
1:51
What we're here to talk about today . So
1:54
great segue . Taylor Scott , can you
1:56
give us an overview of Kohler Mountain Bike Preserve
1:58
? Even though it's called the Mountain
2:00
Bike Preserve , there's so much more you can do there than
2:03
just riding a bike , right .
2:04
Yeah , kohler Mountain Bike Preserve , even
2:06
though it says in the name it's a gym here in the
2:08
heart of Bentonville , arkansas . It's
2:10
a 300-acre property a little over a mile
2:13
long . It has 20-plus miles of trails
2:15
for hiking and for biking , a
2:17
greenway , which is a paved bike
2:19
path that goes to the middle for
2:21
all types of users to get out and utilize
2:24
Kohler . And it's a preserve
2:26
, so it's natural there's some architecture
2:29
and buildings , but you feel like you're
2:31
in the woods , you feel like you're outside
2:33
of the town , even though it's just like a mile
2:35
from downtown Bentonville , and once
2:37
you're there it's an amazing experience
2:39
to enjoy nature .
2:41
And for those who don't know , there's also a very unique
2:43
coffee shop in the middle of the preserve
2:45
.
2:45
Yeah , so the trails , obviously
2:47
you can hike and bike on , but there
2:49
is airship coffee shop
2:52
in the heart of Kohler , so
2:54
to get to it , the only way to get to it , is by
2:56
biking or walking about a
2:58
half mile from either parking lot to
3:00
get there .
3:01
Scott , it sounds like there are so many awesome amenities
3:03
in Kohler . What about the programming
3:05
you guys offer ?
3:06
Yeah , so besides just coming and utilizing the property on a day-to-day
3:08
basis , we offer classes , clinics
3:11
, specific things for people to do in the community
3:13
, for children and adults alike
3:15
. Mostly we focus on mountain
3:17
bike classes and some clinics , but
3:20
really we have a lot of nature programs
3:22
, especially for children . We have week-long
3:24
camps for children to get involved , to learn about
3:26
nature , disconnect , get outside
3:29
and learn about the natural environment
3:31
around them .
3:32
That has been your most popular program offering so
3:35
far .
3:36
Thanks for that question , stevie . My favorite part for
3:38
leading programs at Kohler
3:40
is definitely when I get people
3:43
who have come to Kohler and they maybe haven't
3:45
done that skill or activity outside that
3:47
often and they get engaged
3:50
and they do it and Just to see their face
3:52
light up , to see them engage
3:54
with nature in a different way that maybe they haven't before
3:56
, it's really rewarding to
3:58
see , especially when you have the kids for a week
4:00
at a time . By the end of the week they just they love being
4:02
outside . They're eating the berries on the
4:04
property Don't worry , just the edible ones and
4:07
it's . It's really great to see that
4:09
connection to nature after the end of a program
4:11
.
4:12
That's amazing . Nate , can you tell me about the
4:14
trail crew ?
4:15
Yeah , there's three of us myself
4:17
, maddie and Logan Pretty
4:21
much every day of the week where they're
4:23
scoping out what
4:26
needs to be worked on the most
4:28
and upgrades and trail
4:30
repairs , you name it and
4:33
we're always trying to enhance
4:36
the park and just maintain it and keep it up to
4:38
good shape .
4:40
What's your favorite part about being on the trail crew ?
4:42
Oh , I mean , it's
4:44
my passion personally . It's why
4:46
I moved to Bentonville even earlier this year . They
4:50
say you Do what you
4:52
love . You never work a day in your life right and
4:54
it checks a lot of boxes . I'm always in
4:56
, surrounded by nature . I'm getting
4:58
a lot of exercise for sure on the trail crew
5:00
and it's really fulfilling . I feel
5:03
like I'm giving back to the community that way . Pretty
5:05
much every day , at least one person will
5:07
stop , stop stop the trail
5:09
crew and tell us thank you so much for what you
5:12
guys do . You guys are awesome . It's . How could
5:14
you not love it ?
5:15
That's amazing and it's so true . I think people
5:18
can sometimes tend to forget about
5:20
what goes on behind the scenes , and trail
5:22
crews work very , very hard for Everyone
5:25
to be able to enjoy the trails . Taylor
5:29
will send it back to you here . What
5:31
do you hope for the future of Kohler
5:33
? What do you hope that looks like ?
5:35
for the future of Kohler . Um , you
5:37
know , as a non-mountain
5:40
biker , I think that that's
5:44
kind of the place for mountain biking
5:46
, but what a waste it would be
5:49
if people who didn't mountain bike didn't know
5:51
that Kohler exists . So
5:53
really it's brand awareness , you know , for Kohler
5:55
, knowing that it is more than that . It's a place
5:57
to escape your
5:59
everyday life and Be
6:01
kind of in the midst of nature
6:04
nature , I guess , as
6:06
it stands in the , in the Ozarks . So
6:09
that's kind of my wish for Kohler
6:12
in the future .
6:12
It really is a nice escape , isn't it ? Yeah , like
6:14
Scott mentioned earlier , it feels like you're
6:16
out in this amazing place , super
6:19
far away from town , but it's just really close
6:21
, about a mile away . Nate
6:23
, what do you hope the future of Kohler looks like ?
6:25
I Hope we can just keep making
6:27
it better , kind of appeal to
6:30
all levels of riders keep enhancing
6:32
that feeling of progression green trails
6:34
, blue trails , black trails , just
6:37
so anybody who comes to Kohler can
6:39
have a great time and Scott , I have
6:41
a kind of a two-part closing question for
6:43
you .
6:44
What is new at Kohler Mountain Bike Preserve
6:46
right now and Also , what do you
6:48
hope the future of Kohler looks like ?
6:50
Yeah , a new would be our Thanksgiving kids
6:52
camp next week , something we haven't done before . We're
6:55
also trying to break into different types of programs
6:58
and challenges to engage people Beyond
7:00
just coming to a program . So next year we're
7:02
gonna have some well , right now I'm calling them
7:04
Kohler days where people can come out and we
7:06
can Guide them around , show
7:08
them some things , do some interpretation , sue
7:11
some nature hikes while people enjoy airship and and
7:13
kind of highlight our partner partners , programmers
7:16
at Kohler and really get people
7:18
a deeper connection to to
7:20
Kohler . And what I
7:22
Envision for Kohler in the future is
7:25
a place where all types
7:27
of people feel Included
7:29
and not just included , but they feel welcome . So
7:32
that is gonna have to take some intentionality with
7:34
working with different types of communities , different
7:36
types of programming , so that people
7:38
can come and and Discover Kohler
7:40
, feel welcome there and then
7:42
continue to use it to to reach
7:45
our mission to connect people to nature and get outside
7:47
.
7:47
Amazing sounds like there are a lot of good things
7:50
in store for next year and for beyond .
7:51
We're excited for it , for sure , and so if you haven't
7:54
haven't experienced it , just come out and just
7:56
do a walkthrough , kohler , and if you want to engage on
7:58
a deeper level , get
8:00
in touch with us . We'd love to have people at a program
8:02
or or an activity , or just experience Kohler
8:04
.
8:05
And if for anything , it's the nachos .
8:07
At airship . They're so good gotta get
8:09
the nachos , and for the kids you can get them a
8:11
steamer , a little hot cocoa . It's great
8:13
.
8:14
Now , taylor , where can people find you online if they want
8:16
