Mary Wiemann of Elder Services, Mike Hensch of the Johnson County Medical Examiner Department, and Sara Sanders of the University of Iowa School of Social Work present information on the topic of elder abuse. The Elder Abuse Initiative is a program of the Iowa Department on Aging which provides for the enhanced prevention, detection, and reporting of elder abuse, local advocacy, and service coordination for the protection of older individuals. Elder abuse appears in many different forms, including physical abuse, emotional abuse, financial exploitation, neglect, or abandonment. Regionally, the Initiative is administered by The Heritage Agency and locally through Elder Services, Inc. The Johnson County Older Adult Death Review Team is a multidisciplinary process to coordinate case data and resources to improve understanding of many issues relevant to sudden, unexplained deaths of older adults in our community. The Death Review Team is unique throughout the United States and is a proactive approach initiated by the Johnson County Medical Examiner Department in response to an increase in older adult deaths that appear to have been caused by some form of neglect, either purposeful or inadvertent, as well as suicides among older adults.
