Today's recovery tip for the day is about help in the morning and thanks at night. In phase one of your recovery you will just be getting out of detox and establishing a routine and building faith in the God of your own understanding. So you put some keys or cigarettes (something that you use often) and you put it under the bed. In the morning when you get up, you are on your knees to get that item and then you remember: Oh! I'm on my knees so that I can ask for help and that's all you need to do. Just say "help". And then at night when you come back home, when you're ready to go to bed, you be sure to put those cigarettes or keys or personal item back under the bed. And you'll find yourself again on your knees and you'll go: Oh! I'm here on my knees for a reason in my recovery. And you simply need to say "thank you". On phase 2, after you have gotten out of rehab and you're out in the real world, it can be very scary. So you don't know what you might run into and what slippery items, people, places and things are out there. So, at this point in the morning you are on your knees getting the item from under the bed and you say "keep me away from (and you name your addiction) and please keep me away old people, old behaviors - and, just for today, slippery things". At night ,when you're back on your knees replacing the item under the bed, you just say "thank you". The phase 3 is after you have done step three and now you have a higher power to the best of your understanding at this part of your recovery. So in the morning when you are retrieving the item from under the bed, it goes like this: "please keep me clean and sober just for today, and please help me be of maximum service to you and to others". At night it is always about thank you for keeping me clean from (and you name your addiction)". Because we switch our addiction at times. too. Different phases and different parts of our life, we all have different addictions. So, name the addiction, you specify the addiction that you are in recovery from at this point.
