Hello, my aid worker, friend. I hope you're having a wonderful week.
0:04
I remember from when I worked with the INGO sector, that this is around the
0:10
time we would do our annual planning.
0:13
Maybe that's not true for you and your organization, but I just
0:16
thought I'd make an episode, which is relatable, regardless of whether
0:21
you're doing annual planning or not.
0:24
And that is how to know if you will achieve your goal.
0:30
And when I'm talking about goal, I'm talking about your personal or
0:34
professional goal, not just your team or organizational goal, which is
0:40
more of the focus of the annual plan.
0:44
And of course we want to take the annual plan.
0:46
And I remember doing all those like flip charts and post-it notes all
0:50
over the room, and then it somehow gets funneled into an Excel sheet.
0:54
And then you have an idea of what you're going to be working on over the
0:58
next year and how it lines up with the regional priorities and HQ priorities
1:04
and so on, but you also have your individual priorities and maybe some
1:08
of these you've already done for the calendar year, or maybe you have done
1:13
when you did your performance plan.
1:16
But, it's still important to take a look no matter where we are in the
1:21
year, about how can you make sure that you are most on track and set
1:30
up to succeed to achieve your goals.
1:35
And maybe your goal is something like you want to be promoted to another position
1:40
or take on more of a supervisory role, or you want to learn something new, have
1:45
a certification in HR or whatever it is.
1:49
I want to tell you how you will know if you will achieve your goal over the next
1:55
year or at least make progress toward it.
1:59
So it comes down to two simple things.
2:02
The first is being clear about what you want to create.
2:07
And I know that sounds obvious, but I say it because a lot of us are not so clear.
2:13
We might have an idea in the back of our mind, what we want to create, or the
2:18
impact that we want to make as a leader.
2:21
And usually what I see with leaders is they take what is in their
2:27
development plan and more of the project goals and they adopt those
2:32
to become their professional goals.
2:36
But I want you to take a step further and think about what is the impact that
2:42
you want to make as a leader based on your unique, potential and skillset?
2:49
What do you want to do? Not to add to your workload, but to motivate you to step into your role
2:55
and make your own unique mark on your work and what you're doing.
3:03
A lot of us don't think about that. We don't take the time to think about that.
3:06
The impact that we want to create. And I'll talk more about that on a future episode.
3:12
But that's the first step is just even really understanding
3:16
what is it you want to create? Or what is the goal that I want to achieve over the next year, beyond
3:24
just the project or the adoptation of the new system, whatever.
3:28
That's great, but impact goes beyond that.
3:32
Right? Those will make an impact in a way, but how do we want to make
3:36
our own individual unique impact?
3:41
So the second thing that we need to look at to see if we will achieve
3:45
our goal is how you use your time.
3:50
And I've talked about this a little bit in past episodes, but I think it's worth
3:54
spending a little more time explaining it, because it is such a key thing.
4:00
So are you spending time on the things which will lead to achieving
4:06
your goal on a daily or weekly basis?
4:10
And in the Coach Approach Leadership Style course, we determine this
4:14
through what I call a time audit.
4:17
So we look at how you're using your time and if it aligns with
4:23
the impact that you want to create.
4:27
And you have to be honest with yourself because sometimes we can trick ourselves
4:31
into thinking that the activities or how we're spending our time is productive
4:37
or leading to where we want to go, but when we really take a step back and look
4:41
at it, we realize that they are not..
4:46
So it's really important to first of all, understand where you want to go
4:51
or the goal you want to achieve, but then secondly, understand how you
4:55
are currently working or not working that will allow you to get there.
5:02
So, for example, if you want to create a more proactive team, but
5:06
you spend all your time on business development or answering emails for
5:12
other people, then guess what you're going to create over the next year?
5:17
Yeah, more business development and more email.
5:21
So if we take the way we spend our time and we amplify it, that will tell you
5:27
whether you will achieve your goal or not.
5:31
Where you will be in a year.
5:34
And it's a really helpful exercise to do on a regular basis because sometimes
5:40
we get so busy and wrapped up on the day-to-day work that we don't reflect on
5:46
will these things that I'm doing today help me achieve my goal a year from now?
5:53
So we should try and spend more of our time on the activities or the tasks
6:00
that will lead to achieving our goal and less on what I call empty calorie tasks.
6:07
And I talk about empty calorie tasks on a previous episode,
6:11
so I'll put that in the show notes. But basically those types of activities, which take up our time, but don't
6:19
really lead to anything productive.
6:22
For example, a lot of times it's email or approving things.
6:29
So it's simple science, what we focus on and how we spend our
6:33
time is what we are creating.
6:36
But a lot of us become so lost in the everyday busy-ness that we are reacting
6:44
to what others want from us rather than what we want to create for ourselves.
6:50
And we also may not think that we have control over our time.
6:55
So that's another thought leading to what I have introduced in the
7:00
past two or three episodes that is High Performance Syndrome.
7:05
And it's another way of thinking about the way we use our time
7:09
and the way we lead, which creates busy-ness without impact.
7:13
So when we believe we have no control of our time, this also will lead to us
7:18
just being victim of whatever comes our way and so create whatever everyone else
7:25
wants and not necessarily what we want.
7:28
So I challenge you this week to reflect over how you're using your time.
7:34
And ask if you keep spending your time, this way will it get you to
7:40
where you want to go, or at least allow you to achieve your goals?
7:46
If the answer is, yes, great, keep going.
7:51
But if the answer is no, you may need to make some changes.
7:56
And the thing is we all are spending our time on things every day, Every day,
8:01
you make decisions on how you use your time, whether you're aware of it or not.
8:07
And there's always something that will not get done.
8:11
So do you want the thing that is not getting done to be the same thing that
8:15
will allow you to reach your goals? Or do you want the thing that is not getting done to be the
8:23
thing that will keep you in busy-ness?
8:27
It's up to you. All right.
8:30
So until next week, keep broadening your impact.
8:35
Bye for now.
