Artist and Drummer of the Band METZ

Holds his BFA with Honors from Concordia University in Montreal.  

Recorded February 2, 2019 in Montreal Quebec. 

What we talk about: 

Montreal: What a weird city. 

Canadians are different people. They really are. 

Hayden was born in Winnipeg and was an army brat. 

The Phoenix Coyotes in Kingston?

Hayden started out as a science nerd, dabbled in Biochemistry…but science is an all or none commitment. 

Being disillusioned with “the academic treadmill.”  

but “pursuing anything art related is probably not going to be lucrative.” 

Hayden transferred to Montreal Concordia. The Canadian “art nerd school,” but close to Ottawa. 

METZ the band: a band that talks to each other while playing. 

Beatles or Stones: are you a studio band person or are you a live band person? 

The Rolling Stones album: “Blue Lonesome” 

Hayden: team Beatles, but listens to podcasts more…but listens to music while playing. 

Hayden the artist: Cartoon charactures, flash sheet aesthetic, no negative space, reminded me of Keith Herring. 

Was told in college to choose between painting and drawing…Hayden did the opposite and did both.

At Eternity’s Gate…you can’t fake real. 

Picasso: It takes a lifetime to cultivate the necessary skills to be able to paint a masterpiece in 30 seconds.  

Real masters are student’s first, you must constantly be studying. 

Rembrandt 

Hayden has easter eggs hidden in all of his works: three Houses and a Hand. 

Egon Shiel and Alberto Giacometti : artists who deliberately distort body proportions. Huge influence on Hayden.

William Kentridge, Andy Goldsworthy, and Tibetan sand art. 

The dangers of narcissism: sometimes the end product is not the point. The journey and the creative process is the important part.

No one owes you a fucking thing:  That fact is either a motivation or a daunting curse.
