When we find ourselves feeling discriminated against by others, our first instinct is often to retaliate. We say that we cannot understand how such people can do such heinous and shameless acts and so we see the good in us and the bad in them, thereby responding to discrimination with discrimination. Compassion means we can see not only our own wounds but also the wounds of our so called enemies. We see that the dog bites us because it was not raised with love and often neglected. We see that if there is an enemy, that the enemy is not a person or group and that it exists in our own hearts and we are not separate from it. When we are compassionate, we can be brave enough to let go of our anger and invite our so called enemy in and we can share our suffering with each other. It is from this place where we can stop the cycle of suffering, opening the doors of understanding.
