A production of ASA Podcasting. Modtalk is a podcast about modding video games. We talk mostly games by Bethesda, like Skyrim and Fallout, but also games like Factorio and City Skylines.
Modding games is fun, but can also be daunting and disastrous. On Modtalk, we'll try to help. Recently, games like Skyrim and Fallout 4 have received mod support on consoles. That's awesome; however, this podcast will concentrate mostly on PC modding. We have consoles, and we'll talk a bit about them, but serious modding really requires a PC based game.
Caveat Emptor :-). You get what you pay for. Or in this case, "Nothing ain't worth nothing, but it's free." My point is, if you have the ability on PC to curate your mods, then you should learn to. Because, when you want to add more, and experiment with combinations of mods, you'll inevitably run into problems that you cannot solve without a good mod manager, and some experience. For some people, that's more than they want to deal with. And that's fine too. Consoles are where it's at. But modding is a delicate balance between stability and disaster. So, you're not a mod weakling if you stick with consoles or Bethesda and Steam. You just want to add some spice and play. I understand that. Just do yourself a favor, and spend a little time each gaming session looking into more advanced modding practices, and the Nexus. You'll find that the subscription model that Steam and Bethesda use is a poor one for modding. It takes agency away from the mod user, in the name of ease of use, and teaches you that modding is simple. These are bad lessons in the end, but hard ones to ignore. Nobody wants to spend more time learning how to mod, than they spend enjoying the game. (Unless you're an idiot like me.)I hope I don't sound too pedantic here. I'm just trying to make a point for anyone reading this. Modding is a little like working on your car. It's not too hard to put a new air filter in. Or change a wiper blade. But changing your oil, or doing a brake job require some edumication. And things just get more complicated from there. Bethesda and Steam are the wiper blades and air filters. The Nexus is the valve job
