In 2008, Paul Moon published ‘This Horrid Practice: The Myth and Reality of Traditional Maori Cannibalism’. In the months that followed, he was subject to a barrage of criticism and attacks from various quarters, and a year later, there are still people trying to thwart his findings. In this talk, Professor Moon will discuss some of the disturbing circumstances he faced, the main themes of his book, the approach he took to the subject, and the challenge of writing history in a climate that attempts to censure alternative interpretations of certain topics.
